About thirty five years ago Brian Rust used to host a show on Sunday evenings on Capitol Radio in London. This recording was voted the second hottest record of all time, only beaten by King Oliver with Wa Wa WA. It is still one of my all time favourites. Thanks for posting it. Susie
Ya know,it's funny to note that the "Jazz Historians" talk about Gene Krupa being the first jazz drummer to record using the bass drum in 1927 but it sure sounds like Abe is pounding away on one - and this was recorded in early 1926 (or was it 1925?) I think the historians need to take another look at this.
It's also an early example of a recording using a string bass rather that just a tuba which would be all that you would of heard a couple years before this recording here.
A-MEN!!! JCJasion. A Lot Of These Early HOT Tunes Inspired A Lot Of 50s. The Term ROCK & ROLL It Self Did Not Start In The 1950s As Most People Would Asume. (ie) Songs Like " My Daddy Rocks Me With One Steady Roll" (Jimmy Noons Orchestra.) 1929. As Well As Others. Prozoot , April 3 Was My Birthday And What A TREET It Is To Find This Awsome Post!! Thanks.
There is another posting of this on YouTube with comments by the poster as to how this music actually reminded him of early Rock of the 1950's. Listening to the slapped bass and the rhythmic groove underpinning this recording, it's hard to imagine people NOT wanting to get up and shake their asses out on the dance floor! :-)
Is this ever GOOD! Would one Charleston to this, or Black Bottom?
