@TheGamernamer I couldn't tell you if they published this particular version, but while you're looking, you might look for Marty Paich's arrangement as it's very similar.
Dave Weckel is a BAD A_ _ drummer! All the musicians here are top notch, but there is only one drummer and they can all ride the waves of his rhythms. If he slips up it would be most noticed and he provides the framework for the rest of the band to work off of, so lets here it for the drummer!
@fastfingers12 YES it is! The King of Kings! No one can match Eddie. Benny Goodman would come out of his grave to jam with Ed. That's a fact.
I 'Played' Clarinet for 12 years, practiced 4 hours a day, and never got anywhere near his playing or skill level. Also love is tenor SAX playing, really beautiful tone.

i'm always amazed by people who are critical of someone else's playing. For anyone who's ever tried to play jazz on clarinet, you know how difficult it is. I've followed Eddie's career since 1986 and i can't tell you what a better player has made me.
@djbot this is donna lee, but it's a contrafact on a tune called (Back Home Again In) Indiana, which means that Parker took the changes from Indiana and wrote a new melody on it.
The guy on the xylophone is AWESOME!!! I used to hate them because my band teacher in high school was/is a douche. But this guy is just too good and I have to respect it and love it as well. And I just LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE how smoothly the horns back up the flutist during his solo from 3:41-3:45. It's just so lovely man. 5 stars!!!!!
@seanwmalone Vibraphone....my bad man, lol. I know what you mean because I play bass and people are like, "Oh you play guitar huh?" I go, "bass.....BASS!!! This has 4 strings not 6." lol But yeah Gary is awesome...I clearly watched his solo over and over until it got better each time. But I'll remember which ones are wood and which aren't haha.
there's no sax solo because that was a kind of benny goodman tribut with the clarinet and vibraphone. Even if charlie parker made this song doesn't mean you have to put a sax solo. They did just great and not just like parker. I think change is good but whatever your opinion
Great piccolo solo by Rangell! He plays it as if he invented the dadburn li'l "mini-flute"!!!
I could never master the thing - feels like I've got 10 thumbs! A big ol' regular flute is like playing a kazoo, in comparison - easy as Tiger w/a nite-time waitress. It's gotta be the tiniest hi-tech musical instrument ever made. (or close to it...)
Great stuff. Burton is transcendental; catch him live at any price, folks. Weckl's groove and mullet are in full splendor -- I wonder if that massive plumage helps him swing so hard.
Gentlemen, we are watching these videos because we love jazz music. Remember that music is subjective like other arts. @Zaachila4 Well, all I can say is when you are not exposed to REAL jazz, sometimes your opinion is limited but not all are limited in their opinion. I like the players. Great playing but really, GRP has always been commercial and cheesy. Kind of a modern Lawerence Welks vibe. That bells player is truly extraordinary. It seems impossible that any human being could possibly do that so well. I bet he's been playing longer than I've been alive!
that is definitely not true! Not to sound like a stickler but Bells are only known to either be the glockenspiel or tubular bells at most! Never heard them referred to anything else. Maybe some hand percussion with bells on them but that is it. A vibraphone is a vibraphone, vibraharp, or just vibes.
Right you are. Bells can be found in orchestras also. (hence: orchestra bells) They are usually 2 octaves with no resonators and played with small steel ball mallets are ones made of hard plastic on a horizontal table. Vibes are completely different.
He didn't say bells he said 'vibes' which is what the instrument is, a vibraphone. The bars are aluminum instead of wood and the tubes have a sort of vibration mechanism that creates vibrato and sustain when needed.

a clean machine wiped with so much disinfectant I want to puke. copied music. Oh wait- they're so clever with that chord sub at 4:13 it makes it like so toatally it worth it!

i read a few comments on other videos saying "do you think music is a sport?" etc. & i think that's not about playing it really fast, because it was meant to be played fast.

Not transposed in the sheet music, transposed in the concert key due to a limited range. Usually, Donna Lee is in Ab, but here the melody is in F.
Actually, the day I discovered that they'd transposed it, I had thought earlier that Donna Lee is probably one of few songs not played in more than one key, just because of the effort it would take to transpose it. Then I hear the recording again, and I realize its not in the right key!
Leave it to Tom Scott, an excellent arranger, to actually have the smarts to put it in F for the piccolo. If in Ab, the picc solo would not be as burnin'. I wouldn't want to attempt the tune on any flute in the key of Ab!

Not all solos are good. Even great musicians do weak solos. It's a matter of taste. We have the right to say or write our opinions or critic as we like. My opinion is that Nelson Rangell has serious picolo chops. But I think his solo on that particular song could have been better.

Not all solos are good. Even great musicians do weak solos. It's a matter of taste. We have the right to say or write our opinions or critic as we like. My opinion is that Nelson Rangell has serious picolo chops. But I think his solo on that particular song could have been better.
