I wish there was more research into SP. I used to suffer from it a lot growing up and into my mid teens. I don't think the symptoms he's described in this interview are a product of our minds. It's too coincidental that people all over the world, see, hear, and feel the same things.

I have been able to make contact with someone who was awake next to me once. My eyes were open too just a crack. I could use my voice but I couldn't open my mouth so I could only just make sounds. The rest of me was totally numb like my body was made of lead. My girlfriend (at the time) was saying hello, are you awake? All I could do was look and grunt quietly. It was a little frustrating but I was glad I finally was able to make conscious contact with another person who was in a normal-

You are a true scientist who is searching for real answers on the unseen and deliberately forgotten. Two of the three important features of the experience became clear to him- that the SP itself represents an expanded state of consciousness/awareness, and that the 'old hag' or 'dweller on the threshold' phenomena is spiritual (meaning non-physical). The only detail not quite arrived at, is that the phenomena is in place to help. It represents one OWN state of fear, of going out beyond the physical reality boundary. Not an outside assault.

@anastaisa100 - That's rather interesting comment, incubus and succubus which has som connection to sleep paralysis was thought to be male and female counterparts which raped individuals during these episodes

The most recent, though, I know I was awake because my husband got up for work, left the bedroom, I heard a crackling noise, saw the shadow figure, etc., but my husband heard the noise too!! He told me he thought our cat had run under our bed where I have some magazines stored, but he saw her in the hallway, He heard it too!!!
@Dahstin pretty sure i use my own mind and make the experience an amazing gift from the unknown...you'd be surprised what would happen to your world when you use your brain and leave childish ideas where they belong
@lungfung37 Thats fine and dandy but when you are in the grips of pure terror, and you can see its face, and feel it when you are awake, it's hard to experience the wonderful things that your mind may show you from beyond. So if by calling out the name if the lord is childish so be it, there is something to it... it works. Peace.

I had one of my worst SP attacks when I was lying on my front. During the experience my face was pressed into the pillow making it hard to breathe. I keep my forearm between my forehead and the pillow to give a bit more breathing space if an attack ever does happen again. So beware of that.
I gave up drinking alcohol and the SP has reduced drastically, gradually for first few months. From a spiritual angle, it has been said that bad spirits hang around people who drink or do drugs.
its Gods way of showing these things exist and what could be in your after life and we need to get off our bum and pray and lead a good clean life or else. but people will believe what they want because they find it easy.
@pards007 No it's simply a product of our imaginations. Think about it, why are these "frighting presences" always described as a horror movie cliche? Because thats about as much as our imaginations can think up. If demons existed, what are the chances they would look like something from a film, a shady figure crawling on your bed etc, it's all just imagination. If demons existed, their appearance (if they had one) and actions would be way more than the human mind can just think up or comprehend

Me too. sleep paralysis is a very real thing, but the demons etc that people see are not real in the sense that they don't actually physically exist. The demons are no more or less real than the images we see in our heads every night when we dream, the difference with SP is that your mind is stuck in limbo between being asleep and awake, which is why it feels so real when people see these images outside their heads
@ClearlyBlazed i do appreciate your imput but I for one KNOW demons exist, I do believe that there is a sleep paralysis clearly only medical like but also one that can occur supernatural- my experience was definantly the latter i KNOW this because of certain things that happened during this occurance. id like to talk to him about my sleep paralysis ive been skipping sleep at night due to the sound whenever i close my eyes of a box sliding on the ground, i told my dad about it, he thought i was possibaly crazy, finaly decided to do research now he believes its something more.
Thank you the videos my sleep paralysis is an extreme condition and ill try not sleeping on my back, i personaly see a three dimensional shadowy figure of a man with no face who keeps hurting me.

I would be interested in seeing if someone could be studied while having sleep Paralysis, but with a few others in the room that would be on the astral plane or out of their body's, that way we would know then if this entity is visible to others at the same time.
It seems like the interviewer is trying to constrain the experience to a belief system by repeatedly calling it a supernatural attack. It may be an attack; I used to believe that when I was younger. Though, what if it's a hallucination associated with this state of mind? I have also had OBEs, and experience that there is more to me than my body, but I think that supernatural is a kind of lazy term for things we don't understand. If these presences don't kill you, maybe they're impotent:)

No, im not narcoleptic, but i thought this series of videos/this documentary would have described certain types of sleep paralysis more, in the scientific form, rather than concentrating on the spiritual sense. Im left even more confused than I was before watching these videos.
@donnamariegallagher have you tried praying even in your head and or calling out the name Jesus if possible (when it happens to me i cannot speak at all) but i've have heard even doin it in your head works and I've heard even for non-believers its has. If its a constant basis trying callin our for Jesus's help before laying down, you have nothing to lose even if your a non-believer and maybe if you are this might open you eyes to His Truth. I hope this helps because its scares me big time
I would just like to say that Professor Hufford seems to be a remarkably thoughtful man, carefully fusing together empirical scientific observations with some interesting social and cultural issues, and willing to entertain the supernatural, paranormal, and metaphysical, given that the very etymological basis of supernatural in this context, is to describe the mystery of a seemingly natural and tangible inner process.
