Thanks for this video; I love watching the beautiful Apis dorsata, and found it interesting to see the making of a smoker which doubles as a bee brush!
There seemed to be a large amount of capped brood, but not much honey on that comb. Also, if the queen was injured while being brushed off, the bees wouldn't have any eggs to raise another queen from... Is this their normal way of harvesting honey?
it's the normal way, but this is right at the end of the season...last harvest...so the hunter takes it all...during the season he just takes the honey...the bees fly to the mountain and they will be back...so long as there is still a forest for them to make their home...that's the real danger now...epidemic deforestation paired with the new monocrop rubber planting fetish...
sadly the wild honey hunters' way of life is under serious threat in Cambodia due to the rapid disappearance of forests in the country. Logging is rife in the small pockets of remaining jungle, and monocrop rubber plantations are being promoted as the new 'natural forest' environment. Unfortunately nobody will find these bees at home on a rubber tree...
He left a thick starter strip on the branch. They probably started drawing new comb as soon as the smoke cleared. There didn't seem to be much honey on that comb. The super white wax is honey cappings, like Europoen bees? Do these guys eat the Larve and the Pupae also? I know they eat everything else that moves!
Question - if you are still around? Since it is tropical there does the hive just go find another spot, and start producing again (like mad)? Modern beekeeping usually only harvests half or a third of the wax from the hive so that the bees have something to live on through the winter months. (Sorry but it is like stealing their food from them, right?)
@MzProgressive that is why you have african killer honey bees. they would destroy the whole hive and so the docile bee genetics is destroyed leaving the more agressive and defensive bees behind and so they a nusiance. the modern way allows the bees to keep genetics and also allow them to recover.
but then some modern bee breeding programs make the bees sick through inbreeding which is sooo bad on the genetic diversity for the bees to fight off disease. one reason for colony collapse and also the GMO foods monsanto poisons us with really hurts the bees even more!
this was end of season harvesting - so the whole comb is taken for honey and wax... most of these bees go to a nearby mountain and will return next season ... during the rest of the honey harvesting season, the approach is the same, but only the honey comb is removed while the colony is left alive and in peace (once the smoke has cleared)

Some sorts of bees, do not sting. I believe this is some of them.
It was cruel, that they took everything. They could have taken half of the honey, so the bees could survive. Basterds.

Do they still get a stung a little bit anyways? Even if they smoke them?

The smoke masks the scent of the alarm phermone that the guard bees put out - so he's not seen as a threat by the bees
