ok so what if he was the mola ram in some cheap indiana flick- if you are a real art connoissuer, you cant tell me that Indiana was any piece of good work, nor was Mr India or any of other cheap stuff Bolly churns out in the name of entertainment. The stereotyped Bolly villian- that's what i am talking about. So much lack of originality you never know which movie you are watching. same old growling, same old rage- show his acting to any real critic, and see how they laugh at you and him.
Internationally speaking though, I've known people who laugh their arse off when they see bollywood movies & on the other hand, I've also seen people appreciating bollywood films. i will give you one example- Anupam Kher. He is one of the finest actor we have. Look at the 2 min powerful presence in Rang De or see his Khosla ka Ghosla. But the problem is he is too busy doing cheap stuff, like running around Rakhi Sawant in Buddha Margaya- doesnt that make you ashamed you ever liked that guy. Its probably the problem with the movie industry itself which comes with such poor crowdpleaser ideas, but then you got to hold your ground- esp if you are such a senior actor.
If you want to talk about good acting, talk about Ajay himself in this movie, talk about him in Apaharan or Company or any other countless movies, talk of Rahul Bose and his movies, talk of Aamir, talk of Konkona, talk of Paresh in some of his newer roles, talk of anybody but Amrish. Show me one decent movie he has done. Of course i have a soft corner for him too, but not as an actor- atleast in as much as the roles he has done in commercial movies.
Many of the actors you mentioned emerged with proper talent to please the ever-hungry "Indian audience". I put that in quotations so that I'm clear of the fact that MASALA films, as we know them, have clearly more commercial values in the Indian film industry. It is business after all & I think you quite well understand my point I'm making.
If you remember Shekhar Kapoor's Mr. India, I doubt that would reconsider what you typed here as a reply to my casual comment. He had a great deal of impact over international audiences as well, known for his roles as 'Khan' in Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi" which was released in 1982 & as the main antagonist as 'Mola Ram' in Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom" which was released 2 years after that in 1984.
He is one of my personal favz also 'coz he was also a good stage actor, you see... a lil trivia for you & everybody who are reading this; In 1979, he was a well-known stage actor and won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. If you're saying that he is bad at acting, then one would only wonder why he acted in Hindi, Kannada, Hollywood, Punjabi Telugu & Tamil movies, over 400 movies altogether between his career since 1967 to 2005.Again, quite impressive I feel.
what class do you see in Amrish Puri and his acting ?? See how he is growling like a dog around in this song. That is what you call grade A acting. Amrish never knew how to deliver a dialogue properly, that's why he used to growl always. Never once spoke in his natural tone. Probably his only good movie i can remember is that one with Anil Kapoor and Tabu- Virasat.
Let me put it this way... When it comes to character roles, Amrish Puri definitely knew what it took to "act" it out. People enjoyed his movies because of what you describe as "growling". Whenever one would picturize a villian in a bollywood movie, he would be the face they would have in their minds. Not bad, I'd say for an image as an established actor.
