There's no such thing as a 'British' justice system. Scottish law has and will always be a seperate justice system from England. And it should be noted that Gerry Conlon and the others as citizens of Northern Ireland are also British...just keeping the facts straight.
I'm British and the Northern Ireland situation makes me ashamed to be so. Got huge respect for the people of Northern Ireland and the shit that we put you through. A lot of people dont agree with me over here but you lot are strong.
@shanefolan - yeah a "tiny minority", right. Cop yourself on, I remember these times, do you? This has been going on for hundreds of years. This film was set amid decades of rule of the tory/conservative/unionist party in Britain, who were notoriously hardlined against the Irish and Northern Ireland, and were by necessity voted in by majority. But no it wasn't "all Brits" and the conflict was never supposed to be about the general English civilian, though it inevitably spilled over into that.
I was in Birmingham when the bomb went off, there was alot of anti Irish racism about. My first experience of such "HATRED" was when i saw a b&b with a sign in the window which read -NO BLACKS-NO DOGS-NO IRISH.What this film depict's is"TRUE" the goverment had to be seen to be winning the war against the IRA.So the police "MUST"arrest and "CHARGE" Irish people-"ANY IRISH PEOPLE" will do.Justice done on "FABRICATED EVIDANCE"is "ALWAYS WRONG".As a piece of cinematic storytelling it's excellent.
All though Daniel is a genius and no doubt one of the greatest actors of all time, and he gave an amazing portrayal of Conlon in this film, I would have to say the true gem was the man who play Giusepe (I am a terrible speller). I have to say his interaction with Day- Lewis' carachter was the magic of the movie. The ending is by far one of the most profound and powerful scenes in cinema history. He lost his father to a cause he did not do a cause rooted in prejudice and hate. We need to think.
I watched this..a black British girl now living somewhere in the Caribbean... This movie touched my very soul and I was in tears through most of it...All I know is that there is something wrong with a system that allows 12 people to decide the fate of very precious, sometimes innocent lives. Never thought I could feel this kind of pain for people I no nothing about.

This is the first time that I´ve watched this in english and its true that it made me weep tears of grief and tears of rage. The British judiciary system is said to be the best in the world.....
Except of course if You happen to be IRISH.
The Guilford four and the Birmingham six are the best known cases of vile injustice dealt out during the dark days of the "Troubles" but there are indeed more innocent victims of manipulated evidence whose voices will never be heard. thanks for the upload.
Daniel Day Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite. Doesn't get much better. Tragic story, excellent film. The idea of being put in prison for a crime you didn't commit... I can't get close to comprehending what it must be like.
To all the people that enjoyed watching this film and who read these comments, you should check out the vids of Gerry Conlon and Paul Hill here on you tube who are still today trying to come to terms with what happened and who are still actively giving talks upon invitation to people and groups, and are trying to support people who have been falsely charged for crimes they did not commit, by British governments and people in power, worldwide. @romeofightback Nothing happened to the police. You need to know when it comes to the Irish in Briitish courts justice is two words Just Us and screw the Irish. Forever we have been and will be the butt of their jokes and 2nd class citizens. Even though the Irish in England make more money on average than the English they are looked down on.
@rapier0954 I seem to remember that one of the victims was english. I also seem to remember other english victims of miscarriages of justice. For your information irish people are very well liked in england. From reading your bitter hate-filled comments I don't suppose you know many english people.
@jonoessex You miss my point. Common people have always gotten along. The British gov and justice system is the problem. In the case of the latter the Irish are welcome if they dig the canals, lay the railroads and clean up shit but it they demand decent housing and rights they get back shot by the SAS as happened on Bloody Sunday. Britain is a class society and if you forget it, Me Lord or Lady whichever you are,the Irish will be the first to remind you of that fact.
@rapier0954 Bloody Sunday? You mean that fateful day when McGuinness opened up on the paras? Typically irish, always asking for the shit to hit them. Just like that stupid King of Leinster who begged the English to intervene on his behalf so he could regain power in Ireland. XD
@rapartist43 Your own gov apologized after investigating this to death and concluding that the paras did not fire on anyone and were not involved. the fact you continue to propagate this myth is just to balm your conscience. it not the first gunning down of innocent civilians by British troops they did in India in 1947 and numerous other countries.of the Empire. Next you'll be saying the British Empire was merely a charitable organization. Try reading the official report!!!
@rapier0954 balm my conscience? Boy, I ain't even thirty yrs old. :-D Never been to Ulster also :-D What conscience? You have your "truth" and that's that. Of course, McGuinness won't admit it. And you won't either. :-)
@rapartist43 I'm 57 years old and Protestant. I read the report and know people who were there when the shots were fired. It was a march protesting the gerrymandering in Londonderry that saw us get the most council seats in a city with a Catholic majority among other things etc. You haven't read the gov the report or been to Ulster nor do you know what you are talking about. Typical English arrogance and ignorance all in one.The IRA was not stupid enough to get involved.

