Hello, it is lovely to 'hear' of you here. It's your version I knew and loved (I actually got mixed up when coming across this version recently, because I remember Jody Watley from the early 90s as well as your song with N-Sync, and I wasn't listening to music much around 2000).
I'll always remember your version with N-Sync. Instantly anyone who heard it recognised it as a club classic - earlier garage soul house still firmly in the banging house camp. ....
... Things were not as slow often back in 1992 as they had been at times in 1989 to early 91, they had speeded up a bit by that time, and I loved slower house and dance so much. It's another reason why your song appealed to me so much.
Again, it's brilliant for me to hear from you here. I and many would love to hear much more of you in music. Really good regards to you.
MAW just can't help themselves can they? This is true house music. Tuneful, vocal, toe tapping, chill or dance. How this stuff isn't grooved to EVERY weekend in EVERY town in the western world is beyond me.
I love to love everything that maw touch.. sometimes I think you have to be in a different state of mind to understand house.. some people just don't get it - they don't feel it it's not just music...
@Jess2impress25 Well, for one, you need to have the mindset that listening (and dancing) to it, is a mental as well as spiritual experience. Second, you need to be able to embrace the notion that house was always meant to be both gospelly and funky. And last, you need to be able to grasp the concept that rhythms are visceral, so everybody is going to "get it" :-)
Classic tune !!! Jody's vocals are excellent and Ray Ayers on the vibraphone adds that special touch to the song as well !!! Long live Masters at Work !!!
I think this was released overseas in 2000 then in the US a year or so later. The album is called "Midnight Lounge." I recommend it if you're a real Jody Watley fan.
I have Jody Watley's 'Midnight Lounge' album---this track appears in an abbreviated 3:38 version. I like this epic version better, because every all of the players get a chance to shine, and Ms. Watley sounds absolutely exuberent.
To me this isof the quintessential part of what house music is in soul term, it goes way outside being captured by 'house'- and fits in that eternal, untouched land where Evelyn King, Shalamar and Shakatak and some of the popular voices of the rare groove scene existed. And then came house, but the best of it was just the same and little to do, in its best sense, with the great scene, at the end of the day. (Some tracks were scene linked, and classics still, but house had the best of soul too).
Is this house music? Certainly to me, undeniably of house music, Masters at Work make it that way anyway. And a classic - one of the top tracks (though there are many).
I did the original version which was sung by Tangie Reese with Viola Sykes on background vocals. Martin Davis wrote this song and did a lounge version that was never released. We remixed the lounge version and our version went to press and was on rotation with Louie at the Sound Factory Bar. Louie eventually did this remix, and a fine one, indeed.
Well it was just a great honor to have Louie assemble such a talented team to do a remake of one of my songs. I'm still just a big MAW fan like so many others.
Yes mate! Was after this E.P for years! Finally found it though in '96, absolute class. One of my favourite oldskool house/garage e.p's without a doubt.
Hi David...it's Tangie. I absolutely enjoyed recording this song with you and the gang back in the day. It brings back so many memories when I hear it...it feels like yesterday and still takes my breath away...SMOOCHIES!!!
i feel it in my BONES!!!! great mix..... my friends always made fun of my taste in music ever since i developed love and lust to house music. they think house music is boring... now personally I DONT GET IT!!! what is there not to like? are they deaf? i sometime question my self IF I HAVE DIFFERENT SET OF EARS? all i know is its a food to my soul.
Definitely one of my favorite house song, i can remember the first time i heard it on a saturday night back in 2000. I went to the record store the next monday and just sung to the seller "i love to love, yes i do i want uuuu l " lol and then bought the promo copy they just received. Now i am keeping sealed a second copy of this with official cover, hope i'll keep them for life. (-:
The Masters At Work produced another track for her on her 98 album 'Flower' (such a good album). It was a cover of the ole Romana Brooks disco/soul classic 'I Don't Want You Back'! Me oh my, it's so funky with some great backing vocal support by Cindy Mizelle, Audrey Wheeler & Paulette McWilliams! It'll be cool if someone could post it??
God, what a gem! Jody's voice is superb & that classic MAW production ! Just love it & Roy comes in with those vibes all hell breaks lose! One of MAW's finest ever I think!
Saw her sing this one live in NYC's Central Park years ago....incredible energy, vocals and presentation! And she kissed my hand- she has so much stage prescence and sings better live!
Thanks for posting this. When this came out I could only get my hands on the mix that used a sample of Sister Sledge's "Love Somebody". I later got the original on Jody's CD "Midnite Lounge". Good to hear the long version.
