@LauraMalfoy2011 Yes, Kristi had an exhibition program to Roy Orbison's version of "Pretty Woman" in the 1991 - 92 season and she skated it in the 92 Olympics exhibition gala.
It's a shame she didn't have much artistry. I totally respect her for her technical skills, though. It's hard to express while being nervous at the same time.
I can't believe people think Kristi's artistry is better than Sasha Cohen... As far as this competition goes, I think this is one of the worst performances to win an Olympic gold I've ever seen...
@NettieKay Agreed. I think this was one of the most overrated gold medal performances in figure skating. Obviously, things were different back then, but even for 1992, this was pretty uninspired and lackluster.
@NettieKay um because it is. kristi continued to develop her artistry once she went pro, and she is famous for her pro career (back in the 90's when pro skating actually thrived). also, don't mention sasha in the same sentence as a legend like kristi. sasha who couldn't even skate 2 clean programs in a row, vs kristi who was pushing the technical envelope in the early 90's with triple lutz-triple toe combinations
@callasalive Sasha is inconsistent but that doesn't mean you can just write her off. Kristi is great too, but IMO Sasha's "Malaguena" was superior. Doesn't mean Sasha is ALWAYS better than Kristi but her Malaguena was.
As for touching the audience Cohen has hardly any performances that moved the audience. I saw many of her performances at Nationals live and she the reaction was partially enthuastic but never mesmorized or ectastic. It was a sharp contrast to Kwan. Sasha is mostly about pretty positions and elegance, along with strong spins and spirals, she doesnt skate with her soul more than other skaters though except for maybe like 2 performances in her career.
Hold on! why are people bashing Michelle Kwan? She has beautiful extension, expression and speed flowing out of her jumps. Now as far as jumps I don't think she topped the same level of technical difficulty as the other top skaters and could have mastered more speed on her spins but I think she is a beautiful skater!
Also if Kristi had lost to Ito in 92 she would have gone on to 94 and crushed the field there easily, and had an even better overall record with more medals as the 92 Oly silver medalist, but 91, 92, 93, and 94 World Champion, and 94 Oly gold medalist. She admited the only reason she turned pro was her winning gold here, she was planning for 94 all along. So Kristi in no way was lucky to win an Oly gold. Even if Ito had done better and won here Kristi still would have for sure won Oly gold.
Queen Kristi also competed against Michelle at the 97 Ultimate Four and in the short program when both skated cleanly Kristi won and beat her on artistic scores too.
Closely listen to an Inception dvd made prior to the January the 8th Tucson shooting, especially around the dialogue, "Do It." Check my quotes for more information.
She did these triple triple combinations in 1992! In fact, she did 6 very difficult jumps with great variety. She only doubled the salchow and fell one triple jump. Very difficult but yet beautiful artistry program! I've rarely seen program like it.
honestly i don't understand how you can be so rude and mean! So what she fell i mean no one is perfect! when you are able to do this sort of stuff then you might have the right to critisize because not everybody is able todo things like triple lutzes!
Kwan and Witt were light years beyond Yamaguchi. She looks just like what she is -- a spoiled little princess whose parents bought her a figure-skating career. Aside from the falls, there is no expressiveness in her skating. She just goes through the rehearsed motions like a little girl.
Kristi still deserved her OGM (made all the more possible by the other skaters making mistakes as well). The first half of this performance was very nice. Her choreography throughout was difficult and solid. She also had a wonderful short program. Kristi was the most complete skater of all of the ladies there.
Wow, what a beautiful triple-triple combination (and not an easy one too!). Kristi was so far ahead of her time and this was a great performance. Speed, grace, fire, and athleticism all rolled into a magnificent performance in the sport's grandest stage.
Kristi is/was/will always be a true champion! She was so talented and pushed the boundaries of the sport athletically and artistically. This performance (and that difficult triple-triple at the start) proves that she had all those skills PLUS championship mettle.
@anubethc45 Yes, Sasha's 2004 Malaguena short program is a masterpiece (far better than Kristi's '92 LP version). She just skated the same style all of time. I would have loved to have seen Sasha step outside the box like Michelle did many times. Sasha did do that spin the best (Yuna's looks mediocre compared to Sasha's as well).
@anubethc45 But Sasha "expressive" artistry was one note... She did the same old same old. Michelle Kwan was better and more versatile with her artisty (I could never see Sasha skating to TRV or TFB). How many times did Sasha end her program with that spin where she lifts her leg up to her face?
I think, at the time, Kristi was the best there was at artistry. Of course, Kwan, Cohen, and others have eclipsed her for sure. While I thought she was really consistent, and I agree she deserved to win here, I always felt that Ito was the best skater at this time and simply caved under the pressure in the short program. For some reason, I just can't get emotionally attached to her programs. It's like she's taking a test and nailing all the answers.
@mlc2005 Well, Sasha Cohen was beyond artistic....she was poetry in motion...but isn't Kristi incredible..I think I see your point in saying that she was taking a test and nailing all the answers...but she is superb in acing the test! That other skater...the lol was always always always just a robotic machine and simply did the minimum.
@getrealandsee Kristi was lucky that everyone at this Olympics was imperfect in the long program. I think that Kwan's '98 Olympic long program was superior (she wasn't at her very best like Nationals, but she was still great). Nailing all the answers? Where was her triple salchow most of the time? Kristi WAS overrated here and most of her other competitions (I think that only clean LP was at the '92 Nationals). Almost all 5.9's for artistry with a bad fall and a doubled jump?
@getrealandsee There's NO WAY that she deserved 5.8's for techincal as well (I would have given her a 5.6, 5.7). Her spiral and spins were also mediocre. Your double standards and dishonesty are absurd...
