But how come the Forester always has a little issue with the snow? I seen many vids on Youtube where the Forester has just a little trouble with the snow. But the 2011 Legacy and Outback seem to eat the snow.
the point of saying the engines were cold is its terrible to put stress on a cold engine as the internals actually expand and seal more properly once they reach optimal temp and also you have to give the parts time to become lubed. =]
I live on the Idaho/Jackson wyoming border. I bought an 02 ford explorer a few years ago, and it KICKS ASS on the highway in the winter, whether its ice, snow, slush, whatever...just cruises like its pavement. Even off road in deep snow, as long as I have momentum. But when I park it at night, and then it snows a foot or two by morning. . that mutha gets stuck right where I had parked it. Drives me Insane...LOL i love the thing but POS!
Forester driver - good effort, just need a bit more experience with the rocking momentum. Also, winter tires would have made that a 1-2 push. :) I've got a slightly lowered impreza wagon but our Winnipeg winters have snow about that deep all over the place.
I guarantee you if the traction control got shut off on the forester, it would have plowed through first time no problem. Also snow tires are a massive help
I've owned alot of cars, (family does auto body) and the subarus are the ones I own the longest. They really are well made cars. I can drive right by people who are in 4x4 trucks and they're still stuck, and I'm smiling and waving at them, lmao. Sure I offer to help, I make nice ruts for them to get out with :p
he would have still gotten out, because the traction control only brakes individual wheels when mechanical differentials fails to deliver enough power to the wheel with least traction. 05 forrester with the same drivetrain didnt even have traction control. Subaru awd is mainly mechanical and does not rely on computers to detect and send power like most awd systems out there.
@sga86 *Cough* Quattro ftw ... ahem tis mighty cold out lol.
an easy way to overcome those silly traction control awd systems is to hold teh brake lightly while trying to get out of a bad situation, this puts pressure on all wheels tricking the TCS so giving power to all four wheels. also works with mechanical awd too.
this is kind of a usless demonstration. we got 22 inches of snow this one winter storm where i live, my STi (with snow tires of course) plowed right through it, even though it was well higher than the bumper :)
Impreza looked like he broke through easier and with more 4wd then just rocking the forester back and forth (like a granny at church bingo!) Maybe it was the driver...Does the Forester driver's license refer to CRACKER JACKS anywhere?
I plowed through a whole lot more of snow this winter in a VW T4 syncro. It would have eaten that tiny pile o snow for breakfast :D
btw. you have to rock your car forwrds/bckwrds with the cluth, or with D/N on the gear lever of your hilarious automatics, rapidly, in order to get out of snowpiles
I run toyo observes on my 90 legacy wagon and it would eat through that pile and the pavement beneath it as well. oh and I wouldnt be stuck any longer, lol!
Read the stat on how "Subbys" are made. Symmetrical, horizontally opposed, torque distribution ...learn WHY they are that way and you'll be more impressed.
Did we both watch the same video? You know, the one that announced the cars in the beginning? IMPREZA. It's an IMPREZA. If you can't keep up with the rest of the class, it's best not to raise your hand.
now.. if you could please learn to drive that forester, you should be able to at least tie the 2.5 rs. . . seriously you dont just ease it into it you go balls out.

U'r kidding me guys....I could run over that snow pile with my RWD LADA 1.2 if u'r really that cool go out do some off roading in snow then show it and forget the parking .....loooooooooooosers :d
Its hard to judge how hard this is.. I know I have gone out of deeper snow than this, but this looked much more densely packed than what our schools plows leave behind our cars. I have also gotten nearly stuck (took lots of rocking) in less snow than this. Stock tires are junk on the forester.
@fenix144 Generally, there aren't laws concerning winter tires. There are certain roads and local ordinances that require people to have tire chains and/or possibly snow tires in high mountain areas in the west in wintery conditions, but for the most part snow tires are not mandatory.
Don't you just love the snow in testing our vehicles. I plowed to the same pile up on my cx-7 same result. Worst thing that ever happened to me is skidding on a 180, black-ice at 0-5 mph on a packed cars parking lot...whew! It stopped spinning eventually.
its interesting actually. Due to the shape of the forester, it lifts its wheels off the ground reducing traction. The impreza is lower and doesn't curve as much ad the back so it isn't trying to lift itself. This is perhaps a bad quality of the new foresters?
Seeing that vid made me wish I still owned my '02 Outback soooooo bad! When it comes to fun in the snow, Subarus are the only way to go. Comfortable, compact enough to whip around, decent ground clearance, and of course, symmetrical full-time AWD
i thought about sellin my impreza coupe, but we just got a foot of snow today, and i realized once again why i bought my subaru in the first place. :)
I think the rs being lower to the ground in this case may have helped it since it acted more like a snow plow where as the forrester was losing traction because the back was lifting off the ground enough to unload the suspension. Attach a big snow plow to the back of the forrester ;-)
Hmm weird, the forrester shouldn't have that much trouble going through that little bit of snow. I noticed that the wheels kept stopping and then spinning again. Did you disable traction control? Doesn't seem like you did.
those outbacks are much better than foresters.
