Arroyo was incredibly gifted and did a wide variety of roles and diverse musical styles. She excelled as Elsa,Senta, Aida,Leonora, in Trovatore and Forza, Butterfly, Tosca, Gioconda, she did Mozart, Handel, the woman has incredible musicianship.
God, I had forgotten how wonderful Martina was as Elsa. I remember the performances with her and Sandor Konya in the 60's. Indeed, there is a reason why Karl Böhm LOVED doing Lohengrin with her, and always asked for her when he did the opera.
Dvorakova has been one of my favorite singers from the moment i first heard her recordings. The timbre of the voice is very individual and her musical instincts are always in keeping with the drama.
Dvorakova was not only good and technically very well equipped singer but also a great actress and very intelligent person, that's why she didn't have problem to cover so very different parts with very strong vocal and stage appearance
5 stars too for the Ortrud, Ludmila Dvorakova. Somewhat controversial in the roles of Brunhilde and Isolde, she was outstanding in the "Zwischenfach" roles: Venus, Ortrud, Kundry.
I hope that one day the Met or for that matter Bayreuth will release a recording of lohengrin with Irene Dalis as Ortrud. I believe Dalis sang this role in 1962 and her performance was so well received that at the hallowed place applauds broke out after the invocation in Act 2, a thing not heard since 1937 when the great Klose was so greated
lamusicahera, beautiful and impressive! Martina Arroyo shows how a romantic Opera should sound. A perfect belcanto vocal technique through the whole tessitura and by such diameter! I really enjoy it. Excellent!
what a great Elsa --It should be remembered that Arroyo sang most of the secondary soprano roles in the Ring at the Metropolitan before being singed for major roles. She sings German beautifully with a rich soprano voice- Get Arroyo's Schoenberg Guerrelieder and her Verdi Requiem with Bernstein and the young Domingo.

That is Martina Arroyo's voice but I believe the photo is that of Marion Anderson, contralto, isn't it ?

@MastersoftheOpera - no, it is definitely a young Arroyo and bears no reseblence to Anderson.

This is like the holy grail of Met works because they never released this version with Arroyo as Elsa commercially, but one can hope...