@getrealandsee A robotic machine that simply did the minimum? Is that why you watch her programs over and over? Cohen was a terrible jumper and her artistry was one note (she was nowhere near as good and versatile as Kwan). When did Sasha ever skate a 7 triple performance at a major? You call this performance "superb"? I find it funny that you got angry when Kwan won the silver at the '97 Worlds with 6 clean triples out of 7 (with the triple-triple) and a MUCH more difficult program...
@Karosanyo Yep, I sure do call this superb. And Kristie has an Olympic Gold Medal to show for it. Might I suggest that you revisit the 2002 Olympic Short of that other skater and see what the commentators actually SAY..not just posters' opinions...the real deal if you will...'cautious spark'...'checking things off' and that other skater was gifted the short program in a vailant attempt to (despite her minimal efforts in any competition) to push her to the top of the podium. Second try. FAILURE!
@getrealandsee LOL! Minimal efforts in any competition? What an ignorant and dishonest statement. Kristie was lucky that everyone made mistakes here. She FELL and doubled a jump! This was FAR from "superb". Michelle Kwan is a much better skater. Did Kristie ever have have a 7 triple performance at Worlds or the Olympics? Kwan did many times. I know that she had one at Nationals that year. Those commentators also said that that other skater deserved to win the SP after they were done...
@Karosanyo Why are mentioning Michelle Kwan here on a video with a superb athlete, competitor, honest champion who earned her scores? Who always upped the ante, assumed nothing and skated with her heart, soul, and skates? You might want to go back to that mediocre person's videos and comment on how gracefully she fell..how she 'competed' with a sub par field, lowered the standards of figure skating to the point where it became questionable as a 'sport'. This is not the place for timid cheats.
@getrealandsee Michelle Kwan IS a great figure skater. She earned ALL of her titles and scores. Michelle Kwan is a superior skater. I actually think that Kristi's scores were WAY too high here (falling and doubling two jumps and getting 5.9s?). Why are you ALWAYS watching and putting that "mediocre" skater's performances on your favorites? You watch and comment on Kwan's videos more than any other skater on here. You keep tellling yourself that...
@getrealandsee Tara, Irina and Lu Chen were sub par? I agree with you that Sasha was (she was an AWFUL competitor). I still say that Kwan was a better skater than Kristi (she never had a 7 triple performance at Worlds or the Olympics). Kwan's artistry, elements (spirals, etc.) and consistant jumps were better. LOL! Lowered the standards of figure skating? How lame and ignorant of you. Just ask all of the skaters today (Yuna, etc.). Kwan was never a cheat.
@getrealandsee Yes, this board is for debating and discussing skaters (I see nothing wrong with comparing Kristi to a superior skater). It's NOT for throwing around vindictive and lame personal attacks!
@Karosanyo Then why are you? Kristi is the OGM for 1992. She represented the USA with honesty, integrity, courage, and fire. She demonstrated true respect for the magnitude of the Olympics and assumed nothing coming in. I shall disregard your reference to that mediocre at best person whom you appear to consider superior. This is Kristi's video and she skated away with Olympic Gold. If one must mention that other one (and YOU named names..not I)...please remember 3 FAILURES.
@getrealandsee When did I personally attack Kristi? You're ALWAYS throwing around vindictive posts on Kwan's videos! I DON'T make these ignorant and off-the-cuff posts about them personally. I discuss SKATING. Medicore at best? Michelle Kwan was a great skater. I know that you have a lot of issues with her (you're ALWAYS watching and posting on her videos). Yes, you're ALWAYS disregarding Kwan like she's an object. I like to call human beings by their names...
@Karosanyo Well, you assumed you knew the human being I was speaking of in terms of that other skater and you could very well be wrong. You know nothinng of me...nothing. I was minding my own business on this forum and you barged in to defend that other skater of whom you assume I speak. And you are right....KWAN competed in two Olympics and used a third for self promotion and pity. I only mention her name here as she is the ONLY one'souless enough' ever to pull such a dirty ugly move.
@getrealandsee When did I even state that I personally knew Kwan? I DON'T make ignorant and off-the-cuff assumptions like you do.... I DON'T personally attack other skaters on here like you do about Kwan. YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT Michelle Kwan! These are your opinions AND assumptions. Yes, I have your number. I went on here to this this performance after MANY years and I saw more of your vindictive and nasty posts about Kwan. I WILL counter your posts when I see fit. Get used to it!
@getrealandsee Unlike Kwan, Kristi WAS lucky at the Olympics. I have NEVER seen Kristi skate better than Kwan did at the 1998 Nationals, 1996, 2000-2001 Worlds. Kwan's '98 Olympics skate was even better than this (and Kwan was far from here best there). The Olympics are just another Worlds that comes every four years. Kwan skated very well in '98 and had two mistakes in 02 (just like Kristi did). I am sure if that Olympics were every year Kwan would have one. Oh, and Kwan only competed twice.
@Karosanyo Why are you so intent on following me around. LUCK had zip to do with Kristi's win here...she trained, worked, honed her skills, kept her nerves in check, skated like a true Olympian with respect for the huge magnitude of this competiton. She didn't assume that she had the Gold in the bag before she got off the plane. You keep harping on that stupid 1998 Nats gift to that other skater...and it was a gift...oh, poor poor little thing...her foot hurts so let's give her the Gold. And 6s
@getrealandsee Why are you so intent on posting vindictive posts about Michelle Kwan? I don't follow you around on every video on here! Whenever I watch a figure skating video (usually on Kwan's videos) I always see your NASTY and truly hateful posts about Kwan. Yes, Kristi WAS lucky that Midori made mistakes. Everyone here made mistakes. Kept her nerves in check? Is that why she fell and doubled a jump? You assuming that Kwan assumed that she had the gold in the bag IS an ignorant assumption!
@getrealandsee LOL! More dishonest statements... Michelle Kwan's 1998 National skate is better than most skaters entire body of work... It was a "gift"? How lame of you. Kwan deserved that win for that flat out masterpiece (perhaps the greatest performance by a female figure skater). She deserved ALL 6s for that skate. Why do you always watch this "stupid" National performance?
