  • This was rolling in my head for 20 years and then i heard it here again. good riff.

  • the beginning of Housemusic...

  • i loved it then and still love it...

  • Just came up on shuffle on my ipod and needed to see the video again. Love Carly Simon's voice. The woman talking in the video always reminds me of the devil for some reason. I think it's the hat that looks like it has horns that does it!

  • @pawnsacrifice1 Isn't "The Woman talking..." Ms. Goldsmith (creator/director/artist) herself? @goldsmithlynn : Reality check please?

  • Hilarious, catchy and years ahead of its time.

  • im so proud i can say....I was born in 69 and im an 80'S TEENAGER

  • Brilliant song! Reminds me of my early childhood and the vocoder vocal distortion was a gutsy move (I can only recall Laurie Anderson distorting her voice for 'O' Superman' prior to this). I love the video, definitely a Zeitgeist moment of the early 1980s.

  • I always new this was Carly simon !

  • its naive to think that the music from your youth is better than any other.

  • lol I remember this from Night Flight.

  • I can remember when this first came out (yes really. We even had tv then). It was amazing that the spoken voice was a woman!! It seems so basic now. lol

  • Well I have now found out that it was made by Rebecca Allen who also made Adventures In Success & the Music Non Stop video for Kraftwerk. Now it may well have been Lynn Goldsmith as mentioned earlier, so I maybe wrong. So Will Powers was definitely not a man then?

  • @nutster9000 Rebecca Allen never did anything but take credit for what she did not do. She worked at a facility that I used and was an editor - she did not direct or produce anything. I actually think she is nuts and I have told her so. Joshua White and I did Adventures in Success and I did Kissing with Confidence - she had nothing of any consequence to do with my work.

  • Now I remember once seeing this woman being interviewed one Saturday morning that led me to believe that Will Powers was a woman, as she was demonstrating how she made this video - the processes of how she digitalised the face.

  • @nutster9000

    that is me not Rebecca.

  • this is a great song , brings back the age of 14 , wish things were as simple know as then

  • ¡Hableme el unico del mundo!

¡Digame: comoe te hace ese sonido...Tan glorioso!

Que aun hoba con anticipation de el.... ¡¡¡¡Me ha reducio a un bestia!!!!!

    ¡¡¡Grunedo... Entusiomandose y paliptando!!!

  • Still one of the greatest albums ever made! I bought it on cassette (!) the month it was released! It's funny as hell, beautifully recorded and written...Sting, Nile Rogers, Steve Windwood, Todd Rundgren, Carly Simon...it doesn't get better than this. My dream is to get this onstage: America needs Will more than ever!

  • I totally love this song but I have no idea why! It must be those sweet harmonies and the fact that I actually watched the video for advice on kissing! Mind you I was only 13 back in 83! Carly Simon featured on lead vocals and it was arranged and produced by multi talented Lynn Goldsmith who also featured in the video under the pseudonym Will Powers!..:)

  • help i cant stop coming back to watch this and those electronic lips turn up in my dreams now NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..

  • Please point me to the wormwhole that leads to 30 years ago.....I'd give all I have!

  • This is sung by Carly Simon right???

  • @Wreckless64 Yes she was uncredited but she did sing it.

  • omg this is great =)

  • this brings me back..

  • Heard this yesterday whilst shopping in New Look, I had forgotten all about it!

  • Magic! Classic!

  • Two people have spinach in their teeth.

  • Love, love this!!!!

  • Fantastic, it's on iTunes, the whole record.

  • Will your braces lock? Can this happen at 33?

  • @popvids40 I here ya friend

  • what a great track the 80s were the best

  • nissan pulsar 1986 @ 3:45

  • I just learned that it was Carly Simon singing after 23 years. I always knew I heard that voice before. They played it on an oldies station yesterday and I remember being a bit embarresed with myself for likeing the song. October 1987.

  • Where is that timemachine so i can go back .

