John Kay was indeed from East Germany. When he was 13 he came to Canada where he learned english, rose from the ashes left after World War 2, what a success story for this man!
John Kay and Steppenwolf put in 40 years as a band and then stepped aside in '06. While I miss them and grew up on the music, I certainly can appreciate John wanting to retire and enjoy his life in comfort. The first seven albums the 'Wolf put out were classics. The first two and Monsters being my favs. I never saw a bad Steppenwolf performance and that spanned 30 years. They should be in the Rock'n'Roll HoF. None better.
John Kay(lead singer/guitarist) he owns the rights to the name "Steppenwolf", and 1 or 2 other guys from the orginal band are still in the band now. I think a few other guys are new in it , I think.
my first favorite band. took 2 hits of speed ,drove 2 hrs to see them in charlotte one night, parking lot was empty. it was wrong night, ever done that shit
It is John Kay. The band IS Steppenwolf. John owns the rights to the band name. Just because he doesn't have his mustache here he looks different. Same guy, same guitar, same key. Same great song.
Cool. I went to see them live at the Seminole Casino in Immokalee Florida this past Saturday. They were very good. Had been 41 years since I first saw them in '68.
I saw JOHN KAY and the band back in 1982 at LOWERY AIR FORCE BASE Airman's club. YOU CAN BET "The Pusher" wasn't played that night. Air Force Bases aren't bastions of free speech~just PROTECTORS of free speech! This band IS John Kay and he's missing here!
There is a live album with The Pusher on it. It is not current, and is also not Steppenwolf Live from 1970. The Pusher(1968) is on this live album from 1970, but it isn't the version I am looking for. The one I would like to find contains The Pusher which takes up the whole side of the album. At first, all of the members were making sounds independent from the other members-all were on acid and it sounds it.They then break in with that unforgettable chord & lead, and play the song out. NE1?
Could be on the album 'Early Steppenwolf' which i believe was recorded when they were still The Sparrow. I haven't Wikied so don't slaughter me if I'm wrong- only trying to help.
Man , Steppenwolf needs to come back , sitting in Texas Cafe NYC late 70s thought they were on the jute box , then looked up and there they were . Such a huge band playing small clubs , don't get it . They were huge and hip in the late '60s early '70s with a great sound .
Then saw them in another small joint in Texas . John Kay needs to get the originals and tour . Put out some new music , its time now . They are Great !
A little question, why didn't you have put the WHOLE number on Internet? Now, there is missing the last 30-40 seconds, which have made the number complete!
Damn right my friend Steppenwolf might not have the biggest repertoire but in terms of substance they are the top Rock group because of the Pusher and Power Play by telling it how it (ie a lot of balls) Free's Mr Big is a cousin
hey these guys are retiring this year and a detroit band exit is taking over the biker thing...so billy go to youtubes eddiecooper369 to ck them out......later dude..
i got in trouble for singing this song in the front yard when i was a kid.we lived across the street from a convent and i was going to catholic school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A moment in rock history captured. I cut him if if he stands shoot em if he runs. I get em with my bible and my razor and my gun! God damn on the pusher
It sounds to me like "I'd kill 'em with my bible and I'D RAISE THE RENT". I know it doesn't make much sense. What good what it do to raise the rent on a man you just killed? Still, that's what I've been thinkin' all this time. Guess I'll have to give it another listen...
It was my first real album, around 12 or 13, Got it from a cousin and wore the groved out of it. I can find anything I listened to, as a kid, on youtube. Its great.

man, he's the ex/blackpanther/aryannation/cia/kgb/drugdealin/pushingmethspeedcrackcocainealcohol pusher versus Adolf Hitler, i guess~~elect ron paul!
The lead was always John Kay. He should have hung it up a long time ago. Thanks for posting, but it's the reason he moved from Constitution Hall to the Cellar Door in the 1970's, and then, the county fair in Gaithersburg, MD, with bands nobody's heard since 1970 like America. Sorry. (shrug)... pthuuut.
Their lead singer he plays the guitar sooooo cool like. His swagger is so cool while he plays the guitar, sings and does his act. Yeah, and the other guitar player is real good. They rock !!
Steppenwolf is so MUCH more than "Born to be Wild".
Songs like "Move Over", "Disappointment Number", "Lost and Found", "What Would You Do", "The Pusher", "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam", "Power Play", "Monster" and on and on. I think they are the one group that NEVER put out a bad album...a most AMAZING group.
I guess it was the prelude of heavy metal, but strongly based in blues, so it was kind of a wild rock and roll sound with bluessy cheesey flavor perhaps more cool melodic chord progressions than classic blues chords format
I guess they retired they were a no show at "Ol' Hippys Joint 2/24/07. Happy Birthday Al and Ste! A great time was had by all with the large kettle of Shrimp Gumbo, provided by Ol' Hippy himself!
I saw Steppenwolf last summer (2006) in Alberta (Canada). They still sounded great, and this song was the 'finale'. Unfortunately, according to what they told us, they are going to retire next year.
Since the concert started I noticed that the sound engineering was terrific, quite a bit difference from regular bands...plus I think outdoor concerts sound better
In the late '60's there was an extended version of "The Pusher" it was almost 30 mins of play...it consisted of sound check, so you heard some wild sounds....
I seen Steppenwolf at DuQuoin, Illinois in summer of '69,and like you say, they played it for a really long length of time. Those were the days when they were at their height and their best. Was great.
Rock Steady Video Productions will be filming Stephen Wolf & Garden of Eden LIVE at The Mason County Metal fest in Bellfair Washington On October 22, 2011. Dont miss this show.

They played in Wichita last week and completely knocked me out. The Pusher has been a favorite song for 30 years now, not getting over it yet.

Amen brother! Steppenwolf the Second still to this day gives me chills of joy! What a phenomenal project they were!

I guess it was the prelude of heavy metal, but strongly based in blues, so it was kind of a wild rock and roll sound with bluessy cheesey flavor perhaps more cool melodic chord progressions than classic blues chords format

They did retire in 2006..... I've heard John Kay interview on Satellite radio recently, so this one is one the last amateur videos of this band

This song has one of the best guitar hooks ever - easier to hear on the album.

Nice job, I hated carrying cameras to concerts but have a few times. PS This is "The Pusher" by Hoyt Axton. The boys always paid great tribute to it.

Was great.