@Karosanyo Kwan's body of work will never equate to an Olympic Gold Medal. She is a fake and a pretender to the throne of greatness reserved for true, honest athletes. Most of her titles, medals, and 6s were a result of judging bias and favoritism. And she laps it up and loves to tout it all.. but this is Kristi's video/moment. Kristi respected herself and the sport, knew when to skate like a champion, earn her marks, and has an OGM to prove it.
@allenglandlawns Yes, Kwan was never lucky at the Olympics like most other skaters... It's funny that all of the skaters that I love and respect the most don't have an OGM that comes EVERY FOUR YEARS! Please elaborate how Kwan is a fake and a pretender. This is so sick. You don't even know this woman! What the hell? Kwan deserved all of her titles and medals. There was no judging bias and favoritism most of the time with Kwan....
@allenglandlawns Sorry, there is NO WAY that Kristi deserved 5.9s for a fall and a doubled jump! This is Kristi's video/moment? At least I am NOT throwing around NASTY and IGNORANT assumptions about her personally! You're ALWAYS coming on Kwan's videos and stating the same vindictive garbage on her moments! You love to dirty up her videos with your OPINIONS. Take a step back and look at yourself!
@Karosanyo Dirty up? It's dirty when true and honest athletes are trashed in the name of the LOL. Why does Kwan need all this desperate protection if she's as gracious and honest as you say she is? Oh man, I bet it stings you to see your favorite icon have her belly exposed. True and honest figures stand in the face of heat and criticism without needing protection from it. Kwan never learned and that is a big part of what makes her ignorant, arrogant, and a loser whether she won the OGM or not.
@allenglandlawns Protection? No, I feel that your vindictive and nasty posts are truly uncalled for. I will counter your personal attacks. You have NOTHING to back up your OPINIONS. Her "belly" exposed? Your twisted opinions? No, your posts don't bother me at all (I know that you have a MAJOR problem when it comes to Kwan). You are just an obsessed fan of hers (the scay kind). I really do like you, Allenglandlawns. Your obsession with Kwan is just truly disturbing to me.
@serenakicksass: I don't think I've ever seen a remotely positive comment from you ever. I didn't say Cohen was a better overall skater than kristi, and she certainly wasn't consistent. I merely said that, in terms of artistry (emotionally connecting with an audience) I felt that Kwan (imo the best of all time at that) and also Cohen surpassed Kristi. But that isn't to say Kristi was not a brilliant skater who was much more consistent than Cohen.
@mlc2005 Kristi is a better skater than Sasha Cohen in everyway. Much better jumps, consistency, artistry, skating skills. OK Sasha had slighty better spins and spirals, but that is all. Sasha was not more artistic, there is more to artistry than hitting pretty positions. Kristi had much better choreography, much better basic skating than Sasha who was slow and had shallow wobbly edges, better interpretation, use of the ice, variation of speed. Sasha is one of the most overrated skaters
@mlc2005 Ito was a strong jumper, but she had no stretch or extension to her spirals and spins, and her artistry was weaker. Two triple lutzes and one in combo w/a triple toe in the Olympic long program for Yama. Kwan, Cohen, and Slutskya didnt accomplish that.
Despite all the difficult jumps in this routine - the opening 3/lutz x 3/toe combo, the second triple lutz, the beautiful 3/flip - my favorite parts of this routine are her exquisite double axels and gorgeous flying sit-spin.
@Shakeshack78 I agree. Kristi was the best at those Olympics and deserved her OGM. I just don't feel that she should have received almost all 5.9's for presentation with a fall and a doubled jump...
@Karosanyo That's just typical Olympic's politics..........seems to happen most in Skating & Gymnastics. She was the favorite going in so she tended to get the better scores. I was glad that Ito got a medal too.........she fell a few times but her difficulty was up there..............
@Shakeshack78 It wasn't all politics. While Yamaguchi was the world champion, Ito was considered to be a favourite as well (and she had the 3Axel). You need to remember that 2 years before the Olympics, Trenary won the world championship by doing a 3Flip, and the bronze went to a skater who did 3Toe and 3Salchow.
Kerrigan wasn't ready yet, Harding was Harding, and Bonaly was not going to win because she didn't pay her dues yet. Had Ito placed 3rd in the SP she would have won.
@a5615 Ha Ha, Harding was Harding!!! Just heard she's pregnant!!! Ito was very impressive (I saw a tour of champions after these games w/both her & Yamaguchi and they were my favorites---seeing skating in person really makes you realize how difficult it really is!). I think she just buckled under the pressure at these games and her falls cost her. If she had landed all her triple axles she would have won gold, no question.
how come we don't see skating like this anymore? Now all I see is the same thing, triple toe loops are all they're allowed to do anymore. She makes skating her own and she does her own thing, which I find more attractive than just pleasing strict judges.
@Leahh125 I agree. Sasha's 2004 short program is a masterpiece. Along with Michelle Kwan's Rach and EOE, that's the best short program ever done by a woman.
I'm not seeing how that slow section is the most difficult. Was he referring to the fact that she put 2 triples in her slow section, one with a one foot glide into it, or was he talking about the footwork? The footwork didn't look that hard, relatively speaking.
@OapostropheC It was the hardest part FOR KRISTI. She has always struggled more on the edge jumps, especially the salcow...I think she the only major competition she landed it was the 92 nationals.
Such a beautiful spiral - no ugly catch foot and its not perpendicular with the ice - it's just a beautiful traditional sprial with good extension and lovely, pointed toes.
Kristi really did not have any weaknesses that I can see, even after 18 years. About triple jumps: in Albertville, ladies (and men, too) were falling all over the place trying to do triple-this and triple-that, and forcing themselves to speeds that they could not always control. But here, great programs for Kristi; she truly won her gold medal, and so many hearts as well. About her dress: the top looked HEAVY. The flowy red one she wore at March Worlds suited her and music better, IMHO.
luck of gracefulness in her body, i can see some of the japan ladies skater today ..skates like her need to improve the body and hand movement...that's all
I have to say that despite the incredible opening 3/3 combo I think her most beautiful jump is the double axel - its absolutely exquisite - she gets such hight, lovely position in the air, completes the 2 1/2 rotations in the air and lands on a clean b/o edge, and then just glides out of the jump with such speed.
