This is an awesome game when it's given a chance. The game, like most, starts of real slow; giving the users' a chance to pick things up, but once it gets going, man there's so much to do in terms of character development, questing, and social activities.
The environments are awesome too, they really set the mood, especially in some places in The Shadowlands, the music and special effects can really captivate you're imagination.
This game's awesome, everyone should try it at least once!

I played this game for several years mostly on and off but the key to success is to either prepare to grind out forever and get extremely lucky with a random mission or boss drop... or to have really generous friends. The good items ingame are always camped and are sold for an extremely high amount that you won't be able to make without a really good character or really good friends or orgmates. Without money you can't make a good character and without a good character you can't make money.
yeah, first time I tried Anarchy Online (around 2003) I tried to run between Tir and Newland as level 10. And let me tell you, I never even got close due to all the mobs attacking me.
This person never played the game..... LOL..... I played for 8 years (220/20/50) keeper, 210/15 meta
As for the lag... you can't play AO on your shitty pc... get a decent video card (512mb +) and you'll have no problem.
I ran a 1gb video card, and 4 gigs of ram (AO is ram-intensive, not so much VPU) and never had lag, even in massive beast raids... it helps to play on DSL or cable, instead of dialup.
Some mobs do attack you but its usually in a instanced mission or a dungeon. Sometimes it happens in the overland but its rare at the low levels. I always loved this game though. :)
You made a very nice review there. I am pleased with the community too, but it's obvious that you didn't play the game for a long time: The enemies DO attack you and the battle is NOT basic(maybe with engineer, yes, but with other classes, such as the nanotechnician, its much better) . I've tried many MMOGs in my life, even alpha/beta tested some, but I can't think of any one that's better than Anarchy Online. The atmosphere alone makes you want to play there, and explore the world. That said, I have a problem with this game... the story, which started out great back in 2001, and moved at a reasonable pace, simply stoped altogether. Nowadays, the conflict between Clans and Omni seems to be simply an excuse for PvP. Still, it's unbeaten when compared with everything else out.
I still don't understand AO. I fucking love tutorial island, but it goes downhill from there. After leaving tutorial island, there is a quest chain that leaves you with a fancy helmet and backpack (assuming omni), but then you're left on you're own. You have two options, either raidraidraid in the subway and then in ToTW (fucking trains), or doing missions that make you walk to a cave in the middle of nowhere and killing everyone inside.

Im lucky AO was my first mmorpg, because I think I would have struggled to have the patience if I had played something else first. It's easily the most complex mmo I've played, and for that reason, it is also the best.
I really feel for new players of AO coming from any other game, because, quite simply, it's too complex for them to grasp.
This game is almost like a WoW.. I can only say that WoW has taken a lot of things from this game... And for all the WoWtards, Wow isn't the first original MMORPG.. Even WoW has taken a lot of parts from other MMORPGS..
This game has great graphics for the time it came out.. And it even has 2 expansion which gives A LOT of content to the game...
btw, 1 thing the interview got wrong (as others pointed out) was about him not being attacked, it depends on where you are, some mobs are social, some are aggressive, some are sided, and others are neutral, then you have mixes of all those attributes. maybe he was commenting on just the start up area Oo I'm not sure how anyone could spend any time in the Shadowlands without being attacked.

It's currently not very pretty because it was released in 2001, ask yourself would you play WoW if it used the same engine as its's 2002 predecessor? warcraft 3 reign of chaos? Anarchy is getting a visual upgrade, do a youtube search for "Anarchy Online - New engine rough-cut"
well there is a big grafics update and DX9 update comming and they have been working hard on it to make sure it all works well. i know ill go back there once they upgrade the grafics after beign there nearly 8 years burned me out.
PS. the reviewer also forgot to mention Implants and symbiants and also how spesific classes bring a synergy to any team or group that can make them go from effective to Kick ass.
All good for recommending but i dident really think you did a very good job on the facts Basicly mobs attack you if they are aggresive as in the sense that a rabbit wont attack you but a cyborg will. The great points in AO is the PvP even though it takes alot of planning and math to make your char able to stand with the best and thats after you have collected the gear and twinking gear. The game is my favorit game even though im not playing it i will allways come back to it.

For a game that came out when Ultima Online was concidered good grafics these grafics are amazing. AO is said to be given AoCs engine soon and hopefully some commercials to boost the active player numbers.

