In an interview which is posted here on youtube, Ohlmeyer said the reason he removed Norm from Weekend Update was that the ratings for Weekend Update were lower than the ratings for the rest of the show, and that this was unprecedented in the history of SNL. Before Norm became anchor, the Weekend Update segment had always been more highly rated than the rest of the show. Of course, I don't know whether Ohlmeyer was telling the truth.
If that isn't BS, I don't know what is. Everyone knows he was the best ever. The reasons are well known: The network president was friends with a favorite butt of Norm's jokes. But also IMO, Norm was too funny in a way which was becoming uncomfortable to a program that was developing a kind of political cowardice.
The best part of Norm's Update's were the O.J. jokes. Ohlmeyer claims he went out of his way to let the talent at NBC know that joking about O.J. was ok. As I mentioned, his interview is here on youtube, so judge for yourself. It's four hours long, split into 8 parts, but it is chronological, so the part on Norm will be in the later segments. If you're interested, I'd recommend to start looking in part 6 or 7.
Ok, thanks. The "friends w. OJ" is just rumor, so my my other comments are a stab at looking at other motivations. If you look at C.Q., T.F. who followed its especially hard for to believe the ratings claim. Again, I think at that time, SLN was more daring with their politics (generally) compared to the period that followed. Maybe places like comedy central were draining talent, I don't know, but its been very dissapointing.
@Rayla840 Yes I would have said Chevy Chase, if it were me who wrote that comment... My brother was on my account by accident maybe... and you don't care, because I noticed this about a month too late... And the issue is dead... DEADDD!!!
This is a really good video.

@Minniethemoochier I think you mean Chevy Chase. Cuz I know he said that after him, Norm is only the only one who did Update right

@roundglass1 Too many OJ jokes did him in, and OJ was a tight friend of Don Omeyer. That's my guess anyway

That sounds like something that is said to cover something up.. Sad how Norm can relate so well to anyone except for suits