A lot of people seem to be confused about the progression of jumping skills over the years. Kristi was one of the best jumpers of her era, to be sure, but compared to the likes of Yuna and Mao, her jumps were fairly low to the ice, with slow entries and exits. What makes a jumper great is not just the number of rotations. If you consider all of these factors, the only jumper from that era comparable to Yuna and Mao was Midori Ito.
@sleepyjl77 True, Yu-na carries more speed across the ice into her jumps than anyone and her jumps have more flight. But Kristi's technique was absolutely impeccable. Even though it doesn't look like she has a lot of height, there was never any under rotation or unstable edges in or out of her jumps, which is something all the skaters of today struggle with on occasion--even Yu-na. This is perhaps the result of Kristi having skated figures, but whatever.
No i don't agree. Yuna is cold and like tin man needing oil on ice. She reached higher levels where she is now thanks to her coach Brian Orser. She should be thankful. She is not near the level of Kristi who defines the perfect modern figure skating for women. Everything is perfect. The line, the sharpness in her moves but still soft, the artistry and interpretation, the command, and yes, the technical. I think the eras from the past were great, but the peak was 90s era Yamaguchi-Ito-Harding era
I dont know if interest is down by that much where I live. At my rink we had to lengthen free skating two more hours on Thursdays and Saturdays to meet the demand. Plus we're running at of room in basic 1 (the beginning class.)
More over, Kristi tried every triple jump (accept the axel), Yu-na did not. She cannot do a triple loop. Mao Asada didn't either, she left out two triples. Without the triple Axel Asada isn't much of a jumper.
@jondavwal she tried triple axel before, and she also give compliments to midori's jumps in a video. you can check it on youtube. :) kristi has the grace and artistry on the ice, midori has jumps. no more skaters are better than two of them anymore.
@kev7978 I agree that nobody skates as well as either of them anymore with the exception of Yuna, but I think the current code of points really prevent Yuna from doing anything truly amazing on an artistic level. They are too busy adding difficulty to the steps whether it is appropriate or not. Kristi did try the triple axel and she came pretty close to landing it but her 3T/3L was consistent and great as was everything else she did except for the salchow.
@jondavwal Yuna did not try triple loop but she is able to do it. She did them during her Juniro years and during 2007-2008 season cup of china and cup of russia FS.
@jondavwal really? I haven't heard that before. Can you clarify the date her coach and Scott Hamilton stated that? I still thought she could do it because initially she was going to put it in 2008-2009 season but stated until the end of Olympics, she will not put triple loop but after the olympic season, if she competes, she will put the triple loop back into her routine.
You can not base the comparison on one missed triple loop. Kristi's transitions into her jumps were the greatest in history. There is almost no preparation on any jump except the lutz. Her artistry is flawless. The first 2 minutes of this program are some of the greatest ever skated and technically she is light years ahead of Kwan, who never attempted the 3L/3T combo and who had a layback that a 4 year old could do better. Yu-na is the first skater to compare to Kristi.
How did this become a comparison to Kwan? I am a Kristi fan and this is a very good performance, but it was not her best and not the one that should be used to compare her to Michelle. She had only 5 clean triples. Michelle had 7 triples in the 1998 Olys and no mistakes. And if laybacks were the mark of a great skater, Sarah Hughes would be right up there at the top.
@idolfan9495 Michelle's program did not include a triple triple combination. You can't compare that 1998 program to this one. I happen to think Sarah Hughes was a great skater. I am not a Kwan fan at all. I think she played it safe. I think her choreography was always the same. I think she thought she should be given victories despite what others did even if they outskated her and I think she set the sport back ten years.
@jondavwal Kristi did not include a triple loop and a triple salchow (she almost NEVER had a salchow). Kwan had 7 triples in '98. I can't compare Kwan's 1998 program to this one? Lol, Michelle Kwan's '98 Lyra puts to Kristi's program to shame (her 1998 National performance is a masterpiece). Michelle's choreography was always the same??? Salome, Lyra, Ariane, TRV, SOTBS, Aranjuez were highly diverse. Kwan was the most versatile with her artistry. Your theory about Kwan is ignorant...
Well, 5-Olympics and 18 years later, Kristi is still the last ladies Olympic Champion who also chose to participate at Worlds just right after the Olympics and actually win (defending her '91 World title and winning back-to-back championships.)
She is also the last American skater to have won the elusive Skating Triple Crown winning Nationals, Olympics and Worlds in the same season (1992.)
mao is better when it comes to technic, movement, performance. the only thing that mao lacks is olympic gold medal extorted by yuna and judges who got the korean money
i see some people try to compare Kristi with YuNa, The technical requirements have gone up since Kristi's time, Due to Kristi's hard time with the Sal-chow jump Yuna is a better jumper, but I say Kristi is the best artistic skater.
Kristi is the best skater ever for this modern/present era period. She was so complete and she was such an artist - not just the presentation, but the way it looks in being presented, her body was in such great form, poise, line, sharp but soft in her moves and detail. It was a real dancer and a real woman in every way.
If Michelle Kwan would handily get the gold and Yu Na the silver if they skated in the same scoring system at the SAME TIME even in the old scoring. Although the Japanese Asada would have gotten gold if she didn't make a mistake. Yu Na is amazing but OVER RATED! Yu Na is a bit COLD, Orser improved her though in that area.
This is the wierdest interchange I have ever seen - This was a wonderful program; and, she probably would not have won due to the BIG error on her 3/loop except that everyone else fell down as well and she had the most technically difficult program with the possible exception of Ito - but a 3/lutz+3/toe is pretty damn hard so I think it compares to the 3/axel and Ito missed her 3/3 combo.
I miss the artistry so much.