I have played this game about 7 or 8 years now and although it does get boring at times it still facinates me. It is just sad how things have changed. You CANNOT get that far and not be attacked, there's no such lag! Pathetic lie.
People have probably already mentioned it, but the ONLY place in the game where you DON'T get attacked is the Newbie Island (the fan-name of the ICC Shuttleport starter area), where the enemies RIGHT AT THE START are friendly to not turn players off, but when you go further into the island, you meet ones that attack. When you get to the real game, EVERYTHING attacks.
I believe he didn't even finish Newbie Island, and just read a bit about the game to cover the other things he talked about.
Which wouldn't be a bad thing to do (can't expect you to play through everything you review to the end) if it wasn't for the fact that you now try to cover that up with a bad and illogical lie.
AO is deeply complex, the reviewer clearly missed the point of first mastering the skill system and creating a totaly custom character, but that's ok, AO is not for everyone; there is always fisherprice versions like wow/swg for such people.
These games let you coast through with little input or learning, and wipe your nose for you.
When you ready for something challenging, play AO if not, np but don't try to mock that wich you can't understand or you'll look like an idiot.

that is for me too, i just practised and before i knew it i had an account of lvl 100 and i started too really help other people too get lvl up.(i started too put more time in it and didn't care about my own lvls anymore)

Not only did this fucker OBVIOUSLY barely play the game, and I mean BARELY. He throws pictures of Shadowlands enemies in his video and talks about them (legs of jelly..?) not attacking on sight!? If you haven't been attacked on sight, you havent even walked across the beach in the STARTING map, where anyone below lvl 6 or 7 gets attacked on sight. What a dillhole.
All the good points you had were true, all the bad were just plain wrong. At the time of release, the game was BEAUTIFUL, and the story, original. As far as mobs not attacking you... this PROVES to me that you never played it. Dont review games if you're not going to play them. Now bugger off!
Anarchy Online needs to be reviewed again, by someone who actually devotes some time to it.
This guy says: "it's sad the game gets boring at the later levels" -- where the hell did he get xp to get into the higher levels if he didnt see any mob that automatically aggroed him? You for sure didnt go to the Temple of the Three Winds, which is a dungeon intended for players that are around level 60, 27% of the total levelling path. (and like 1% in terms of the xp needed to get there btw)
It is free to play, only the first 3 expansions, AO, notum wars and alien invasion, if you want shadow lands lost eden or whatever u do have to pay monthly.
Right now my account says free to play untill 2010\ 1\ 1 at 00:00:00 hrs.
It is a pretty big letdown that you only get those cool mechs if you pay, and they have a VERY limited use...
There's only one reason I'm considering this game: No hidden cash shop limitations, like Runes of Magic and Perfect World and Mabinogi and all those Korean free to play mmo's.
There's a level cap, but it's not nearly as sneaky as cash shop caps.
Im going to re download it, I played ages ago (Level 120 fixer with GA3 ;D, FOR THE CLAN) just to see how its changed. Is the combat still hot barring and click to attack, etc?
For some reason, if you have 64-bit Vista, it takes forever to download, if you install in the program files folder. Make a new folder outside program files and install there instead. Not only will the game install much quicker, some in-game issues exclusive to Vista 64 users will be resolved.
And why is my stuff saving to "OS (C:)" when its only got like 50GB in it. And the other drive has like.. 400GB.. Somethings not right here.. There are NO program files in the 400GB one eitherrrrrr.. I know nothing on the hard drives of computers :P
@uberdose I uninstalled it and reinstalled it into the 400GB drive, Im putting all my games and etc in that drive (400GB drive) no Program files; just putting it in the drive. It actually makes my games faster compared to my friends windows 7 with about the same space as mine (being used and in total), We both got one on the same week.
I used to save in program files and all, but acting like its a flash drive or something makes it quite fast. .
I dont know WHY they have to complain about the gfx in ao since the game is 9 years old by now. When i was on beta for AO i was stunned by the amazing gfx, and the fact that the game still holds up after almost 10 years is pretty amazing. And in its glory days it had a very mature playerbase. dunno bout that now tho since i havnt been in the game since 2005. kick ass game tho, gonna reactivate my engineer thalshiar when the new gfx engine is out, just to see how nice rubi-ka can look. :)

