Good times. Though I often leaned towards using the sword and attacking through a thin wall or a corner they might get caught up on. Would be nice to have this, as a 'collection' on the PSP. The buttons could emulate the F keys.
Whenever I'd use the Magic Sword, it'd always get replaced several minutes later by the Short Sword. I noticed that didn't happen in this video. I wonder if my cartridge had a bug.
Protect spell temporarily allowed you to pick up an item that is "trapped". Which is kinda cool---cuz nowadays you save your game---which will help in determining whether or not you want to pick up that item or not....especially if it's the good ol' poison needle---when you have no healing items. Just something to think about.
I remember the whistling sound of searching for secret doors. And don't you dare pick up anything before you scan it for traps first. Sometimes you could kill other creatures through walls. Good cheat.
Played this ages ago and hated the manbas and blink bats on the later levels that always killed me. Too bad Apshai is too small-fry for a remake.(I did see one for NWN1 though)
This is the first game I can remember playing. I was about 5 years at the time and had just learned how to read. This game was one the many great c64 games which made me want to learn english. I soon realized the meaning of words such as keys, bow and arrows. I never realized what the helm was for, because that wasn't so obvious.
Ditto, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't as this was done by Eypx and their entire catalog are now owned by the same company that owns commodore computers who liscened there stuff to Nintendo for VC release hopefuly they also have the rights to Borderbound and others I would love to see Castles of Dr. Creep on vc as well
The one thing that might hold it back is that it seems like the C64 releases seem to tend more towards later releases with NES-level graphics, but if they can release Jumpman in Europe, I don't see why they couldn't release Gateway to Apshai in the U.S. Make it happen and give us some proto-Zelda goodness, Epyx!
Yes, there was. There were 16 different dungeons per dungeon level, IIRC. Then there were 16 dungeon levels. if you beat lvl 16, you won. (of course, there were 15 other lvl 16 dungeons to beat) -kinda like getting the Sword Of Fargoal back to the surface (never accomplished that one, myself)
Man, I used to play this for hours on my C64 back in the day. It was so annoying to fight monsters; you had to do a dance around them. However, it was helpful when they randonly got STUCK on things. Ha ha ha! Thanx for the flashback...
26 hits to kill a dragon. Ouch. Good thing you didn't run into any mamba snakes. They're just as tough and twice as fast.

Am i the only one who thinks that this game is the c64's take on Rogue?

I gotta admit---those blinking bats are the worst to get rid of when you have only certain spells.

This is one of the most underrated games of all time.

I got this on Colecovision. Good conversion but there's nothing like C64 sound :(
Actually I think I have this on my Plug n Play C64 joystick game.

This game used to make me jump as a kid because you never knew when an enemy was in the next area. I remember hating the goblin.

That's just it...I remember completing level 16 many times, but all it did was restart at level 16 again.

Hehe...this game stole alot of my young time as a kid. Funny though how nostalgia can paint a picture perfect.