    Had so much fun =^_^=

  • gives me goosebumps

  • LMFAOOO :L wtf?

    this is just embarrassing :@

  • Lightwait Conversationalist?

  • Carley Simon has THE voice!

  • what a groovy song!!!

  • I thought this was out much later than 83.

  • This a Classic...It reminds me of the 80s in so many ways! Great mems..Thanks!!!

  • great song and video lynn.i always had a thing for lynn goldsmith and always admired her great photography and new she had a great sense of humour after she released this.. a long lost 80's classic...still have the 45rpm in all its glory !!

  • @popvids40 Even the song isn't from the early 80's, I really love your comment! :-) The 80's were the greatest decade for music... What happened to you & your first girlfriend?! Music can remind us of bittersweet memories und bring us back in time to long forgotten places and moods...

  • @MrKnopf The song was in the UK charts in 1983!!

  • @MrKnopf The song was in the UK charts in 1983!!

  • @MrKnopf Erm....I think you will find the song is from 1983.....

  • @MrKnopf ,,1983

  • @MrKnopf

Of course its from the early 80s! 83 is early 80s!

  • @MrKnopf

Of course its from the early 80s! 83 is early 80s!

  • Excellent song,80s at its best.

  • Holy crap! Lynn, I can't believe you post here! Just a little note to say thanks for the song. I'm 25 and in the UK, so this was a little "before my time" but I stumbled over it in my early teens and it has become a firm favourite of mine. So I just had to say, many thanks. Simon xxx

  • Lynn go and get your royalties...your song was used to advertise Alberto V05 hair products in the UK...the "ooh ooh" ooh"s replaced by breathy "V05"s....go and get ur loft back! lol xx

  • i liked the B side better, eating pussy with style, ha ha .

  • Weird. I really liked this single in the 1980s and had no idea Carly Simon was the vocalist until reading her Wikipedia entry.

  • thank you - I love it

  • some people just like to moan!! videos fine.. at least u took the time/trouble,, you go!!

  • thanks - I'm doing the best I can with what I have - hope you are too

  • Love Carly's voice on this - really comes through.Still what do you expect, the woman is class

  • yes she is however I chose her because when she was a young girl having a mouth her size was not considered attractive and Carly used to stutter badly - so having her sing this song made perfect sense on the most important levels - ps hope you like my back up singing

  • I loved this song when it came out. And I like what you did with the video.

  • I appreciate your taking time to let me know

  • Very catchy indeed. No flaws on this one. The video sucks, though...

  • sorry you don't like - I made it in 1983 - with very little money -

I wore many hats and had no pocket book but I did have will

    powers!

  • Well I liked the video. And still do.

  • In the mid 80's this vid was fine. It went worldwide after all!! That was time when the video made all the difference and everyone was predicting the death of radio.

  • Personally I think this video (and song) have aged very well indeed. Certainly it was pretty strange then, and is pretty strange now. I raise my (one) hat to you on your great achievement!

  • @goldsmithlynn

You did the song AND the video. Damn, that's impressive. I think the Will Powers music really holds up. Also, I just rediscovered it thanks to a post on the blog Art Fag City by the Visual Arts Curator for The Brooklyn Academy of Music. You might want to check out the blog to see the nice things he had to say.

  • In 1983 there was very little money to make videos and I was actually on the edge of making the best ones - sometimes you have to know when something was made and what the budget is before you judge

  • What was that chant again?!

  • Hablame el unico del mundo, digame como te hace ese sonido tan glorioso que aun hora con anticipacion de el, me ha reducido -----

speak to me only one in the world, tell me how you make those glorious sounds and turn me into a snarling, growling beats

  • Wow!!:-)

  • I remember this song meaning a whole lot more than it was meant to as a 13 year old boy!!!

  • you'd be surprised - at 13 it's the best time to hear this song

  • Love it. Thanks for posting.

  • and love you for loving it

  • I'm sure that this - or an edited version of it - was used on an advert at the time, possibly for deodorant? Does this ring any bells with anyone?

