  • "The Divine One" had such a unique, incredible voice. My favorite. But this video is, I think, from the "Satin Doll" performances in Tokyo in 1985. Her last performances were in 1989 in NY. By 1990, she was too ill to perform, and died in April 1990 of lung cancer. A sad loss for the world of music. She was one of a kind.

  • she is good but here she shows too much deep voice!why?

    it's not necessary!

  • one afternoon in 1975,at the age of 16,I flew back to JFK from Bermuda on a Pan Am 707,and sitting across the aisle was Sara Vaughn.I was eating the Crab salad for lunch, and she sat there watching me enjoy it until she leaned over and tapped me on the arm,and inquired if the salad was good..I said it was very good, she then grabbed the stewardess and had her bring her a Crab salad too..and that is my contact with the Divine sara..pretty neat for a 16 year old

  • Always loved Sara Vaughan, this is one of my favorites

  • Does anyone know if I can get this on DVD anywhere? Please tell me! I kinda desperately want it! It's really a gem.

  • @LuigiKwok yes you can!

  • @buffalmacco76 Do you know where I can get it?

  • @LuigiKwok I have 2 concerts of her in tokyo '85. One of them is commercially available (but it's rare). I found the other one from a collector, years ago.

  • @buffalmacco76 Oooh alright, thank for the info! I'll try to find it somewhere on the net first. Just this concert alone includes many of my favorite Sarah Vaughan performances.

  • RIP MY BEAUTIFUL DAD THIS WAS YOURS AND MUMS SONG .I LOVE YOU

  • FANTABULOUS! SO BEAUTIFUL...Thank you for sharing Sarah Vaughan...."SassyDivine" what an awesome, talented lady.. she is missed! TONS of LOVE, HUGS and BLESSINGS and WISHING YOU A MILLION SUNSHINES! Luv, LaBelleLa *PASS ON THE LOVE*

  • heartbreakingly gorgeous as always and sort of comforting to know there are still like-minded Sarah worshippers listening and loving!

  • Sarah was always devine and always will be!What a wonderful video! She is truly missed! Sal

  • No one is or was bad like Sarah V her range highs or lows the vibrato in her voice! that ole black magic is a monster! Bravo!

  • What an artist! She shows me how to sing the blues . . .

  • She can turn a song into a whole glorious album. We miss her and the likes of her will nor recur!

  • a truly wondrous singer with a beautiful voice, and what a range she had. This is singing of the highest class. A unique and lovely performer

  • This is my favorite version of this song. she is so incredible I was moved to tears!

  • She has the best voice for this song , love it

  • The definition of perfection.

  • You people are fools to mention Amy Winehouse with the greats of soul music. You could maybe say Jill Scott or Mary J Blige. But Amy Winehouse had but 2 albums with 2 hits. People like Sarah Vaughn made magic for 40 or 50 plus years. Please don't disrespect the music i love with throwing a woman who's biggest his was a pop song about rehab with graceful, beautiful women like Sarah Vaughn, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald and so on.

  • It's not polite to talk about Winehouse she was a lost soul and drug addiction also killed Billie Holliday I don't see anyone talking shit about her?

  • what an amazing voice!!

  • Me too ..I love this mezmorizing voice. so calming and wonderful, just what one needs to relax and unwind after a long yucky day. Thank you Sarah your talent is amazing.

  • She's unbelievable..........My God.... This is the first time I heard her singing....I love her XXXXXXXXXXX

  • OMG - I had forgotton how her voice is like a fine wine.

  • Sassy is the greatest .

  • more age ...more perfect....the number one !!

  • Brilliant! Simply magnificent!

  • This performance would have been one of her last performances before she passed away. Of all the great singers of the 20th century who had long careers, Sarah Vaughan's voice and range held up to the end without any signs of deterioration unlike Ella (my favourite), Sinatra, Callas and Aretha. There was no noticeable decline in the quality of her voice. Her instrument defied logic. From the 40's to this performance in 1990 she set a vocal standard that no one, in my opinion, has equalled.

  • bonjour, hello,

    an other version..

  • what a treat!

  • How can someone dislike perfection.. Makes no sense whatsoever.

  • my dads favorite, played for you dad as we carried you in ,miss you and will always think of you when i hear this.,god bless you dad, and thank you x PHIL ERRINGTON 1931-2010

  • the most spectacular singer and musician ever!!!! This is from another world

  • "Lady Gaga may wrap HERSELF in bacon"

"Herself"? You've got to be kidding.