quite a unique and very deep game filled with a rich sci-fi lore and feeling to it. Agreed that the music in this game is fantastic, especially IMO in Rome, that tune just mellows me out. Combat can be basic depending on your class, but theres something for everyone.
I dont know. Theres something about Anarchy Online that makes it seem like a real world. I have tried many other MMO's, but none of them ever felt like a real world. When I log into AO, It feels like I really am running around a wartorn city, or going deep into a condemned subway full of mutants and muggers.
This game offers you a real sense of danger, and a real sense of making it "home" once you get to your city.
And so many different builds/items to use. Its very overwhelming.
why does everyone blame the "younger players"? I am probably what you would call a "younger player" and i am not one of those people, nor are 90% of the other "younger players" that i know. (Although there are a few that are very annoying)

this was my first MMO 9 years ago, and I have never felt so in to a game as I did in AO. Sitting on a mountain watching a sunset with the orchestra going really hit me and 8 years later i can still feel it to this day.

It's an almost 8 year old game, will run on most comps altho can get somewhat laggy in busy areas. Great thing about the game is you can play all day or 10-20 minutes, up to you.
I agree with alot of people, i dont think he played the game past lvl 40. As 4 being mello and repeditive, i have yet to see that in the 7 years i have been playing it. The pvp in the battle stations are fast paced. The skill customization is also 1 of the best perks to the game cause of the twinking possabilites (alot of items are not lvl capped but skill capped) and they are upgrading the graphics engine which they just recently posted they are using the engine from age of conan for it now
Even though all you said is entirely true, this guide is meant for people who have never played Anarchy Online before.
I, for one, only really started to enjoy the game when I got to around level 30. (Don't let this put you off, it's quite easy to get to level 30) The bigger things you got to fight and the trip out of the subway and into the "real world" drew me in quite alot.
And yes, I agree he probably didn't play past level 40.
this guy must not have gone out of the backyard because there is plenty of stuff that will more then happy to rip you apart. also he comments that the music cuts out and it is horrible to not have it. i personally dont play with any sound on at all, i prefer my own music. and all this footage is years old, including concept art for stuff that was released over 5-6 years ago.
The game doesn't begin to repeat itself once you reach higher levels. That's actually where it becomes most challenging and you find more things that must be done...too many things IMO.
But it is however one of the most unique mmo's ive ever played ^__^
He said during the review that you ALWAYS have to start attacking your target first and that they never attack you, that is a blatant lie. Sure, in the startup zone the only ones that attack you on sight are the rollerrats and the rest leave you alone, but thats intended, i mean how fun is it to find yourself getting gang banged by NPC's before you even learn the controlls? Once you leave the startup zone pretty much evrything attacks you on sight, except for NPC's that are on your side.
haha, unfortunately though, the game is dying. I've got screenshots from a couple of years ago shortly after the free play feature was brought in where you can see hundreds of people in Borealis ROLEPLAYING, now you're lucky to find 30 people in Bor in total, sad times.

I like how he calls this game "not innovative". It got released in 2001 way before any of the modern mmo's like WoW.
- You do get attacked on sight, you don't have to start every fight in the game.
- The high number of stats is one of the best things in AO. Everyone has different builds, almost no character is the same.
- Leveling up more then one weaponskill is not recommended.
- Later levels aren't boring, they are the most fun levels with the most content.

btw, 1 thing the interview got wrong (as others pointed out) was about him not being attacked, it depends on where you are, some mobs are social, some are aggressive, some are sided, and others are neutral, then you have mixes of all those attributes. maybe he was commenting on just the start up area Oo I'm not sure how anyone could spend any time in the Shadowlands without being attacked.
regardless of the interview, this game is extremely adictive , and worth a try by anyone,

no the basic version is free for unlimited time level cap is 200 the expansions are what make it cost a monthly fee and the level cap goes to:
shadow lands 220
Aliens invasion is 30 more
Lost eden adds 70 more levels.
It's currently not very pretty because it was released in 2001, ask yourself would you play WoW if it used the same engine as its's 2002 predecessor? warcraft 3 reign of chaos? Anarchy is getting a visual upgrade, do a youtube search for "Anarchy Online - New engine rough-cut"

well there is a big grafics update and DX9 update comming and they have been working hard on it to make sure it all works well. i know ill go back there once they upgrade the grafics after beign there nearly 8 years burned me out.
PS. the reviewer also forgot to mention Implants and symbiants and also how spesific classes bring a synergy to any team or group that can make them go from effective to Kick ass.