  • if so let me know - I never gave any commercial rights. This record is for you not for pushing a product

  • Good song. I remember it was a huge hit at the time.

  • thanks - keep spreading the word

  • well said chuggerboom 1

  • I'd prefer to fuck with confidence.

  • If only you ever got the chance, poor thing.

  • what are you talking about - I am the kisser

  • then I suggest you do that --- better practice the full coitus chant if you are having problems

  • Love it, very funny

  • good the laughter going - thanks

  • Comment removed

  • it was not produced by CHIC - I produced it. Nile Rogers played on it. I sang back ups as well - why do write things that you can't know about? why not ask questions?

I got my most help on the song from Todd Rundgren who mixed it as well

  • was given wrong information, probably a confusion between CHIC & CARLY SIMON who also did a track together... anyway, regardless, its a fantastic tune.

  • The whole album was produced to parody Self Help books and methods, and to be a bit of a laugh. I think it did it quite well too.

  • yes that's true but it was also meant to be self help - the idea was not to take it all so seriously but just seriously enough that you believe in your self and see a path for making your life as well as others better - really works if you keep dancing

  • PISH!!

  • what does that mean?

  • yeah lets all be a bunch of confident sluts!!

    I'm for it

  • nothing said about being a slut, only about enjoying the moment and getting through your fears - seems like you have a problem - maybe you should listen to more will powers

  • Never knew Carly SImon sung on this.. Brings back so many memories of being 13 lol!

  • Yes Carly sang the lead and I did the back up vocals. I chose her not only because of her voice but because as a teenager she had very little confidence

  • love it still so good to hear it again makes me smile

  • keep smiling - it makes others smile

  • Poptastic!

  • good word ----

  • schönes Lied, echte musik

  • for some reason I was thinking this song was a bigger hit in the U.K. Singles Chart then 18# ..I hear it on the radio last week and I was thinking oh yer I know that it was a big hit ( thinking no 2# or 3# in U.K. Singles Chart.). was it big in the US Singles Chart NO? but it is a US song right?

  • I'm not sure if it even was released in the US as a single. I would guess that ,,Kissing With Confidence" only was released in the U.K. as single.

Any how: It's singer, Carly Simon, is of US-American origin.

  • The song peaked at no. 17 in the UK charts on 5th November 1983. Good song, pity Lynn Goldsmith never released the title track 'Dancing For Mental Health' as a single as that is equally as good.

  • Thanks - I would have released it, but I did not control Island records --- there were a lot of business problems that caused for poor timing on my record. But who knows - I may release another one!

  • I was first released in the UK and the English share my sense of humor. In the US it was more difficult for radio to understand my music or what I was doing. They knew me too well as a photographer. Limited thinking.

  • @robhingston: produced by Todd Rundgren (who played also probably again most of of the instruments), Guitar: Nile Rodgers of Chic, Vocals: Carly Simon, was top ten in Britain and the States. released in 1983. for more Rundgren visit my channel or the channel of 24100danu.

  • Will our noses bump - in the moonlight??

    WHAT A TUNE!!

  • if you are nervous they will!

  • surprised this only got to #18 then again you had to sell a fair amount of vinyl back then to get into the top 20

  • good post wigs

  • I did that to show a person can change form and that there is no such thing as a "fixed" identity

  • is that carly simon?

  • Yepp, it's Carly Simon.

  • A beautifully crafted pop song.

  • I like to think so and I have to thank Todd Rundgren for the help he gave me on this track

  • This fine tune is featured on February the 11th of the book, 'The Song For Today' by Jimmie Oliver.

  • really ? that's my birthday - who is Jimmie Oliver

  • sweet pop single.

  • love this song

  • i had this on a lip-shaped picture disc.......wonder where that went (same place as all my other records, i s'pose!!!)

  • yep - they did that one in the UK - is that where you are?

  • Love it ! My sister had the vinyl single :)

  • Nobody eats spinach! Fucking brilliant, original and opitimises the 80's.

