Ok good news. I found a version of Alps Pointing Device that works. It's for a different model Vaio with WIndows 7 but it's working with my VGN-NR180E as well. Since YouTube won't allow me to post the link so I'll just inbox it to you.Now I'll start looking for the drivers for S1and AV Mode
@DarkAdonis123 Thanks for the touchpad driver! It worked out great! I'll have to do some searching for the SD card reader. I used the S1 button as a mute button before, but it isn't that huge of a deal. It's annoying that Sony doesn't update their own drivers to work with their computers!
I've had this laptop for almost 3 years. It has been an amazing laptop to me. I upgraded the ram to 4GB, Installed Windows 7 64 bit, and just recently upgraded the HD to 500 GB. I continue to be happy with this laptop. I would buy another Vaio in the future without hesitation.
@DarkAdonis123 Were you able to get the S1 and AV mode buttons working after upgrading to Windows 7? I also couldn't get scrolling working on the touchpad with Windows 7. I never got the SD card slot working either. It didn't seem like the Vista drivers worked or the updated ones for Windows 7.
@jschmitz23 Believe it or not, I've never used the S1 or AV mode =) The official vaio site doesn't seem to support the device with Windows 7 drivers. But with a little patience and a lot of googling I'm sure you can find some. The driver I installed for my card slots was meant for a Vista Gateway laptop but some how worked on my Vaio after I installed Windows 7. Some compatible drivers are definitely harder to find than others.
I found this model face-down in the dump, snagged it, replaced the LCD screen and harddrive...... good as new -- for $150..... Sony retails it at $850, booya!

We didn't pay that much, but now there is an updated version called the Sony Vaio NS and it starts around $799 which look similar but have a webcam. You can watch the ads and I'm sure you'll see one for a couple hundred off.

They also flipped the CD/DVD drive to the other side and put the ports that were on that side to the other side. The front looks a little different too and they rounded the edges more. it doesn't feel cheep at all. if you saw the review from Cnet they said that it felt cheep but it really doesn't at all. I kinda like the texture, makes it more interesting to look at.

I would have no idea since I don't have any games except ones from 1998, and all of those would work perfectly. But I'm pretty sure you need a higher end computer to get good gaming out of it.
I bought vaio FZ with NVIDIA 8400M GT and i downloaded the latest driver frm the net to play Mass Effect and i can run it without any problem but its not a good idea to play the game with high graphics on it, it'll make the gameplay slow/lagging, u hv to lower the graphic res to play it smooth, it doesn't hv to be to low, same goes with assassin creed, if only they gave the latest NVIDIA gamecard on it would be cool, to bad though, oh mined comes with 4BGram and 200HD
ah i have the slighty older version of tht laptop VGN-NR11M and it has pretty much the same specs except 160Gb HD and it gets bloody even just its just sitting there...

You should get a sony vaio TZ series, as it's much smaller, thinner, practable & just better in every way than the macbook air, so dont let anyone fool you. also the sony vaio tz starts from £1200 whereas macbook air £1800 or more

I can't stand the screens on the NR series. All the colours invert as you move your head while looking at it. It's like you have to sit in the center to see a clear picture. Also it sucks with reproducing blacks, they look gray ! Toshiba screens all the way!
Mine doesn't do that... maybe it was a bad screen? The blacks look fine on mine too, not like oh my gosh that's black black! black, but it doesn't look gray.
I don't own one. I had bought one and returned it, basically I couldn't stand using it for more than 10 minutes. Maybe it is because I'm too adapted with my toshiba laptop (a200). Its definetely not as bright but at least I do not get any kind of variability or inverting of colour shades when i move around.
Today I saw the floor model with my friend at Best Buy and he too really didn't like it for the same reason and not knowing I had baught one.(we both are toshiba owners) But it very sexy

im looking at getting the VAIO VGN-NR285E/SC. is that a good choice for a laptop. it looks similar to yours except it dosnt have the centrino processor it has the T5450 processor @ 1.66ghz 2m L2cache and 2gig ram upgradable to 4. otherwise it looks identical. how do they heat up. do they seem reliable or are they flimsy. do they get hot or stay cool?

Well yeah, it's a little slow, but it seems faster than my desktop. I'm planning on some day upgrading it to 2 GB of RAM, which wouldn't make it "old" just now. That's why computers are upgradable.

I've had this laptop for almost 3 years. It has been an amazing laptop to me. I upgraded the ram to 4GB, Installed Windows 7 64 bit, and just recently upgraded the HD to 500 GB. I continue to be happy with this laptop. I would buy another Vaio in the future without hesitation.

the NR doesnt get hot at the bottom at all but only on the top right side of the notebook is where the heat is released. Doesnt bother.

1.6 aint much against 2 ghz or higher but for me it does the job since i only use my pc to do photoshop for my Sprite Savior series. I hate Vista tho