  • This video is amazing!!!!! I can listen to this over & over Sarah Vaughn is a true legend!

  • The best female voice ever - and by much.

  • if any of you missed her in person, you really missed something special

  • Oh god.. You bless us whith the voices like this voice..... thank u thank u!

  • She's incredible . . . boy she really hits those notes! Her songs get me going to go out and do my day!

  • Wish I was alive back then just to see this!

  • Love you Sarah! If I make it to Heaven I really hope I'm within hearing distance of your eternal voice. x

  • this voice just melts my heart

  • I like it.

  • damn i wasn't even alive yet lol

  • BEAUTIFUL. JUST PRICELESS.

  • This maybe my favorite verision on Funny Valentine... It's beautifully done!

  • Her voice just seemed to get better with age. There will never be another "Sassy."

  • i love her low baritone voice. it pulls you in and keeps you there, mesmerized :)

  • i m a singer i love this song...

  • I'm in love with this kind of songs!!! can anyone suggest me plz any other songs like this genre?...

  • The darkest version of this tune, that I've ever heard. Spellbinding!

  • @ibrp Have you heard the Chet Baker one? it is also for throwing yourself through the window when you broke up

  • Michelle Pfeiffer in the Fabulous Baker Boys also does an amazing, heart wrenching version of this song. It's all about the phrasing and the emotion that comes through. If it gives you shivers up the spine then it's being done right.

  • I forgot to BREATHE watching this!!!!! LOVE IT

  • 20 people's hands SLIPPED as they went to press the like button.

  • Shivers damn it! Shivers. wow

  • Wonderful, Sarah. I Love you! Forever!

  • wow..

  • Who in their right mind would dislike this?

  • Thank You Sarah, for this version, nearly makes me cry everytime I hear it :')

  • This here is GREAT MUSIC...MUSIC WE ALL CAN LISTEN AND LEARN FROM

  • Now this is music!

  • UNBELIEVABLE - This is quite possibly the best video of all time. Thanks for sharing it!

  • god this women is just too much. im just hooked on her and she is way before my time im just in love wth this voice

  • This woman doesn't sing. She lifts. Damn.

  • @gomektampa AMEN!!!!!

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaat

  • Total control, total intelligence of her material, total beauty. She sets the standards and noone else does.

  • 18 persone che di musica nn capiscono un emeritO cazzO -.-"

  • Hey matrags: I both suggest and suppose that a lot of people are unlikeable...that's life....BUT, Ms. Vaughn owns this song in a way no other can....so, for the individuals that can't appreciate the beauty I say 20 thumbs for my vote and that will make up for the unappreciative..............Shar xo

  • Nobody today can match this perfection and considering she was suffering with lung cancer when she sang this is makes it all the more poignant. This is what singing is all about..... Lady GaGa may wrap herslf in bacon to get attention, but this generation relied on their talents and year of commitment.... Outstanding, truly brilliant!!

  • @john1379 pretentious much? ;)

  • @ChrisAndTaylorMusic Douche-y and moronic much?

  • @john1379 Sarah Vaughan's my favorite singer of all time I think, or at least one of them. I disagree with you saying nobody can match this kind of talent. Amy Winehouse has a style all her own and original content that deserves recognition as well and should be archived along side the likes of these singers. Too bad she died though, so young. I agree with you about the rest though of your comment. Gaga has some good pop songs though but this is a different genre. She's not stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • @buffalmacco76 It's not ridiculous to mention Winehouse if you can appreciate her voice divorced from her personal life. Not ridiculous at all. I didn't say match either. I meant that winehouse adequately represented this kind of genre that has long since died

  • @john1379 And winehouse was a bulimic, alcoholic, crack/cocaine addict, marijuana smoker, cigarette smoker, ectasy addict, heroine addict, and had emphysema. So considering all that, which each one of those things would affect her voice negatively, I would say she's pretty talented.

  • @john1379 one of the best comments i have ever read!! :)))

  • 18 people don't know what means the word "music"...Wonderful very wonderful!

  • Thank you roscoegino, some people dont know real music when they hear it!!!! The likes of Carmen McRae,Miles Davis,Ella Fitzgerald ,Nina Simone and Duke Ellington have pave the way for the artis we hear today in (2011)

  • Sarah was not a jazz singer. She WAS jazz.

  • For some reason, this song performed at an older age, becomes tragically more beautiful than when it is sung buy a younger performer.

  • I am practicing from her she is my wonderful coach, as singer and performer. Sarah sings in every range her voice is amazing! Her breathing is techniques are fabulous!!!!!!

