  • stainted: ALL cars on ALL Class I RRs are now Roller Bearing... No More Hot Boxes (they were axles on brass bearings). the 'Box' was a container that held lube; GONE.

  • @amarkanders777 The journals can still burn out though

  • @amarkanders777 that reg was passed in 1995...I found this out while doing a model railroad layout...it was stated in a book I have and that they were removed from all rail service on ALL class 1 railroad cars some time during the late summer

  • Dang foamers. We engineers can't stand it.

  • Nice, like the point of view very much... I hope that wasn't the engineer! lol Everyone wants to be in the movie without buying a ticket........

  • its the scene from unstoppable!!!!! =O

  • I'd rather be behind a train than in front of one any day.

  • awesome shot! sounds great!

  • Would the "patrol car" be subject to the US signalling regime as a seperate move? Such a move wouldn't be acceptable under British railway regulations unless the route was either under an engineers (permanent-way) possession or the vehicle was signalled as an "on-track machine" move in its own right.

  • @TheMicksterdee No, the inspector is given authority from the dispatcher, usuallt it's called "track & time," it simple gives the inspector their limits of authority. Under track and time you can pass red signals without stopping. It allows the inspector to follow a train, but he has to have a briefing with the train's crew to let them know not to back up because he'll be right behind them.

  • I know this isn't right but to be funny, patrol car: pull over! Your speeding! Darn why won't he pull over! Hey dud sweet vid!

  • @sawman3333 Gonna be a bitch overtaking :o)

  • I live in Washington state; (especially in summer) sometimes/often inspectors follow trains DOWN mountain grades ... forested areas.... to look for any fires (started by reason of brake applications. this is because hot wheels/brake shoes throw sparks.

  • 1:58 From where is the smoke originating?

    What is guy following doing?

  • maybe he was just inspecting the track, track inspectors could give a shit about the train,

  • The patrol car was making sure nobody jumps on the train! Those cartons are loaded with millions of dollars in merchandise. Some areas when the train is moving slow, robbers will jump on the train and break into the trailers and steal stuff!!

  • yea thats what defect detectors are for. I think the longest distance between them for my route is 7 miles and they are the talking ones.

  • right @ the end the last car looked like brake rub alot of smoke maybe that,s why the patrol truck was trying 2 catch up

  • was that a powered operated switch?

  • Wait u forgot ur lunch

  • Looks like the brakes are burning up on the last cars?

  • Someone Driving A Car Behind It

  • This happens more than you think. DS and track inspectors take advantage of any opportunity to get track inspections done. This is one way to get it done.

  • Its actually called a Hi-Rail. Lol it reminds me of Smokey And The Bandit

  • can somebody explain that?

  • That's pretty neat.

I'd love to be able to drive my car on the rail tracks, avoids all those traffic jams ;-)

  • the engenier must have stolen a hot dog from the inspector :p

  • That is not a partrol car. It is a track supervisor making an inspection run.

  • @38Squid Concur; most railroads use modern trucks, such as the modified Ford F-350 shown here, for routine maintenance-of-way.

  • Ohh, when this train starts turning, the Earth stops spinning:D:D

  • Lol

  • Hey guys you forgot the manifest to the damn train STOP!!

  • I've seen this a load of times on the UP here in Kansas.

  • How is it told what order the tracks go in? I mean is it as viewed 123 or 321 or ???

  • que vela la patrulla ?

  • Nice video. I've seen the same with Union Pacific's rail line. They had a truck like the one seen in this video doing the same, right behind a Union Pacific loaded coal train. It followed the Union Pacific coal train all the way into the tunnel, and out the other side into a small little town where the guy then got out of his truck & went to get something to eat. (Not a bad idea. You'd get to the store/food center quicker & easier. Lol.)

  • I'm pretty sure the engineer slept with the track inspector's wife. The inspector is trailing the this guy like flies on stink lol

  • @est86leo LoL if he going to kept up he better move little faster lol.

  • @est86leo couldn you tell the engineer was driving his wife. the big orange thing at the front ahah

  • @est86leo No actually the inspector and engineer are gay. The inspector is going to flag down the train and give it to the engineer in the ass, in the locomotive cab!

  • Whats the car for? Monitoring the trains progress up the pass?

  • It's just a track inspector, they hi-rail their territory every single day looking for track defects like missing clips or spikes, dips and sags, or displaced ballast.

  • You serious? Every single day?

  • Yes. Not every track every day, but every route-mile every day... For example, they might hi-rail Cajon M1 on Monday and M2 on Tuesday. Each track inspector is responsible for ~40 miles or so. The Cajon guy is responsible for San Bernardino to Victorville, another one for Victorville to Barstow. Even when traffic levels are very high, the dispatcher will always make a window for this inspection. It's important, ya know!

  • yeah, if not, you will be hearing about a derailment in your local area

  • What part of the Cajon pass was this filmed in?

  • great video.the last car was really smoking.

  • think he had a hot box on the last car judging from all the smoke

  • @staintedcards

Probably from a vehicle driving down the dirt road that is along the tracks at that point.

  • @staintedcards I like hot boxes....Only because I used to work for a derailment crew lol.. hot box means wheel change out

  • @Aaronlamb1 I thought hot box referred to the journal box overheating?

  • @vettelover2009 Not all cars have journal boxes. alot of times you just have a wheel that goes bad.

  • @Aaronlamb1 oh...didn't know that...so how do they set them up if its just a wheel that goes bad, but no journal box?

  • @vettelover2009 The car is jacked up and a new axle+wheelset is put in

  • it looks like rail simulator :)

  • You are absolutely right, lol; It does look like rail simulator!!!
