Freedom isn't the bane of hospitals, armies, electricity, or music. If you allow your citizens to do what they want (within reason), your country's infrastructure isn't going to magically crumble to the ground. For the most part, America is free, but the government is still interfering with certain aspects of the citizens' lives (the Patriot Act or the FCC's censorship, for example).

And on a side note, I'm sure they'd be overjoyed about a country that doesn't have an army.

Actually, yes, I do think they're good people. They oppose war and violence and they make sure people are skeptical of the government. A skeptical, critical public is much harder for a government to walk all over than a blindly patriotic public.
