  • I was introduced to this song by the late great Bob Collins. :) Happy bday "Uncle Bob)

  • You know, I grew up in Little Rock and loved this song as a kid. I even preformed it in my third grade talent show and it was a big hit with my classmates--because it is funny. Come on Loudon you had one hit song and you made fun of the people that liked it the most. THAT seems to lack intelligence to me.

  • The German Crossed-Arm Society at 1:48

  • Our ukulele gang will be performing this song tonight at an open microphone session!! Gold!!

  • Actually it made it to number 16 in 1973. The germans need to be more alive than that.

  • That crowd sucked, seriously they were like dead haha.

  • brillant, cheers Dave

  • German audience - they won't sing along

    because they believe in Farfromstinkin

  • Wow - haven't heard this for a looooooooooooog time. It was so refershing in the early '70s when there was so very little else to chuckle about going on in the world.

  • One of the most entertaining songwriters of all time. Just recently got really into his work. I'm not disappointed.

  • if only Hitler could see his youth singing along with a American song about squashed skunks,,, he'dsing along a bit and then catch himself and get furor ious

  • Is this song really as old as it is?

  • i was reading the book 'There Will Be Rainbows'. That's how i found out about this song, i wanted to know why it was mentioned so many times!

  • this sure as hell not original i remember this when i was a teen and this band didnt do it

  • @IIVIIorphious

Hate to tell you but you're wrong!

  • Redneck perfume :)

  • I was shocked and surprised to learn Loudon Wainwright the Third has a son named Rufus who sings a fantastic song named "Hallelujah" for the soundtrack of the movie "Shrek"!

  • @twinkie57401 It's a tune by Leonard Cohen. The most famous among the dozens of covers was done by Jeff Buckley, himself the son of a great great singer songwriter . . .

  • @alphadork1 This song was written and performed by

    Loudon Wainwright lll

  • @alphadork1 Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road is NOT a Leonard Cohen tune, and Jeff Buckley never covered it. You're thinking of Hallelujah . . .

  • boo

  • We watched this in class 2day

  • I'm 42 now, but I still remember singing this song as a 5 year old. Damn I'm getting old.

  • @coolahndluke so im i

  • @coolahndluke Oh yeah....I remember my sister trying to play this 45 in the living room and every time she tried, my folx threw a fit. LOL!

  • my history teacher used to sing this to our class.

we all thought he was lying when he said it was an actual song.

    you go, mr. kramer.

  • Never did yeah i like the dog song better.

  • dass heiss "toten stinktier"...eh, germans. not so responsive

  • "totes Stinktier" is correct

  • I thought I recognized him, he's in the two man gentleman band.

  • Didn't Jud Strunk originaly do this song waaay back in the 60's

  • Smells like somebody told another big fat lie about wind energy! P U that STINKS !!!

  • "I should have lookin left, and i should have lookin right!" XD

  • BawHaHaHa! I remember thisa song like yesterday! wow great trip back~

Louden sure knew how to crack us up.

Those of us who got it!

  • Some of the audience looks pretty clueless.

    Maybe he should have sung:

"Tot Skunk mitten in der Straße"

    TOT TOAD FROSCH !

  • what do you expect, theyreGerman.

  • Those Germans sure know how to party, lol

  • Great tune..Germany might not have been the best place in the world to do it,but this song makes me smile everytime I hear it..He looks fab!!!!!

  • Loudo was giving it his all... unreceptive crowd. thanks for sharing though!

  • Wow, he looks so old. Brings back memories; he was on M*A*S*H around '72. Glad this song survives. DEAD TOAD FROG.

  • i jusgt luuv it! :D

  • The audience look like it was their pet skunk that got killed.

  • sound like it too

  • im pretty sure this is more of a comedy club than a concert venue i think thats why he is talking so much

  • He's talking so much because he's in GERMANY, where the Anglo concept of humor doesn't translate easily.

  • good song ruined by his own stupidity. this is painful to watch.

  • so don't watch it. He's just playing up to a tv audience and maybe he's a little nervous. so what? Until you've written a song and tried to put it over on a large audience you really got nothing to share.

  • don't watch it? great response. it's an opinion. look at you rushing to all-knowing judgement status too at the end of the barb. way to go, jon bon jovi.

  • SING THE DAMN SONG...for God's sake. An intro lasting over a minute...

  • lol Well, you got your dead cat and you got your dead dog, on a moon light night, you got your dead toad frog, you got your dead rabbit and your dead racoon, the blood and the guts are gonna make you swoon...

  • what episode, I have them all....I will look it up...nostalgic as always... Chris

  • Gawd I remember this song... reminds me of driving through the back roads of Oklahoma and Texas in the heat of Summer.

  • that was for you Mom

  • My parents taught me this song. I haven't heard it in years but I think of it every time I smell a skunk.

  • I taught it to my daughter too, and now I'm teaching it to my grandkids. Gotta continue the proud tradition of corrupting the world with funny songs.

  • seen him in glasgow last year on my birthday but also his daughter on stage with her mom suzzy roche really made my birthday

  • This is a funny song.

  • Saw him at Liberty Hall in Houston do this circa 1973.... He also did a song explaining why dogs need to sniff other dogs rear ends...very funny

  • cool song way back when, and yes i remember him singing on MASH ,

  • He sang a song about MacArthur in an early M*A*S*H episode too BTW.

  • love to hear that one!

  • This song came out during my senior year in high school and we sang it constantly at parties, on busses, etc. Why did Loudon change the melody in this live version? And I miss the fiddle breaks.

  • this song was written about hillary clinton.

  • I think this was the first or second record that I bought as a kid. I still have the 45 around, but no record player.

  • PHAIL!

  • was this where Bill Clinton was from ?

  • No. He was from Hope, Arkansas.

  • HAHA! Pretty damn cool!

    Love Loudon to death!

  • Now tell me Germans don't have a sense of humour; love the Frauleins too .......

  • was great stoner music back in the 70's

  • Born in '75 to free spirits, I grew up listening to Loudon. I always wanted to hear the "dead skunk" song. This is a timeless one!!

  • This is funny.Loudon is a great singer

  • i LOVED this song!

i am from boise idaho--it was pretty big ther, too!

  • No, Loudon's son Rufus is openly gay.

  • I prefer the 76' Rockpalazt version, if I'd have to chose one, but nice to see someone else up something.