  • Love this woman. How could anyone not love her singing. WHAT A VOICE.

  • DAMN!!! SHE SQUEEZED EVERY SINGLE OUNCE OF JUICE OUT OF THIS SONG!!! LOL!! AWESOME!!!!

  • I didnt even have a Valentine :(...lol. I am still loved. :)

  • I feel your pain, Sister... I have a "funny" Valentine, too...

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • perfection.

  • Sarah is so talented her voice takes the mind to another dimension. It's not quite able to be put in words, only in her voice. This gift comes once and isn't it wonderful to have the opportunity to listen to such a rare and beautiful sound.

  • @vodkamarie I totally get what you mean, I have been sitting here listening to this and when she does what she does, all I could do is say have mercy.....well sometimes I can't say a thing,,,,you feel me? yeah L.

  • This is the best version of this song -- bar none.

  • i just stumbled on to ms vaughn and wow...she is incredible! does anyone know if there is a copy of this version for sale? or online somewhere...i dont care how i get it..i need it.. so beautiful....literally brings me to tears it's so beautiful.

  • i just stumbled on to ms vaughn and wow...she is incredible! does anyone know if there is a copy of this version for sale? or online somewhere...i dont care how i get it..i need it.. so beautiful....literally brings me to tears it's so beautiful.

  • damn Ms Vaughan you are OUTSTANDING! ♥

  • total mastery of music

    a thrill to hear

    thank you for posting!

  • Happy Valentine's day

  • @vacuxamumuThat is not a mistake...you would have to know The Sassy in order to appreciate her vocal abilities.

  • She's singular, there's no similar, but, even her can make some mistakes, check on it 2:29 she's quite out of tune, which is perfect, shows how's human she was instead a screaming's machine gun.

  • Comment removed

  • @buffalmacco76 Ciao Bello, me dispiace dirlo, but she is really out of tune, but just for a second, which is totally normal, I'm not complain about that, but I'm a record producer, I have a very good ears, God bless you son.

  • @buffalmacco76 Che cazzo ci posso fare....Dio te benediga bello.

  • This IS music!!!!

  • The dynamic Sarah Vaughn, Sing!!! Wow!

  • DAMN!!! Love the Divas of old...

  • oh how i love her music!! wish i could have gone to one of her or nat king cole's concerts!!

  • Speechless...

  • To those that truly love...I salute you in all this mess we call life...

  • Sadly this may be one of her last performances from what I gathered from her Wikipedia bio. She died in April of 1990, and her Japanese concerts were her last. Given the Japanese subtitles, I imagine this is her in Japan.

  • @JIMBOOBER no, you're wrong. This performance at Satin Doll in Tokyo was in 1985. And Vhs of this was available only in 1990 (that's why 1990 appears on the video). Her last Japanese tour was in autumn 1989.

  • Her voice changed a lot with time. But she's still my favorite work of art.

  • una verdadera artista

  • nawevonada de graves más espectaculares...

  • Beautifulgirl2300...I totally agree with you...unfortunately...

  • :)......

  • Beautiful!!!

  • I grew up listening to Sarah, she was the best and there will never be another one like her. Today's singers can't sing period but sassy Sarah was out of this world

  • AHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! WOW!

  • I love her phrasing and the patient, slow pace she took. While she does vary the melody quite a bit, too much for the purist, for me her changes are totally within the spirit of the melody and the lyrics. Very inventive and exhilirating. And the lower range of her voice is hypnotic and unexpected.

  • She is amazing!

    Thanks for share it here!

  • One word. Art.

  • They were among us. As Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah...they remind us that planet earth is blessed with music and songs.

  • I appreciate what she brings to the song, however it's just too much for me.

  • 16 people will never know what it feels like to be a touched by this performance - its a pitty................

  • just lay me down to die and play this please, Lord have mercy! and that's all I have to say

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is perfect

  • This is the definitive Sarah song. Some others have done great versions, but let the world be advised; : "My Funny Valentine" belongs to Ms Sarah Vaughn.

  • Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, and Mahalia Jackson are the only three that can just bring the soul out of a song and make you believe every word they are saying...

  • @1joker88 Ok but you forgot Billie...

  • I'm speechless...first time hearing Ms. Vaughn's version. C'est magnifique!

  • I loved Sarah and with the recent death of Abbey Lincoln, look around the landscape.I've heard the best and rather than compromise I'll wait for the spirit of these giants to once again be heard.

  • DIVINA..FANTASTICA, ESPECTACULARMENTE BUENA !