So what she fell i mean no one is perfect! when you are able to do this sort of stuff then you might have the right to critisize because not everybody is able todo things like triple lutzes!
animelova834 7 months ago
Kwan and Witt were light years beyond Yamaguchi. She looks just like what she is -- a spoiled little princess whose parents bought her a figure-skating career. Aside from the falls, there is no expressiveness in her skating. She just goes through the rehearsed motions like a little girl.

Kristi still deserved her OGM (made all the more possible by the other skaters making mistakes as well). The first half of this performance was very nice. Her choreography throughout was difficult and solid. She also had a wonderful short program. Kristi was the most complete skater of all of the ladies there.
Karosanyo 8 months ago
Wow, what a beautiful triple-triple combination (and not an easy one too!). Kristi was so far ahead of her time and this was a great performance. Speed, grace, fire, and athleticism all rolled into a magnificent performance in the sport's grandest stage.

Kristi is/was/will always be a true champion! She was so talented and pushed the boundaries of the sport athletically and artistically. This performance (and that difficult triple-triple at the start) proves that she had all those skills PLUS championship mettle.
allenglandlawns 10 months ago
@anubethc45 Yes, Sasha's 2004 Malaguena short program is a masterpiece (far better than Kristi's '92 LP version). She just skated the same style all of time. I would have loved to have seen Sasha step outside the box like Michelle did many times. Sasha did do that spin the best (Yuna's looks mediocre compared to Sasha's as well).
Karosanyo 10 months ago
@anubethc45 But Sasha "expressive" artistry was one note... She did the same old same old. Michelle Kwan was better and more versatile with her artisty (I could never see Sasha skating to TRV or TFB). How many times did Sasha end her program with that spin where she lifts her leg up to her face?
Karosanyo 10 months ago
That move at 1:45 is incredible...what is it called..does anyone know? I have never seen it before.
getrealandsee 10 months ago
I think, at the time, Kristi was the best there was at artistry. Of course, Kwan, Cohen, and others have eclipsed her for sure. While I thought she was really consistent, and I agree she deserved to win here, I always felt that Ito was the best skater at this time and simply caved under the pressure in the short program. For some reason, I just can't get emotionally attached to her programs. It's like she's taking a test and nailing all the answers.
mlc2005 10 months ago

