Oh, and mind you, the retreating Germans who are pissed off at something are forcing him to wear a Waffen SS uniform instead of a Finnish uniform as they know Soviets will shoot them at sight.
Thanks for pointing out that the Finnish was slow! After having lived in Stockholm for a while I managed to learn some, but Ville Haapasalo left me in the dust! It seemed at times that Anni's Sami was close at times to Finish, like when she beckens them to come by saying something similar to "menään".
Oh yeah, and Wow! great movie! Thanks for posting.
Yeah, I got that. Point being: Finnish is no picnic to learn and then, to make matters worse, Ville goes at it lickety-split in this movie.(Though I have to wonder if there is a human being on the planet who does have a command of all three languages - I do well in Russian and some Finnish, but I flunked Sami in college.) Nevertheless, come 'round, say 8-ish and I'll pop it in for us to watch. It's almost as entertaining as reading the banter between the two of you. Thanks for the chuckle.
when I was first to Finland in 1960, nobody at the family farm knew english so dictionary and what I remembered from my grandmother who emigrated 1902...then I went to Joensuu and visited a penpal...her English was great...one day 2 friends of hers came 'round who knew no English so I used my Finnish...those girls would laugh and giggle often...after they left, I asked my friend why they laughed..she said 'your Finnish is so quaint' so I'd been using proper Finnish from1902 :)
@granskare Long time, no see, friend. Well, yes, Estonians who have almost the same language laugh at us for speaking "slowly". But that is not true if you listen to younger urban folks. Their assorted insults and curses come faster than from an MG-42. The reason the Finnish soldier in this (great) movie speaks slowly and overly clearly is that he wants the Russian to understand him. Which is, of course, futile. And BasicModelling, didn't you recognise the words "not a fascist - a democrat"
Does anyone know the name of the song in this trailer? From 1.13 -->

You all talk about languages, I want to say a few, very few things about the movie.
It was GREAT. I can't remember ever laughing so heartidly whie watching any movie!!!
So original, so comic. And so fascinating, especially the shamanistic ritual which I hold to be based on true customs.
Folks!!
Whoever hasn't seen this yet, find it and enjoy!
