They switched the names for some reason in the English translation, but that manga was still long before Firered/Leafgreen and Blue/Leaf's official game debut.

Well, not exactly. Ash is just the couterpart of Red and Green(guy) is the couterpart of Gary. The anime characters are just loosely based on these characters. However, their personailties are different, especially as the seasons/sagas pass.

I think that both Dawn and Blue are even in how pretty they are. I love them both, though I prefer Blue's old outfit. I like her new one, but her old one was cooler if you ask me. Either way, I like Blue. Yellow is cool personality-wise, but I never got to see her in "Female form" sorta speak, so I really don't know how she looks later on (I couldn't find anything after when they arrive at the island)

in the original, the main character and main rival were named after the starting games in Japan, which were Pokemon Red and Green. But since the two starting games in the US were Red and Blue, the rival was called Blue, because there was no "Green" game in English yet, not until LeafGreen in 2005 anyway. Blue(the Japanese girl rival) was shown after Pokemon Blue came out in Japan, which was nothing but Pokemon Red and Green with better graphics.