Karosanyo 10 months ago
@getrealandsee There's NO WAY that she deserved 5.8's for techincal as well (I would have given her a 5.6, 5.7). Her spiral and spins were also mediocre. Your double standards and dishonesty are absurd...
Karosanyo 10 months ago
@getrealandsee A robotic machine that simply did the minimum? Is that why you watch her programs over and over? Cohen was a terrible jumper and her artistry was one note (she was nowhere near as good and versatile as Kwan). When did Sasha ever skate a 7 triple performance at a major? You call this performance "superb"? I find it funny that you got angry when Kwan won the silver at the '97 Worlds with 6 clean triples out of 7 (with the triple-triple) and a MUCH more difficult program...
Karosanyo 10 months ago
@Karosanyo Yep, I sure do call this superb. And Kristie has an Olympic Gold Medal to show for it. Might I suggest that you revisit the 2002 Olympic Short of that other skater and see what the commentators actually SAY..not just posters' opinions...the real deal if you will...'cautious spark'...'checking things off' and that other skater was gifted the short program in a vailant attempt to (despite her minimal efforts in any competition) to push her to the top of the podium. Second try. FAILURE!
getrealandsee 8 months ago
@getrealandsee LOL! Minimal efforts in any competition? What an ignorant and dishonest statement. Kristie was lucky that everyone made mistakes here. She FELL and doubled a jump! This was FAR from "superb". Michelle Kwan is a much better skater. Did Kristie ever have have a 7 triple performance at Worlds or the Olympics? Kwan did many times. I know that she had one at Nationals that year. Those commentators also said that that other skater deserved to win the SP after they were done...
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@Karosanyo Why are mentioning Michelle Kwan here on a video with a superb athlete, competitor, honest champion who earned her scores? Who always upped the ante, assumed nothing and skated with her heart, soul, and skates? You might want to go back to that mediocre person's videos and comment on how gracefully she fell..how she 'competed' with a sub par field, lowered the standards of figure skating to the point where it became questionable as a 'sport'. This is not the place for timid cheats.
getrealandsee 8 months ago
@getrealandsee Michelle Kwan IS a great figure skater. She earned ALL of her titles and scores. Michelle Kwan is a superior skater. I actually think that Kristi's scores were WAY too high here (falling and doubling two jumps and getting 5.9s?). Why are you ALWAYS watching and putting that "mediocre" skater's performances on your favorites? You watch and comment on Kwan's videos more than any other skater on here. You keep tellling yourself that...
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@getrealandsee Tara, Irina and Lu Chen were sub par? I agree with you that Sasha was (she was an AWFUL competitor). I still say that Kwan was a better skater than Kristi (she never had a 7 triple performance at Worlds or the Olympics). Kwan's artistry, elements (spirals, etc.) and consistant jumps were better. LOL! Lowered the standards of figure skating? How lame and ignorant of you. Just ask all of the skaters today (Yuna, etc.). Kwan was never a cheat.
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@getrealandsee Yes, this board is for debating and discussing skaters (I see nothing wrong with comparing Kristi to a superior skater). It's NOT for throwing around vindictive and lame personal attacks!
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@Karosanyo Then why are you? Kristi is the OGM for 1992. She represented the USA with honesty, integrity, courage, and fire. She demonstrated true respect for the magnitude of the Olympics and assumed nothing coming in. I shall disregard your reference to that mediocre at best person whom you appear to consider superior. This is Kristi's video and she skated away with Olympic Gold. If one must mention that other one (and YOU named names..not I)...please remember 3 FAILURES.
getrealandsee 8 months ago
@getrealandsee When did I personally attack Kristi? You're ALWAYS throwing around vindictive posts on Kwan's videos! I DON'T make these ignorant and off-the-cuff posts about them personally. I discuss SKATING. Medicore at best? Michelle Kwan was a great skater. I know that you have a lot of issues with her (you're ALWAYS watching and posting on her videos). Yes, you're ALWAYS disregarding Kwan like she's an object. I like to call human beings by their names...
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@Karosanyo Well, you assumed you knew the human being I was speaking of in terms of that other skater and you could very well be wrong. You know nothinng of me...nothing. I was minding my own business on this forum and you barged in to defend that other skater of whom you assume I speak. And you are right....KWAN competed in two Olympics and used a third for self promotion and pity. I only mention her name here as she is the ONLY one'souless enough' ever to pull such a dirty ugly move.
getrealandsee 8 months ago
@getrealandsee When did I even state that I personally knew Kwan? I DON'T make ignorant and off-the-cuff assumptions like you do.... I DON'T personally attack other skaters on here like you do about Kwan. YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT Michelle Kwan! These are your opinions AND assumptions. Yes, I have your number. I went on here to this this performance after MANY years and I saw more of your vindictive and nasty posts about Kwan. I WILL counter your posts when I see fit. Get used to it!
Karosanyo 8 months ago
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@Karosanyo Why are you so intent on following me around. LUCK had zip to do with Kristi's win here...she trained, worked, honed her skills, kept her nerves in check, skated like a true Olympian with respect for the huge magnitude of this competiton. She didn't assume that she had the Gold in the bag before she got off the plane. You keep harping on that stupid 1998 Nats gift to that other skater...and it was a gift...oh, poor poor little thing...her foot hurts so let's give her the Gold. And 6s
getrealandsee 8 months ago
@getrealandsee Why are you so intent on posting vindictive posts about Michelle Kwan? I don't follow you around on every video on here! Whenever I watch a figure skating video (usually on Kwan's videos) I always see your NASTY and truly hateful posts about Kwan. Yes, Kristi WAS lucky that Midori made mistakes. Everyone here made mistakes. Kept her nerves in check? Is that why she fell and doubled a jump? You assuming that Kwan assumed that she had the gold in the bag IS an ignorant assumption!
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@getrealandsee LOL! More dishonest statements... Michelle Kwan's 1998 National skate is better than most skaters entire body of work... It was a "gift"? How lame of you. Kwan deserved that win for that flat out masterpiece (perhaps the greatest performance by a female figure skater). She deserved ALL 6s for that skate. Why do you always watch this "stupid" National performance?
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@Karosanyo Kwan's body of work will never equate to an Olympic Gold Medal. She is a fake and a pretender to the throne of greatness reserved for true, honest athletes. Most of her titles, medals, and 6s were a result of judging bias and favoritism. And she laps it up and loves to tout it all.. but this is Kristi's video/moment. Kristi respected herself and the sport, knew when to skate like a champion, earn her marks, and has an OGM to prove it.
allenglandlawns 8 months ago
@allenglandlawns Yes, Kwan was never lucky at the Olympics like most other skaters... It's funny that all of the skaters that I love and respect the most don't have an OGM that comes EVERY FOUR YEARS! Please elaborate how Kwan is a fake and a pretender. This is so sick. You don't even know this woman! What the hell? Kwan deserved all of her titles and medals. There was no judging bias and favoritism most of the time with Kwan....
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@allenglandlawns Sorry, there is NO WAY that Kristi deserved 5.9s for a fall and a doubled jump! This is Kristi's video/moment? At least I am NOT throwing around NASTY and IGNORANT assumptions about her personally! You're ALWAYS coming on Kwan's videos and stating the same vindictive garbage on her moments! You love to dirty up her videos with your OPINIONS. Take a step back and look at yourself!
Karosanyo 8 months ago
@Karosanyo Dirty up? It's dirty when true and honest athletes are trashed in the name of the LOL. Why does Kwan need all this desperate protection if she's as gracious and honest as you say she is? Oh man, I bet it stings you to see your favorite icon have her belly exposed. True and honest figures stand in the face of heat and criticism without needing protection from it. Kwan never learned and that is a big part of what makes her ignorant, arrogant, and a loser whether she won the OGM or not.
allenglandlawns 8 months ago
@allenglandlawns Protection? No, I feel that your vindictive and nasty posts are truly uncalled for. I will counter your personal attacks. You have NOTHING to back up your OPINIONS. Her "belly" exposed? Your twisted opinions? No, your posts don't bother me at all (I know that you have a MAJOR problem when it comes to Kwan). You are just an obsessed fan of hers (the scay kind). I really do like you, Allenglandlawns. Your obsession with Kwan is just truly disturbing to me.

