This was an excellent presentation. I rarely see interesting articles like these anymore and well thought out, without the need of rage, ignorance and controversy.
You said it clear, well mannered and told people the REAL truth. If only companies could see it for themselves.
you got it right. now we have hulu and netflix online, with paid subscriptions and even free versions. all the top shows are online now too, south park, the office, etc. advertising isn't exactly how you predicted it (yet), but the ads are now on the site where you stream or in between each episode. even youtube has ads on some videos now.
ingenious! finally a voice of reason. this is the first viable model i have seen, so far, that can serve the needs of the audience and the producers and the advertisers. it also makes quality matter more than marketing, as you can choose what, when and how to watch. opens up competition too.
Great! I cannot believe how few views this gets and how few people attended this um...seminar or what do you call it. Downloaded the book. Will read. Will tell friends. =D
He completely Forgot the concept of the ads on the site the download is made. legalising makes it go times 100. Thats profit!!!! very big ting to miss!!! but stil ads inside would be a good idea.
And they will still sell CD's and movies. Because its something material. Its a pice of the art. fans and interested people want it. just like a copy of munch's mona lisa. Not because of high definition. That is totaly wrong in the consept that high definition already is available online today.
it's a good idea! another fact is that consumer are changing into producer.. the quality might not be high but there will be a lot to choose from.. so there is only 2 things advertiser and consumer that is capable of producing too.
OK, watched through the whole thing, and I like the fact that you are promoting this "new thinking", but how can we be sure it´ll work? I am an aspiring filmmaker in the age group you are describing and I do locate content I do not otherwise have access to through the internet, but I always have the feeling I am harming my own future career by doing so..:P
if your going to be making afilm for cinema , the way to do it is to release a small chapter that introduces the film , a bit like a trailer but with slightly more length , then blog to everyone and advertise it , when they see the chapter to your film , direct them using a link to the premeires of were that film is going to be released in theaters , once that is done then release it fully on p2p instead of paying lots of money for a dvd distrubutor ,
Hey Jmm! - I follow you up to the point where you say I should go directly to p2p instead of distributors. In fact, that´s part of the money, distributors pay producers for the right to distribute the film on DVD. Not the other way around. Not sure if I misunderstood you, but the last part in the chain seems to where the problem is..?
1) Nocktune06: You as a producer will get paid by distrobutor_s_ the same way as of today, only that instead of earning money from selling DVDs and DVD-covers to the end user, the distrobutor_s_ will earn money from advertisers who is paying to fill the grey holes in your movie that you leave in some of the frames. Pretty simple idea the whole thing I think. Listen to me, grey holes is my invention, and it demotivates hacks that removes them.
2) These grey holes will be filled by ads by local firms, by the player and reach the device while downloading such that an ad is not correlated to your movie, but to the time and location the watcher is and his profile which includes data that say something about what this watcher would be interested to buy.
There are no guarantees anywhere. All we can do is look at the behavior of the hundreds of millions of users. That is your audience, and this is how you reach them.
with torrent ,not only can producers find a greater rate of distrubution , but consumers can also become producers themselves , even if it is just a remix of a song , film someone else produced ,the consumers by remixing or creating their own programs are increasing the awareness and interest in the producers work , it is a win situation , and there will be more interest in the content rather the sale price ,
thanks , check out the film Steal This Film Part 2 , if you haven't yet , it is produced with torrent in mind , by peers for peers , by the league of noble peers , it is also on google video if you want to check it out , it explains more about file sharing as it is now and features the creators of pirate bay
This confirms what I've believed in for the last couple of years, and I'm glad to see that people are working on adjusting to this, rather than abolishing global distribution.
I'm in the target audience, 23 years old, technically savvy, with a broad range of tastes in genre. And I don't watch tv.
I demand my entertainment through my computer, it doesn't have to be streamed, in fact I preffer a torrent, and it's common between my friends, and at my work that this is how things work.
yep and dont think your unique, most teenager are a clone of you, including me. But i dont want no huge ass commercial bullshit in my videos that pisses me off, if i can download episodes of any series and choote between a commercial fucktard episode and a normal pure one, im gonna choose the one without.
Yep. Though at the time I gave this talk - two and a half years ago - it wasn't true. But adult swim realizes they need to keep up with their audience, or they'll lose out.
This is a really well thought out and informative use of the bittorrent technology, unfortunately I think that the big studios are earning far too much money for them to invest much money into this idea as they're already 'invested' in current forms of broadcast distribution.
That doesn't matter. The longer they refuse to change the business model, the more salient the peer-produced content becomes. They're already drowning, but they don't really know what to do about it. So let them carry on. It won't really matter.
Thanks for the upload mate, it was an extremely informative presentation and seeing as High Definition TV is becoming the norm in Australia, it was even more appropriate. My first cousin is a producer of interactive TV (Quizmania until it was taken off the air) working with Fremantle Media.
I have to admit i do use bittorrent to get shows because Australian television is usually months behind the US but its changing. There are new ads promoting popular shows claiming 'streamed from the US'
Very well, good job to the dude that created this concept, and if the concept doesnt work who cares this "problem" will mostly affect America so fuck it ill use bitorrent until i die
Doesn't long term success depend entirely on a virtually unending supply of bandwidth and complete willingness of audience to continue paying for it regardless of cost? If either becomes a hindrance, what then? There will be great incentive for broadband providers to raise their prices if demand for service increases. There are inequalities of service as well since even now some providers have oversold their capacity-struggling to meet present demands of service.
very good point, but if you notice that the vast majority of people are generally, to be blunt, far too dumb or lazy to actually look for free content outlets, so they will eventually move to this model while me the rest of us geeks will continue to get it for free :)
How recent this video actually is? Wondering because there were mention about Google video as a new thing... well, it's been there quite a while now, nothing new there... also, no mention about youtube and other flash video sites around (20+ and counting). Also no mention about Joost and similar services (p2ptv). So this visio is good but needs to be updated...
This was shot on 7 May 2005, just about 2 years ago now, when Google Video was new, and no one was really using YouTube as yet (though it did exist). Long, long before Joost.
I really appreciate the clarity of your ideas here. I agree with you wholehartedly. There are fundamental changes to viewers consumption patterns happening right now and I find it curious that so few producers are realizing this. It seems to me that this is a perfect model for programs like Arrested Development become pioneers in. The more direct connection between producer and advertiser and audience could usher in an exciting new phase of television production.
Hahah! Actually a fair number of people have seen this video - either on the torrent, or here on YouTube. In Australia I'm fairly well known for it, and have been interviewed for radio, etc. Probably only in the US is this work unknown -- which is funny, given that I'm American...
I'm American, I've watched this, and it's great. This is the first time I've heard someone actually proposing a solution to "illegal downloading". If producers distributed their work freely, people wouldn't have to resort to an unlicensed source and end up feeling like a common criminal. I plan on showing this to my college professor who's firmly against piracy.
Excellent. Many thanks! The more folks who start thinking about this as a series of opportunities instead of a series of problems, the better for everyone...
Especially part 5 was good about the big americans screaming bloody murder because they thought the blip was more than a blip..

This was an excellent video. Well done. The best part was the quote: "If you are a tv producer and cannot figure out how to turn viewers into money,
then you should not be producing television.".
I don't hear WOW worrying about piracy.
Thanks for posting this!!!

I'd prefer no commercials at all as well, even the subconcious ones. But this is not realistic, there has to be some kind of income..
