I dare say that black stations are just as racist as any white station then as now - nothing seems to have changed somehow. I was 11 or 12 years old when I first heard Gary US Bonds and I was dancing with a girl in a poodle skirt !!! This was an all white school in Utah. I knew that a lot of our popular music was by black artists and I didn't care ... I am not prejudiced. In England the prejudice is class prejudice and kids from Liverpool experienced it. Accent in language was the tip-off.
It was 1965. I was 6. Mom opened a music store called Figaro's. Gary was at the Grand Opening. We used to go & watch him perform and hang out in his dressing room. one day I woke up and saw a black lady on the couch. I ran to tell my brothers. When Mom woke up. We called her in our room. Mom, there is a black lady sleeping on the couch! Mom said, that's Gary's mother. We said, but Mom! She's black! Mom just laughed...Gary's black too. We were shocked. She became my nanny for several years after.
Gary is from Norfolk, VA. I remember one Easter he hung my hat up on a pole and my mom went to his house and he had to apologize. My where has the years gone. The last time I saw him was in New Jersey perfoming at this hotel. He was so fine as a young man.
Gary says the public didn't know he was black until 1962. I don´t know about that...I saw him doing "Quarter to Three" on "Bandstand" in mid-1961 and he sure didn't look white to me! That song was such a smash that the kids in the Bandstand audience insisted that he sing it twice! I never saw that happen before, the guy was a sensation.
hey i watched this program. I was in aww because me and John had alot of the same likes scary. I was wondering if someone could tell me where i could get a copy of the show. thank you guys this stuff is gold
sadly majority of the ut contributors from usa can't even write, but I will say being one who knows and head is big that this garry us bonds is one of the most influencial contributors to 60s rock n roll! super stuff of such high quality.
Gary US Bonds is so underrated it's not even funny. I didn't even hear "Quarter to Three" untill two or three years ago on a compliation CD. They need to play him on the radio more often.
Lot's of producers don't want him to be knowen, purely because people like Phil Spector, George Martin, and Brian Wilson skanked a lot of Frank Guida's production.

I got news for Gary US Bonds, the radio stations are back to that white/ black format.
Although his music wouldn't make it on the black stations now.

I don' think he meant to mislead anyone, just make the point and it goes without saying memory is far from perfect

Can anyone upload the versin on this vid of quarter to three? The other one is so poor quality. I would apriciate it a lot.
I also wonder if there is a remastered version of the quarter to three-record? It is also of poor quality unfortionately.
GARY ROCKS!!! Cant believe i didn't hear of him until recently.