@rapartist43 I'm Protestant have read the gov report. Plainly you do not know what you are talking about. The IRA would not be stupid enough to get involved in this affair because it would not have been to their advantage. You've never been to Ulster, you have never studied the gov report and clearly don't know what you are talking about. Typical English ignorance and arrogance all in one person.
@rapier0954 Not to their advantage??? WTF? Bloody Sunday changed the whole conflict even until today, you stupid retard. I don't care if you're protestant as you are obviously more Irish than anything else. And I am neither arrogant nor ignorant.

@rapartist43 Jaysus clutching at straws are we? You're talking about something that happened in 1169 but I suppose it proves something, the English do sometimes over extend their welcome! And anyone with an ounce of integrity, or more to the point brains, understands Bloody Sunday was a miscarriage of justice of extreme proportions. Another cover up by the judicial system which saw murderer's get away scot free. I'm guessing Cameron's apology is to be misconstrued in some way?
5*movie has everything about wth is happening to this day. The struggle of ordinary people taking the fall for the security of the wealthy, and the breaking of homes by the hands of our own "security". It also depicts how war can/will affect everyone by devide and conquer. It is currently legal in the US, so idk cuz this movie is old. Great upload!
Thank you for posting this amazing movie. For me this is Daniel Day-Lewis' best performance of all his amazing career. The interrogation scene is absolutely breathtaking!
passing in this case and laughing my bollox off at the scumbag for what he did he locked up a poor woman annie mguire and her 2 sons her husband a father and u got the lifeblood of poor carole richardson and made gerry stay in prison for a crime he didnt committ along with paul hill who,s life is in turmoil to this very day he barley gets an hours sleep every nite and lastly but not leastly u caused the death of poor mr gesep conlon shame on u mr dixon. i hope u rot in hell for what u did
i noticed a very big flaw in this case how come when the defence barristor says you squeezed mr conlons testicles and dixon says i never even spoke to mr. conlon but a minute later in the film the prosecuter says you told inspector dixon that you comitted a robbery on that night. thats a major condridictory there i cant help but to wonder aload why mr. dixon wasnt pulled up there and then for treasen to the crown a crime that carrys life imprisonment to which i would have no difficulty in
see dis film best film in the fuken world man i watch it every day not the whole film but pieces here and there and always the end scene were they get released total gold......the case is herby dismissed. in the matter of her majesy versus paul hill the case is hereby dismissed... total surrealism i get butterflys every time brilliant and the actress who plays miss pierce i love her speech in court but mainly the line and you got the lifeblood of carole richardson............
Rest in Peace Giuseppe Conlon and my sympathies to the Guild-ford Four that were wrongly accused of murder. Plus to the I.R.A. Keep up your fight against the British. And to the British government Get the Hell out of Northern Ireland
@The1947partition Trust some twat to make a political statement. All parties involved were ultimate losers. Not only those falsely imprisoned but the families and the loved ones of all the victims who died or those that were horribly maimed by those disgusting bombing. Fuck off back under your stone, gob shite!!!
@mama3183 Yeah its an assault upon us all by the ruling class and very sadly it continues. Whilst the people of northern island might have a way forward the rest of us in the UK still suffer an autocratic royal family and associated entrenched political elite who think nothing of enslaving people and controlling our lives to feed their greed and that of their cronies.
Oh my.....I have been looking everywhere for this movie. I saw it when it first came out but haven't been able to find it anywhere for sale. I even tried online. Thank you so very much for the upload.
i love you i love you i love you!!!! thanks so much for posting, i could only get this on video cassette and it was that worn it wouldnt play anymore.
this is such an amazing movie. It's sickening that those police men knew that the Guildford 4 were innocent yet they left those poor people in jail for 15 years just to cover their own asses. Heartless bastards! And they were never charged though really they wasted the younger years of those people's lives for nothing, traumatised them permanently and have the blood of Giuseppe Conlon on their hands. The Maguires lives were ruined too...for nothing! It makes me sick!
it should be illegal to have a movie this good on youtube....DDL just gold....OH YEA PPL CHECK OUT MY MOVIE IM IN ON MY PAGE UPLAODED IT GIVE ME FEEDBACK PLZZZ IM AN UP AND COMMING ACTOR AND I WOULD LOVE SOME CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIQUES!!!! THANK YOU
that dixon guy at 2:03:47 didnt know what hit him he got caught out haha big time serves him right love to give him a punch dixon got his come uppence
Thanks for putting up this movie. I can't figure out why we never hear about it nowadays - it got a bunch of Oscar nominations. I guess the subject matter is too controversial. Thank God my grandparents were able to get out of Ireland because from the stories they told the British were pretty awful in the 1800s there too.
REALLY a most excellant, outstanding movie! Very well done, effectively portraying the underlying attitudes of the State police, investigators & prosecutors that rationalized the use of intimidation, coercion, bullying, physical & emotional abuse, evidence-tampering etc. in order to indict and condemn SOMEONE for a bombing. Undescores how self-serving, venal and hypocritical the English System of justice is, esp when it comes to covering its own ass.
the british court system and the british police should be ashamed of them selves the the special act the police had corrupted them big to protect the power and the reputation the British courts and the police had treated the so called terrorists they never were innocent the methods the police had that night was a disgrace the police who ever was working should be in jail
The damn british police and government is corrupt when it comes to cases like this that they wouldnt care if the acuused was actaully innocent for they wanted them to rot in prison. my sympathies to the guildford four and the maguire seven. may you rest in peace gisueppe conlon

