  • I remember when this was released,it was considered pretty radical to sing-the things that your liable to read in the bible aint necessarilyso.Shocking!Remember, you couldnt play footy on Sunday (well theVFA kicked on but that was yrs later!) and the shops shut, sat midday.Sunday was for church and a drive in the Valiant .

  • Love the song.

  • Kick back old Roo.. like this music.. so glad I was a child of the 60's, got to hear this on 3AK in primary school

  • I like this version and I've heard most of them....Thank you MrLions49 (Raymond) for sending it to me and thank you A.O. for posting it..phyllis

  • Normie is awsome, anyone who says other wise is a dick (:

  • I agree keep the old Aussie artists alive and singin mate....its all about a thing called "mateship" where we stuck together and watch out for each other..sadly I beieve what is known as "mateship" (as we knew it..) is dyin out. So is "family" for that matter!

  • Keep up the great work Auusie..and KEEP posting the Kanga with a schooner..adds to the EXCELLENCE...cripes! the world of twenty-ten is full of fun destroying galahs...logicwtfhead???..try dickhead in the grand style of a Graham Kennedy, Odd Angry Shot type of summation!! well done Aussie!!

  • Hey AussieOldies, totally dig where you're at. Great stuff, keep it up!!! Cheers

  • If Julie Zemiro ever asks me, this is the first record I ever bought. :D

  • Brilliant song and one occasion where the cover is, in my opinion, better than the original Porgy and Bess recording. First time I heard this, I stopped as well. I still do.

Why this video has been so flagrantly flavoured with Australian patriotism is beyond me. I put it to AussieOldies and you, whoever you are reading this - music, like the air which circulates the globe, knows no national boundaries.

  • My name is John LHLH ,the whole point of my channel is to try and keep the music of oldies Australian artists alive ,much of which is very hard to find. The kangaroo is merely a recognisable symbol that represents the type of music on my channel .This layed back Roo is on all my videos. Lighten up!!

  • John,

Pleased to meet you. My comment, looking back on it, was a little heavy. I apologise if I caused offence. It was not my intention to do so.

In the interests of clarity, I was commenting on this particular video. I have not seen any others on your channel. While I do have objections to the presentation, I respect your right to it. Thanks for posting the song. I particularly enjoyed the video description quoting Normie Rowe.

    Regards,

    Tom.

  • @AussieOldies Screw the idiots. I'm completely comfortable with the roo as symbol for 'Aussie'. Most of us (Aussies) are the either the direct progeny of other cultures or first/second (or merely a few generational) product of other cultures. To criticize on this puerile level is to refute the concept of being a part of a Nation-State. Within capitalist society, we have to draw on signifiers in order to draw on an understanding of 'culture'. We have to draw on symbolism to make cultural sense.

  • @irynski Thanks Harpy , maybe I should do a big Roo song this Wednesday (Australia day)

  • @AussieOldies Can't see the big roo, John. Bit disappointed... however, I followed Sam Kekovich's advice and ate a lamb (you can't get more Aussie than the K-man). Admittedly, eating it was a little antithetical for me (having been a vegetarian for 35 years) but, just to show my national pride I didn't even cook it: just dolloped some White Crow over the poor bugger and chewed away despite the bleating. Coughing up wool-balls today... but it was worth it!

  • @AussieOldies I agree keep the old Aussie artists alive and singin mate....its all about a thing called "mateship" where we stuck together and watch out for each other..sadly I beieve what is known as "mateship" (as we knew it..) is dyin out. So is "family" for that matter! The Roo stays Put right?

  • this was one of his popular songs - but weren't they all.
