He has a point but it's not quite that simple. Obviously you'd rather have a guy strike out than hit into a double play, but guys who strike out a ton aren't moving runners over as much as guys who put the ball in play more. And it's not as if Ryan Howard is hitting over .300 with all those k's.
@SquidGuy Moving runners isn't really all that important unless it's the bottom of the 9th or something. And he did hit over .300 in 2006 and struck out 181 times.
Mitch is right, as usual. I never understood the whole "Howard Strikes out too much" Argument. The guy bats around .270 and hits 40 homers a year...that's Schmidt numbers right there folks. Hell, Schmidt struck out quite a bit too but he has a statue standing outside the park, so why villify Howard for it?
Rob Deer of the Detroit Tigers made a career out of striking out. The guy would hit 30-40 homers a year and barely bat .200. He'd get up and either K or homer.
Mitch is very honest and it is refreshing to watch him on post game live. He is a joy to watch and listen to and he really offers very good insight and I am glad he's with comcast post game. I hope he's here for a long long time. Mitch is cool de la!! and for those fuckers that gave him a hard time over the 93 world series, get over it!!! Even back in the day, people ripped him, why?? Fucking joe carter golfed that thing over the wall. Big deal, water under the bridge...GO Phils!!!
I read an article about Williams just recently and how well he's doing now--something interesting that he said was that he thinks Philadelphia fans have forgiven him and grown to love him again because they saw him as a man who was willing to stand up and take the blame. He blew that series--no way around that. If it had just been Carter, that would have been one thing, but remember, he also blew a 14-9 in Game 4. But he stood up and took the blame, and that endeared him to the fans again
Mitch is an excellent analyst--I learn more from him and Joe Kerrigan (on Daily News Live) on a Daily basis than I ever have from Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan combined.
Mitch is right. But I would like to see Ryan Howard not set a new all-time strikeout record some year....
Just last night the Marlins completed their 9th inning comeback against the Mets by getting the tying run in on a groundout. A K there would have killed that and the Phils might still be 2-1/2 out. I like Mitch, but don't tell me that a K with a runner on third and one out is just another out.

strikeouts show how much self reliance the pitcher has. If he can strikeout everyone, he wouldnt need all the extra fielders

He's not talking about strikeouts for a pitcher.

Howard is far from that.

On the note of guys who either strike out or homer, Dave Kingman has to be my favorite. I don't think he ever saw a pitch he didn't want to swing at.

Why not? He has the single season record, might as well go for it all. He's got 1989 strikeouts to go for the record though so I doubt he gets it.
(The record holder is Reggie Jackson, by the way. Not exactly bad company.)

well that goes for any out. a groundout with a runner on third can be good, just like a groundout with a runner on first and one out can DOUBLY bad.