passing in this case and laughing my bollox off at the scumbag for what he did he locked up a poor woman annie mguire and her 2 sons her husband a father and u got the lifeblood of poor carole richardson and made gerry stay in prison for a crime he didnt committ along with paul hill who,s life is in turmoil to this very day he barley gets an hours sleep every nite and lastly but not leastly u caused the death of poor mr gesep conlon shame on u mr dixon. i hope u rot in hell for what u did

i noticed a very big flaw in this case how come when the defence barristor says you squeezed mr conlons testicles and dixon says i never even spoke to mr. conlon but a minute later in the film the prosecuter says you told inspector dixon that you comitted a robbery on that night. thats a major condridictory there i cant help but to wonder aload why mr. dixon wasnt pulled up there and then for treasen to the crown a crime that carrys life imprisonment to which i would have no difficulty in

see dis film best film in the fuken world man i watch it every day not the whole film but pieces here and there and always the end scene were they get released total gold......the case is herby dismissed. in the matter of her majesy versus paul hill the case is hereby dismissed... total surrealism i get butterflys every time brilliant and the actress who plays miss pierce i love her speech in court but mainly the line and you got the lifeblood of carole richardson............

Wait, why did the police suspect and set up Gerry and friends in the first place?
just because he was a hooligan? Why didn't the police try to go after the real perpetrators?
sorry if that sounds dumb, but I must've missed it. I'm not familiar with any Irish history (basically. I know what the IRA was)
TaffyRaphie 3 months ago
@TaffyRaphie I believe it's because that guy that didn't like them at the hippy house went and talked to the police.

Thanks so much for sharing this hun..
It's scary to think what your own goverment can do to their own people.. just because they want to.. and get away with it.. and even murder..
mama3183 3 months ago
@mama3183 Yeah its an assault upon us all by the ruling class and very sadly it continues. Whilst the people of northern island might have a way forward the rest of us in the UK still suffer an autocratic royal family and associated entrenched political elite who think nothing of enslaving people and controlling our lives to feed their greed and that of their cronies.

this is such an amazing movie.
