haha absolute nonsense. the only circular argument is yours as it has no point.
Look I like Malcolm, the way he has strung all you pseudo intellectuals along all these years with his svengali artisan mind games is hilarious. Like I said originally, It's a shame his actual achievements and input can't now be celebrated. But that would mean the yawning gullibility of all those so eager to theorise and intellectualise being unveiled at last, and that would never do, would it?
Ah-hah, blown it. That's not what you said @ all. It's as I said all along, it's you who's been strung along. You're obsessed Mr 2ivanhoe. Pick out any random McLaren funeral vid, & there you are giving it your best parodic Alf Garnett largings for all to see "The only thing he invented was bleeding bondage trahsers!!!" You're like a fig-box of Malcom McLaren's imagination made video flesh, so you are sir.
@xwsftassell "What a shame the reality of Mclaren's achievement and input cant be celebrated instead of the constant perpetuating of the "svengali, puppet master, creator, inventor" bullshit myth."
read and weep puppet, you can read cant you?
is that the sound of barrels being scraped? decide what your point is exactly and let me know.
What about the Rotten eulogies? You're all over the place, dad.
My point is, as it says in the top bit...
"The highest ambition of the integrated spectacular is still; that the secret agents become revolutionaries and that the revolutionaries become secret agents."
I come back here everyday cos some ignorant deluded fool keeps biting.
from beyond the grave he keeps the mythical bullshit perpetuating through those susceptible to fantasy and immune to reality. Just has he always has. I've always stated it wouldn't have happened without him so kinda nullifies your point. Scratch the surface of the fantasist and there's nothing there.
@2ivanhoe But instead of seeing the phenomenon as a whole, with several component parts, there you are trying to pit the myth of Rotten against the myth of McLaren, which can only lead to a Patrick Magoohan circular "6 of 1 + half a dozen of the other" circular argument. Anyone who can watch him on that butter ad without wanting to puke, must have the tin stomach characteristic of an ignorant deluded fantasist.
Yeah, 'cause you're not talking to me, you're talking to the gallery. Truth is: The Pistols, Slits, Subway Sect, The Clash, The Damned, etc wouldn't have existed without McLaren, but he employed radical manoeuvers within the hub of all that which distorted reality & squeezed people like lemons. That's why I called you a victim of punk, 'cause even from beyond the grave he's still squeezing you like a lemon. That's why you come back here every day.
well pick and mixing someone's history after the event from your armchair to suit your own agenda, all very Mclaren. Fantasy as art is one thing, fantasy art as an alternative reality is a little desperate and silly. Theorists always have to invent hypothesis, stretching already tenuous analogies beyond any relevance, to mask their own inadequacies. Truth might not be as titillating but it survives, somewhere.
That's funny, 'cause that's what I thought you were doing. You haven't even acknowledged that I have a mixed, but in some parts very low opinion of the whole McLaren thing, so I'll take it you're just playing to the peanut gallery. Fair enough. be my guest.
I say it cos I am aware of the "FACTS". they speak for themselves if people dig beneath the fantasy bullshit. You're a victim of the hype, hook line and sinker. As a media manipulator,a fantasist, he was second to none. as a creator/inventor/artist his legacy is a pair of bondage trousers. strip away the hysterical fluff the pretentious artistic waffle and choose your cultural icon out of the substance of the wreckage .
Nah, I'm not a victim of that particularly. I just like music, which Mclaren famously disdained. I sometimes think the best "Philip K. Dick alternative future" thing Rotten could've done after Metal Box would've been to have enrolled @ The Guild Hall School of Music. Maybe we wouldn't have had to have suffered the extremely dull 30 year obsession with process, variants of detournement, & completely worthless accelerated media particles masquerading as cultural icons, artists, musicians, humans.
true, but take a look at the actual individual contributions of those protagonists and what have you got thirty four years on? a shop keeper come mischief maker, a dress maker, the man who gave us the clash (gee thanks for that!) and arguably the greatest/ lyricist /frontman /songwriter we have ever seen. It wouldn't have happened without most of them but when credit is dished out it's not hard to see where the lions share belongs.
But you only say that 'cause you're a victim of punk + you want to claim that "authenticity" = a sly proxy way of claiming authorship. I interviewed a lot of people @ this, but didn't upload 'cause it was like Malc's (Debord's) "Karaoke" thing. A "pirate hat victim" mouthing the words that go with that part + claiming proxy authorship, a "Waltz Darling victim" mouthing the words that go with that, "I was there @ the birth, darling" etc. It was like the end scene in Truffaut's "Fahrenheit 451".
What a shame the reality of Mclaren's achievement and input cant be celebrated instead of the constant perpetuating of the "svengali, puppet master, creator, inventor" bullshit myth.
he played his part, a massive part, but invented nothing but bondage trousers.
@xwsftassell I have no interest in a half arsed skipping song, i doubt theres that many americans that do either. everything else the man did died on its arse, he consistently tried to prove that he was the vital ingredient and consistently failed.
I think a lot of people in Punk Rock thought they were The Vital Ingredient, McLaren, obviously, but also: Bernard "I Am Punk Rock" Rhodes, John "You'll Never Put A Better Bit o' Butter On Your Knife" Lydon, "Dame" Vivienne Westwood. What's closer to the truth is: collectively they tapped into an underground stream in the English psyche which, after exploding, petered out fast with few of the protagonists being able to find a decent chair after the furniture had been re-arranged, so-to-speak.
sad loss i think that it was very touching thast they chose to play Sid Vicious MY WAY as they drove Malcom to his place of rest ...... i also feel that Malcom would,ve been or would be touched by this gesture as at the time of the Pistols breaking up Malcom did bellieve in Sid and his Talent and had planned to take him on to bigger things .......
Malcolm-----you were full of hot air, and you pissed me off in your interviews by being so pompous.....but you certainly had a talent that no many people have. You made things happen so I have enormous respect for you. I loved what you brought to the world and your control over the media! I'm gonna miss seeing you interviewed........I quite enjoyed not quite warming to your ego! Cheers! I know you will not rest in peace......either the devil or God are now gonna get some PR ideas from you!!
Goodbye Malcolm - He may have been Malcolm The Terrible in the eyes of the press but we loved him....he gave young kids like me (12yrs old in 77) the chance to be heard, to have ideas and be in a band....God bless ya Malcolm....Rest well old friend.....Remember....We are now a Legend...RIP.
Amazing that the right people met each other at the right time, to create soemthing amazing like the Sex Pistols and thanks to Labour putting more money into education at that time, working class lads could speak out against the class system, while at one time all they would have been able to be is cannon fodder for the few at the top without being allowed to speak out against it.
He brought us many things in his time but the most famous of all was punk rock and the Sex Pistols.Cheers Malcolm and thanks for posting this up xwsftassell. We are now legend.

@2ivanhoe. It's a view, but you're forgetting - The Sex Pistols meant little to a lot of people, particularly Americans where "Buffalo Gals" did.