All good for recommending but i dident really think you did a very good job on the facts Basicly mobs attack you if they are aggresive as in the sense that a rabbit wont attack you but a cyborg will. The great points in AO is the PvP even though it takes alot of planning and math to make your char able to stand with the best and thats after you have collected the gear and twinking gear. The game is my favorit game even though im not playing it i will allways come back to it.

For a game that came out when Ultima Online was concidered good grafics these grafics are amazing. AO is said to be given AoCs engine soon and hopefully some commercials to boost the active player numbers.

those who dont like anarchy online and play WoW instead are just not skilled.because it is a lot harder to be actually good in this game than in WoW because you just need to spend a lot of time playing WoW and getting those PvP items in this game you actually have to have some skill thats why i like it. and the community is much better than in any online game ive ever seen.

I have played this game about 7 or 8 years now and although it does get boring at times it still facinates me. It is just sad how things have changed. We used to be a group of players who actually played and worked on our toons. Now mostly you see alot of peaple who wont do anything without an outside tank to help them power level. I just hope it gets better when they finally introduce the new graphic engine.. I love AO and cant get my self to cancel.. go figure

People have probably already mentioned it, but the ONLY place in the game where you DON'T get attacked is the Newbie Island (the fan-name of the ICC Shuttleport starter area), where the enemies RIGHT AT THE START are friendly to not turn players off, but when you go further into the island, you meet ones that attack. When you get to the real game, EVERYTHING attacks.
I believe he didn't even finish Newbie Island, and just read a bit about the game to cover the other things he talked about.

AO is deeply complex, the reviewer clearly missed the point of first mastering the skill system and creating a totaly custom character, but that's ok, AO is not for everyone; there is always fisherprice versions like wow/swg for such people.
These games let you coast through with little input or learning, and wipe your nose for you.
When you ready for something challenging, play AO if not, np but don't try to mock that wich you can't understand or you'll look like an idiot.

that is for me too, i just practised and before i knew it i had an account of lvl 100 and i started too really help other people too get lvl up.(i started too put more time in it and didn't care about my own lvls anymore)

If I had a nickel every time I hear some messed up "galactic/orcish" name of a clan/race... I'd pretty much be rich enough to java up my own rpg, Fuck graphics, challenging puzzles, endless grinding... It's all in my stash, 2 words... "Fucking Marijuana"! There! There's your million dollar Mmorpg right there!

Not only did this fucker OBVIOUSLY barely play the game, and I mean BARELY. He throws pictures of Shadowlands enemies in his video and talks about them (legs of jelly..?) not attacking on sight!? If you haven't been attacked on sight, you havent even walked across the beach in the STARTING map, where anyone below lvl 6 or 7 gets attacked on sight. What a dillhole.

First, this review sucks.

All the good points you had were true, all the bad were just plain wrong. At the time of release, the game was BEAUTIFUL, and the story, original. As far as mobs not attacking you... this PROVES to me that you never played it. Dont review games if you're not going to play them. Now bugger off!

Anarchy Online needs to be reviewed again, by someone who actually devotes some time to it.
This guy says: "it's sad the game gets boring at the later levels" -- where the hell did he get xp to get into the higher levels if he didnt see any mob that automatically aggroed him? You for sure didnt go to the Temple of the Three Winds, which is a dungeon intended for players that are around level 60, 27% of the total levelling path. (and like 1% in terms of the xp needed to get there btw)

It is free to play, only the first 3 expansions, AO, notum wars and alien invasion, if you want shadow lands lost eden or whatever u do have to pay monthly.
Right now my account says free to play untill 2010\ 1\ 1 at 00:00:00 hrs.
It is a pretty big letdown that you only get those cool mechs if you pay, and they have a VERY limited use...

There's only one reason I'm considering this game: No hidden cash shop limitations, like Runes of Magic and Perfect World and Mabinogi and all those Korean free to play mmo's.
There's a level cap, but it's not nearly as sneaky as cash shop caps.

For some reason, if you have 64-bit Vista, it takes forever to download, if you install in the program files folder. Make a new folder outside program files and install there instead. Not only will the game install much quicker, some in-game issues exclusive to Vista 64 users will be resolved.