serenakicksass 6 months ago
@serenakicksass: I don't think I've ever seen a remotely positive comment from you ever. I didn't say Cohen was a better overall skater than kristi, and she certainly wasn't consistent. I merely said that, in terms of artistry (emotionally connecting with an audience) I felt that Kwan (imo the best of all time at that) and also Cohen surpassed Kristi. But that isn't to say Kristi was not a brilliant skater who was much more consistent than Cohen.
mlc2005 5 months ago
@mlc2005 Kristi is a better skater than Sasha Cohen in everyway. Much better jumps, consistency, artistry, skating skills. OK Sasha had slighty better spins and spirals, but that is all. Sasha was not more artistic, there is more to artistry than hitting pretty positions. Kristi had much better choreography, much better basic skating than Sasha who was slow and had shallow wobbly edges, better interpretation, use of the ice, variation of speed. Sasha is one of the most overrated skaters
serenakicksass 4 months ago
@mlc2005 Ito was a strong jumper, but she had no stretch or extension to her spirals and spins, and her artistry was weaker. Two triple lutzes and one in combo w/a triple toe in the Olympic long program for Yama. Kwan, Cohen, and Slutskya didnt accomplish that.

@Shakeshack78 I agree. Kristi was the best at those Olympics and deserved her OGM. I just don't feel that she should have received almost all 5.9's for presentation with a fall and a doubled jump...
Karosanyo 1 year ago
@Karosanyo That's just typical Olympic's politics..........seems to happen most in Skating & Gymnastics. She was the favorite going in so she tended to get the better scores. I was glad that Ito got a medal too.........she fell a few times but her difficulty was up there..............
Shakeshack78 1 year ago
@Shakeshack78 It wasn't all politics. While Yamaguchi was the world champion, Ito was considered to be a favourite as well (and she had the 3Axel). You need to remember that 2 years before the Olympics, Trenary won the world championship by doing a 3Flip, and the bronze went to a skater who did 3Toe and 3Salchow.
Kerrigan wasn't ready yet, Harding was Harding, and Bonaly was not going to win because she didn't pay her dues yet. Had Ito placed 3rd in the SP she would have won.
a5615 1 year ago
@a5615 Ha Ha, Harding was Harding!!! Just heard she's pregnant!!! Ito was very impressive (I saw a tour of champions after these games w/both her & Yamaguchi and they were my favorites---seeing skating in person really makes you realize how difficult it really is!). I think she just buckled under the pressure at these games and her falls cost her. If she had landed all her triple axles she would have won gold, no question.