  • You can grab the audio-mp3 of this video at fromvideotomp3 doht cohm.

  • Lord have mercy on these Singers of today..... they know not what they do!!!!!

  • @Beautifulgirl2300 I couldn't have said it better.

  • @Beautifulgirl2300 Indeed, it's a true cause for sorrow.

  • @Beautifulgirl2300

Amen! My sentiments exactly. They just don't have singers like this anymore. No where even close.

  • @Beautifulgirl2300 The best phrasing ever (next to Frank's), but here are some newer singers who get it: Melody Gardot, Rachell Ferrell, Helen Fischer, Norah Jones, and Melinda Doolittle had a nice version of this song on Idol. Didn't they used to call Vaughan "The Divine Sarah" before Bette Midler grabbed that title?

  • @79barkingspider Melinda Doolittle sang Chaka Khan's version. Check it out.

  • @Beautifulgirl2300 PREACH!!! AMEN AMEN AMEN

  • sing this song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • my funny valentine....complete classic...sarah vaughan....oh wow....priceless.... if 13 people dislike the video its because they need to gain a little jazz and or musical culture in their lives.

  • every time i listen your songs my dear dear divine you make me feel like heaven (sorry for my bad english)

  • wow..again this is why the music industry is so f'ed now. im almost certain the 13 people who disliked this person were waiting for her to show some cleavage or some dancers to come out and start dancing. or maybe they were waiting for the drum machine and a sample of beyonces "me, myself and i" to start playing. or maybe they were waiting for the rap collaboration with some rapper. its a shame that this generation has learned to look at music rather than listen to musicanship

  • Wow, I'm breathless. She sings the heck of that song. Like no one else.

  • Now we know where Ms. Anita Baker gets it from. Do you hear the similarities? They both have very unique, raw, and rare vocal talents.

  • This is great but really take a listen to her singing Maria from West Side Story. I accept those 13 who said thumps down. This is not her best performance but her worse (which this is not) would make her still one of the top ten singers since human hearing!

  • This is lovely, never heard Sarah Vaughan version of this song.

  • Ella Fitzgerald said "We lost the greatest voice"

    On of my favorite singers.

  • WOW, WOW, WOW...speechless. Such awesome talent...She was surely blessed

  • like a bird

  • I grew up listening to Sarah Vaughn, as my parents loved her voice. I was fortunate enough to see her in concert when I was young and it was the first time I shed a tear when watching a performance. I prefer her work in the later years, from the late 70's up to her death, when her voice got deeper and she became more of a stylist. She was, quite simply, one of the best vocalists ever. Thank you for posting this.

  • Sarah was not only a GREAT singer, she was what was considered a song stylist, she always put her twist on it. She was an interpreter of song. So if you want someone to sing the song exactly the way it was written, you got the wrong person. And that is what most of us love about Sarah. Not just her voice, but her artistry as well. Her taIent was too big to be contained on a page. She painted pictures everytime she sang a song, and even if it was the same song no two were exactly alike.

  • I need to buy this video. DVD, BluRay, VHS, whatever. I've been looking for it for a few years already, does anyone know what I should be looking for? A link to an online store maybe? thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • HOWL!

  • @moroney1 That's because gay men try singing like her ;-))

  • I love how husky and rich her voice became as she got older; She was magnificent when she was young, but I love her range during her later years. She was my mother's favorite, and she was a talented vocalist in her own right.

  • you'd have to kill yourself after that performance!!!! No coins back Please!!

  • Do you suppose some people hit the dislike button just for the sake of it or are there really 8 totally tone deaf, tasteless people out there?

  • @matrags There are people who say "Michael Jackson couldn't dance." So yeah, I think they hit the button just to be "different". In this case, "different" means "obnoxious"

  • @matrags Clearly those who would think Soulja boy is a musical savant

  • @matrags I believe in their haste they hit the wrong button! Those who would dislike this video don't visit! But, I might be a bit naive.

  • @matrags

I would bet these people have absolutely no comprehension or music intellect whatsoever...

  • @matrags Why everybody here on yotube cares about people who hit "dislike" button. It is not your business and does not take anything from you. Just enjoy ..

  • @violinoamore By the same logic why then do you care about those people who dislike the dislikers? We could go on couldn't we but like you said let's just enjoy the music.

  • @matrags or they can be insecure haters. lol. Best version I've ever heard.

  • sweet music! thanks for sharing this with the rest of us!!!

  • No one sings My Funny Valentine like Sarah. I loved to imitate her. She taught me how to sing.