And why is my stuff saving to "OS (C:)" when its only got like 50GB in it. And the other drive has like.. 400GB.. Somethings not right here.. There are NO program files in the 400GB one eitherrrrrr.. I know nothing on the hard drives of computers :P

@uberdose I uninstalled it and reinstalled it into the 400GB drive, Im putting all my games and etc in that drive (400GB drive) no Program files; just putting it in the drive. It actually makes my games faster compared to my friends windows 7 with about the same space as mine (being used and in total), We both got one on the same week.
I used to save in program files and all, but acting like its a flash drive or something makes it quite fast. .

I dont know WHY they have to complain about the gfx in ao since the game is 9 years old by now. When i was on beta for AO i was stunned by the amazing gfx, and the fact that the game still holds up after almost 10 years is pretty amazing. And in its glory days it had a very mature playerbase. dunno bout that now tho since i havnt been in the game since 2005. kick ass game tho, gonna reactivate my engineer thalshiar when the new gfx engine is out, just to see how nice rubi-ka can look. :)

quite a unique and very deep game filled with a rich sci-fi lore and feeling to it. Agreed that the music in this game is fantastic, especially IMO in Rome, that tune just mellows me out. Combat can be basic depending on your class, but theres something for everyone.

I dont know. Theres something about Anarchy Online that makes it seem like a real world. I have tried many other MMO's, but none of them ever felt like a real world. When I log into AO, It feels like I really am running around a wartorn city, or going deep into a condemned subway full of mutants and muggers.
This game offers you a real sense of danger, and a real sense of making it "home" once you get to your city.
And so many different builds/items to use. Its very overwhelming.

Nice review. Your voice is very southing. I might watch this video just to listen to the background music and your voice.
But this game is GREAT. I've played MANY mmorpg's. Anarchy-Online is a one of a kind game and is very uniqe.
What you said about the stats is kinda true, but as you level you know what stats you have to level. Each profession has certain stats to level.
The monsters and bots do attack you. You don't start every fight in the game. You get attacked all the time :)

The customer service is worse than I could have even imagined. Loads of bugs in this game and theyre always adding more with every failed patch.

Warms my heart because those that havent played the game...can feel what we all felt all those years ago. screaming for an MP to up yer stats as well as a doc and a trader to hit you off so you can get in that implant or nano... getting the money for your first car...5million ya... 5 and that was for a CHEEP car haha..i may come back ive been feeling the itch to play again... Man I miss being in AO it feels.. like a good 6 years of my life was just made whole playing that but then the SWG's came out and then came WoW I miss my fixer and my crat and trader and adventurer...the graphics back then was amazing as a former member of STORM I seen alot of the game thx to some really great players and people who showed me that being in a GAME is nice but being in a guild...was more like family I cant wait for the new engine 10 years later ..to see people talking about AO>>

this was my first MMO 9 years ago, and I have never felt so in to a game as I did in AO. Sitting on a mountain watching a sunset with the orchestra going really hit me and 8 years later i can still feel it to this day.

It's an almost 8 year old game, will run on most comps altho can get somewhat laggy in busy areas. Great thing about the game is you can play all day or 10-20 minutes, up to you.

I agree with alot of people, i dont think he played the game past lvl 40. As 4 being mello and repeditive, i have yet to see that in the 7 years i have been playing it. The pvp in the battle stations are fast paced. The skill customization is also 1 of the best perks to the game cause of the twinking possabilites (alot of items are not lvl capped but skill capped) and they are upgrading the graphics engine which they just recently posted they are using the engine from age of conan for it now

Even though all you said is entirely true, this guide is meant for people who have never played Anarchy Online before.
I, for one, only really started to enjoy the game when I got to around level 30. (Don't let this put you off, it's quite easy to get to level 30) The bigger things you got to fight and the trip out of the subway and into the "real world" drew me in quite alot.
And yes, I agree he probably didn't play past level 40.

The game doesn't begin to repeat itself once you reach higher levels. That's actually where it becomes most challenging and you find more things that must be done...too many things IMO.
But it is however one of the most unique mmo's ive ever played ^__^

He said during the review that you ALWAYS have to start attacking your target first and that they never attack you, that is a blatant lie. Sure, in the startup zone the only ones that attack you on sight are the rollerrats and the rest leave you alone, but thats intended, i mean how fun is it to find yourself getting gang banged by NPC's before you even learn the controlls? Once you leave the startup zone pretty much evrything attacks you on sight, except for NPC's that are on your side.
