wow I havent seen this clip in soooo long. I too remember the originsl airing with Ricky Dillard and New G, Calvin Bridges, and. bunch of others. (Then) Sen. Barack Obama was at that taping. Deb sang this song!!
Debbie Henry is PHENOMENAL. I saw this PBS Special when it aired way back in the early 90's, taped it, and me and my buddies watched it over and over again. I ran right out and joined the church choir because of this specific performance by Debbie. Of course, I should probably have asked somebody how to sing :)
i was there i went to that church for years i'm so happy i found it now my childen can see what they mother got to see i was 13 years old now i;m 33years old all i can do is cry it was a wonderful feeling that u i love u and miss Quinn chapel it was a place for us project kid to come and learn about goti love and miss u so much rev.sander this is lessie thank u for every thing i will never for get u or the church or the people
you're right, the first time i saw her was when i went to see patti for the first time; jerry was the opening act and debbie was his suprise. and Lord have mercy, what a surprise. we said "patti got a hard act to follow". and follow she did.
ow you betta sing! yes i can feel it all over me. sing Debbie!!! she can realy sing, ow yes check het out with patti labelle, singin you are my friend! to live with my god
This is a great performance. I first heard this song at the end of my grandmother's funeral. It was sung when they closed her casket and rolled her out of the church.
going home to gospel with patti labelle from the pbs network is truly a diamond. I wish that network released this onto dvd or cd. This whole program is truly annointed.
I remember this rendition. She brought the house down...powerful voice and spirit. Delores Barrett Campbell's proclamation of "Beautiful" at the end sums it up just right.

Those two ladies Debbie hugs at the end, aren't those Patti's aunts? Aunt Hattie Mae & Joshia Mae?
stillrose15 3 years ago
No, she hugs Delores Barret Campbell and Albertina Walker at the end, the two legends to whom she has dedicated this performance.
