I believe this is a problem if the numbers are declining. If they are not as the Inuit say. Then they do have every right to hunt these animals. The deciding factor here is clearly the actual truth behind the decline. Hunting when done with care and organizational group IE Ministry of Natural Resources, is a fundamental piece of the conservation of animals. Hunting provides direct taxation funding for conservation by way of tags and license fees. As long as the population is monitored.

Inuits would know, in my area the scientists declared a wolf species extinct back in the 80's when there was still a live population. After 30 years of reports by locals about mountain lions which science said was extinct in my state, it was announced that they had returned to our region, only because someone shot one and carcasses were being found along the roadside because of vehicular strikes. dont know for sure myself. I just work with salmon and understand how management works with those species. I assume theres food. I'm also not sure as to the area of size polar bears roam if they're like cats the area can be quite large where they protect as "theirs". you could be correct. but when I see an animal dumpster diving I first think of over population.

well... polar bears eat seals, seals eat fish and shell fish, if the polar bears are gone then the population of seals goes up. the seals then eat more fish and shellfish causing less fish and shellfish for fisherman to catch. the fisherman are lossing money because of the extra effort they put in to keep up with demand of fish and shellfish. when you go to the grocery store to buy fish and/or shellfish (shrimp, crabs, lobster, etc.) it is going to cost you alot more.

Humans could be far more efficient at curbing seal populations if this was the case. Plus the seals are highly edible and have useful skin, fur, and fat.

To respond to your first sentence, we gain the victory over an adversary. As apex predators, humans and bears compete for resources. Also bears represent a natural threat to humans. Therefore we gain resources and security by eliminating them.

Unless you eat seals and hunt in the same area, polar bears do not compete for resources. The extinction of the polar bear is significant because it is one of the largest organisms on the planet and it lives in a place that is nearly devoid of humans. The only reason it is going extinct is from its habitat disappearing as a direct result of global warming.