I'm not seeing how that slow section is the most difficult. Was he referring to the fact that she put 2 triples in her slow section, one with a one foot glide into it, or was he talking about the footwork? The footwork didn't look that hard, relatively speaking.

If you consider all of these factors, the only jumper from that era comparable to Yuna and Mao was Midori Ito.
sleepyjl77 1 year ago 2

More over, Kristi tried every triple jump (accept the axel), Yu-na did not. She cannot do a triple loop. Mao Asada didn't either, she left out two triples. Without the triple Axel Asada isn't much of a jumper.
jondavwal 1 year ago
@jondavwal she tried triple axel before, and she also give compliments to midori's jumps in a video. you can check it on youtube. :) kristi has the grace and artistry on the ice, midori has jumps. no more skaters are better than two of them anymore.
kev7978 1 year ago
@kev7978 I agree that nobody skates as well as either of them anymore with the exception of Yuna, but I think the current code of points really prevent Yuna from doing anything truly amazing on an artistic level. They are too busy adding difficulty to the steps whether it is appropriate or not. Kristi did try the triple axel and she came pretty close to landing it but her 3T/3L was consistent and great as was everything else she did except for the salchow.
jondavwal 1 year ago
@jondavwal Yuna did not try triple loop but she is able to do it. She did them during her Juniro years and during 2007-2008 season cup of china and cup of russia FS.
wondersunmi 1 year ago
@wondersunmi According to her coach and to Scott Hamilton she is no longer capable of doing the triple loop.
jondavwal 1 year ago
@jondavwal really? I haven't heard that before. Can you clarify the date her coach and Scott Hamilton stated that? I still thought she could do it because initially she was going to put it in 2008-2009 season but stated until the end of Olympics, she will not put triple loop but after the olympic season, if she competes, she will put the triple loop back into her routine.
wondersunmi 1 year ago
You can not base the comparison on one missed triple loop. Kristi's transitions into her jumps were the greatest in history. There is almost no preparation on any jump except the lutz. Her artistry is flawless. The first 2 minutes of this program are some of the greatest ever skated and technically she is light years ahead of Kwan, who never attempted the 3L/3T combo and who had a layback that a 4 year old could do better. Yu-na is the first skater to compare to Kristi.
jondavwal 1 year ago
@jondavwal
How did this become a comparison to Kwan? I am a Kristi fan and this is a very good performance, but it was not her best and not the one that should be used to compare her to Michelle. She had only 5 clean triples. Michelle had 7 triples in the 1998 Olys and no mistakes. And if laybacks were the mark of a great skater, Sarah Hughes would be right up there at the top.
idolfan9495 1 year ago
@idolfan9495 Michelle's program did not include a triple triple combination. You can't compare that 1998 program to this one. I happen to think Sarah Hughes was a great skater. I am not a Kwan fan at all. I think she played it safe. I think her choreography was always the same. I think she thought she should be given victories despite what others did even if they outskated her and I think she set the sport back ten years.
jondavwal 1 year ago

She's honestly one of the best figure skaters, she got gold over Yu-na Kim!

i see some people try to compare Kristi with YuNa, The technical requirements have gone up since Kristi's time, Due to Kristi's hard time with the Sal-chow jump Yuna is a better jumper, but I say Kristi is the best artistic skater.

Kristi is the best skater ever for this modern/present era period. She was so complete and she was such an artist - not just the presentation, but the way it looks in being presented, her body was in such great form, poise, line, sharp but soft in her moves and detail. It was a real dancer and a real woman in every way.

@lookscudkill I think most people would put Katarina Witt as the best before the new scoring system, and Kim Yu-Na as the best after the new system.

She is NOT better than Yu-Na. Queen's performance was flawless. Kristi ate it here with weak techs.

I think Yu-Na is more comparable to Michelle Kwan.
konohanoshiroikiba 2 years ago 3
Not really because Kwan is only Silver medalist...
You719Tube 2 years ago 3
@konohanoshiroikiba Yu-Na had to be taught expression so they are not comparable.

I think Kristie could have pushed South
Korea's Kim Yu Na. She was just that
good.

@wegersfour and midori ito could've pushed kristi too.

Those were the days when people had actual talent. That's the reason why those records still haven't been broken.