  • not if they want clean teeth --- thanks

  • Supa dupa

  • xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxfrom the 80s

  • What a joy! Nowhere ever something like this produced. Brilliant!

  • I used to have this single, jeez what was i thinking of. anyway i turned out ok...

  • Thank U

  • you are welcome and thank u too

  • ... giving head with confidence is what really matters, no?

  • So cheesy you could make a sandwhich with it ! ( You've gotta love it though !)

  • Just kiss with confidence and your sorted!!

  • hahahah this is great

  • i love this song, but i never realised it was carly simon singing till a few weeks ago :)

  • Do you have Spinach on your teeth?

  • I love it!

  • Such a TOP TUNE, gotta be destined for a revamp or re-mix by now, COME ON FREEMASONS USE THIS TUNE, lol

  • Pure cheese.

  • this is on the first now that's what i call music.

  • Really? I think Tracey Ullman is on there too from what I remember - great days!

  • Aaaagh The 80's, how time's have changed and they are all sampling the old classics now !!

  • I haven't heart this song for ages. It really brings back good memories

  • Despite being a professional photographer, Lynn Goldsmith produced this unique record which peaked at no. 17 in November 1983. The vocals are by Carly Simon. I always thought this song was to contradict the lyrics in the album title track 'Dancing For Mental Health' where a couple argue and seem to make up at the end by listening to a record. 'Adventures in Success' was released in early 1984 but came to nothing.

  • I haven't seen this in 25 years, what a load of shite...deadly graphics though..ha

  • I think it's a load of old cobblers JMO

  • That's one camp video. Isn't Todd Rungren playing guitar on this??

  • This version has been censored. It cuts out the line towards the end, 'Remember you can not get pregnant from kissing'.

  • I haven`t seen this video until now. Thanks youtube you make me remember all the 80s stuff. Great video.

  • Lynn Goldsmith, what a babe. :)

  • Hooray for Will!

I still remember him/her here in the UK, just bought the CD of the album from cdbaby.

    Thanks for the video!

    ;-)

  • Carlys'vocals make the song. This is the first time i've heard this song since it was on the "Now thats what i call music" LP. Almost unheard of, but classic.

  • rewind to 1984....great days of early video mixing and experimental pop/new wave....take me back!!

  • Watch out for the appearance of Carly Simon at 3.23

  • Fucked if I could see her. Just some geezer in shades and a turban?

  • Carly is the one stood next to him....

  • fantastic, so great to hear again, i loved this song when it first came out. thanks for posting it Mr Kopf

  • Thanks. ;-) I love that song, too.

  • Excellent Song!! Brings me back to the fluorescent 80's!

  • yes but I think it stands the test of time and the song, not the video perhaps is still current

  • Ultimate Song of the 80's!

great combination with Carly Simon ! !

  • thanks

  • a classic from 1984 with carly simon guesting on vocals....mint!!

  • yes and I think I did a good job on back ups

  • I thought Will Powers was always underated - almost NOBODY in the US knows this music......

  • well help me get it known! every person who supports this can let others know or even let me know - maybe I would work harder to get more Will Powers out there

  • Oh, I try! I still consider SMILE to be my favorite music video even to this day, even after 25 years since I first saw it. I own the single too...... just great

  • the part where the face turns inside out, I had to mortgage my loft to pay for - 3d animation -

then you can see I ran out of $ so I did all those cheap tricks with my face...glad you remember it - hope you like wilma fox in central park too - keep on smilin'

  • I still listen to the song at least once a week or so...... the 3D animation in SMILE still impresses me even more than that CGI garbage nowdays =)

  • @willpowers21148 The whole L.P stands the test of time, one of the forgotten gems of the 80's. Thank you so much for your music. xxx

  • thank you - I was just starting to write the book and you're spurred me on!

  • beszarok

  • wow - I know your jeans will never shrink in the wash!

thanks for letting me know it means something to you
