  • awesome

  • Awesome version! The Beat kick butt

  • That song perfectly fits me, YAY

    I love the SKA version.

    <3

  • one of my favorite songs, both the original and this version.

  • I was a huge fan of The Beat, back in the day.

And I often wondered what William "Smokey" Robinson thought of this version. I'm sure he thought it a great tribute to a monumental soul tune...but a Ska version? Who knows?

  • The Beat puts on one of the best live shows I've seen and I've seen them all. Please never stop touring Dave!

  • Excellent cover version of the old Smokey Robinson smash hit.

  • kwikbug, I have no idea what I said however my apologies...

  • got me tickets for 09 tour uk newcastle great ska band

  • I wasnt mad about the beat at the time but hats off, they sound great now. I was offended by their treatment of this song but now I have got my head out of my own backside I can enjoy it in its own right.

  • How come they are called "The English Beat" now back in my day I'm sure it was just "The Beat" still wicked though!

  • they're called "the english beat" only in america, for some legal reason or another, in england they're just "the beat"

  • I see, Thanks mate!

  • I think its because there was "The Beat" already in america. I think it was a phil collins concoction of a band, im not sure, ill stand corrected on that one.

  • I see, thanks mate!

  • Ffeenixx-

Jeedan and grimreepher already pointed this out, but I wanted to add that there were several other bands in the 80's that had (slightly) different names in the U.S. because there was already another a band by that name here.

    for example:

    Mission U.K.

    U.K Chameleons

    U.K. Subs

    etc.

I have been in record stores where they have a U.S. release as well as the British 'import' where the covers are identical, except for the addition of the words "U.K." in the band's name.

    I love the Beat!!

  • I love this band so much, but I was a baby when they were around. I've seen on youtube some contemporary live performance by them and they still soung really good, they are just brilliant lol, their music comes from somewhere I can really relate, musically any lol! Thanks for sharing.

    Tyler

    p.s. douche bag

  • Dearest Paul,

I am assuming that you think that I don'tb enjoy the sounds of The Beat?

Rest assured my friend, if you are thinking that, You are sorely mistaken!!!

The best band with the funkiest and most original tunes!! Except for a cover or two ( which in any case are superb!). I was replying to some other twat who was discrediting the band (for whatever reason)( seems to have gone now!).

Always looking at the old stuff, so always here!!!

  • Pretty Gay?

You obviously have no class, sense of decent music, or brains!!!! Plonker!!!

    WHA'PPEN

  • Met the band on the Renfrew ferry 2 yrs ago minus Dave, Steele & Cox...... Absolute gentlemen...... Great band....Great times....NB11

  • love this band to bits, everet the drummer taught me how to play the drums in his pub he used to have in brum it was called the mitre, what a sound bloke.respect to him.

  • OMG!

  • what is happening at the moment with the beat or the english beat??

i was told that at the moment there is 2 separate bands "The Beat" and "The English Beat" that are both part made up of the original lineup and part new members.

whereas originally in the 80's they were the same band

  • Well as I know it, in America they call them the English Beat, but over her in the good ol' UK we call them The Beat. Hope that makes sense. Skinbyrd

  • @punkfi So what's with the Special Beat Service?

  • @lcacwelder Special Beat Service was the third and final album for the English beat

  • @punkfi

That's right. there was a band here in the states with the same name (not near as popular as the UK version). Cheers for the explanation!

  • @punkfi -Back in the day there was another band named The Beat in the US. so the couldn't use that in the States

  • @punkfi - as I recall back in the day there was another band named "The Beat" in the U.S. so The "English" Beat it was.

  • @punkfi but we didn't call "Jay and the Americans" just "Jay and the"

  • When was this recorded?

  • wikid bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbra!!!!!!

  • Possibly most underrated band ever (well, apart from Marillion...)

  • best tune ever brilliant

  • tuuunnneee, cant help but put a smile on my face :-)

  • love it!
