  • I have loved Tony Martin's voice through the years. I just watched Ziegfield Girl on TMC again and enjoyed seeing him and hearing him sing.

  • HAPPY 99TH BIRTHDAY DEAR T........... YOU REMAIN IN THE THOUGHTS OF MANY AND KEPT HERE LOVINGLY AT YOUTUBE WITH ADMIRATION FOR YOUR WONDERFUL TALENT AND FOR NEW GENERATIONS TO DISCOVER YOU AND KNOW THAT ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA THERE WAS EXTRAORDINARY AND UNIQUE TALENT. CHEERS!

  • I'M HAPPY TO SEE ALL THE WONDERFUL REPORTS OF THOSE WHO KNOW HOW GOOD TONY MARTIN IS, AND ALSO THAT THEY KNOW AND REMEMBER DENNIS MORGAN - THE MUSIC OF "YESTERYEAR" IS SO BEAUTIFUL, THANK YOU FOR POSTING SO MANY ARTISTS WHO CAN REALLY SING.

  • Ah Tony...... Christmas day he will be 98. I knew him in the late 50's and early 60's. My mother lived across the street from he and Cyd on Wilshire Blvd. until her death 4 years ago. He was an impeccable dresser and gentleman. That word like the examples have all but ceased to exist in our present society. He was wonderful in Ziegfeld Girl.... it was a stretch of imagination that Gorgeous Hedy Lamarr left him to return to her not so interesting husband :-) Thank you for this.

  • It's funny...I keep learning all these Jazz songs on guitar and never know that there are also lyrics to everyone of the....song like this one and Autum Leaves, Blue Bossa, The Girl From Impanema, etc. Music is the greatest gift mankind has ever come up with....and being about to make it...no matter the level....is the greatest joy of all....or at least in the top 5!

  • @SteelStringDiva And Autumn Leaves is actually an original French song Les Feuilles Mortes --- literally translated "the dead leaves" it is a beautiful melody and the French lyrics are very different meaning.

  • He did sing this song sooo beautifully, but, listen to Frank Sinatra's version. Very good as well.

  • I love the control he has on the last couple of phrases.

  • Back in those days, when I was young, singers had good voices.

I met Tony and his wife of 60 years Cyd Charisse in the 1980s in

Hollywood. She was in her 60s and still looked slim and lovely.

They were married for 60 years.

    Thanks for the great post.

  • ever notice about "till clouds go by" film. that he is older than all other main performers except van heflin. but managed to outlive them all except for angela lansbury!!!!

  • Wow he really looks like Victor Mature! They could be brothers!

  • Tony is 98 on Xmas Day 2010 and still performing.

  • dreamy...sigh

  • What a beautiful performance, true legato singing of this by a wonderful artist! One of the greatest songs of the American Songbook. This remains THE classic performance.

  • Oh yeah!! WHAT A VOICE!! Soon he´s 97 an still wonderful! :-)

  • In 1940 Tony performed this song with Mr.Kern at a lconcert celebrating ASCAP's 25th anniversary in San Francisco. Kern, George M. Cohan, W.C. Handy, Harry Warren, Jimmy Monaco, Carrie Jacobs Bond band almost every great composers you could imagine perfomed 2 songs each. Johnny Mercer, Judy Garland, and many others sang, but it was Tony Martin who was the only performer who did a encore and since Kern only brought two songs with him, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "All The Things You Are".

  • A very beautiful song delivered in the ways of old...........disciplined, yet effortless, a timeless classic

  • Looking back...I didn't need a DJ to tell me who was singing this. I knew within the first 4 notes. The same of course, could be said of vocalists such as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Vaughn Monroe, Nat KIng Cole, and the list goes on. What you have posted is now part of a memorable American history.

  • Thank you BingandNelsonFan---Thank you for posting this gem! Love his operatic-trained voice, and if anyone here ever can find Tony singing "I'm Stepping Out With a Memory Tonight,"----I've bought so many CD's on Amazon and eBay, and the early Tony compilations have every song, BUT the one I listed above. If anyone can post it, or know of a CD it appears on, PLEASE post or put any info about it---THANK YOU in advance...and thanks BingandNelsonFan!

  • Tony is one of the best vocalists..EVER! I've never heard anything he's sung that I didn't like!

  • My childhood too. My father was a singer and sounded a lot like Tony Martin. And he was one of my dad's favorite singers. I just love that rich sound and phrasing. Beautiful.

  • Tremendous voice. Beautiful melody and lyrics. They don't make 'em like this any more.

  • He had the voice of velvet and every word was understood...truly a very special voice and person! Anita Darian

  • The very best of Jerome Kern//// This from the movie Till the Clouds Roll By. Oneof my favorite movies....

  • You can also find it in the beatiful film Mrs Henderson. Bye.

  • The biopic of the wonderful Jerome Kern.

2010 Marks the 125th anniversary of Mr. Kern's birth, lest you are interested.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  • The very best of Jerome Kern. I just love this song. Coudl be use to a girl or boy . Just wonderful/// from the movie Till the Clouds Roll By............

  • If this doesnt give you goose bumps nothing will. Just wonderful .Jerome Kern at his best... Movie is -Till the Clouds Roll By.....

  • His voice was wonderful and the best ... And this song was wonderful. This movie showed the talent of many a star.....thanks for posting...

  • I've always loved his voice, a velvety bel canto...this operatic style of singing was disappearing when he was recording. I adore his delivery, his perfect diction and how romantic and dashing he looks in his white suit!! Thank you so much for sharing this rare gem on here!!

  • @Pacabelle

You are very right, it IS a bel canto placement, the sound is on the mask and it is round and resonant.

  • Oh, WOW! This song . . . it takes me back to my childhood! Isn't he brilliant. No one else can do this song like Tony Martin. Thanks for posting!

  • Absolutely. I agree, no one else can sing it like him, and it does take me back to my childhood too! You and I have a lot in common --- it's almost like we're twins! ;)

  • @BingandNelsonFan Triplets maybe ? Any room for me as I am back in a golden age of lovely personalities and songsters ...Tony, Vic Damone, Perry Como, Patti Page just like you both.

  • @Petroskeyful Great! We love to "meet" others who enjoy this type of music (seproductionsyt is really my twin, actually!). We're really keen on the 1930s and 1940s music, to name a few: Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nelson Eddy, Deanna Durbin, Tony Martin, Hoagy Carmichael, Dennis Morgan, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald . . . the list goes on and on! :)

  • @BingandNelsonFan can you count me in? :) it's because of my dad that I learned to appreciate these songs. sometimes I listen to songs from the 1930s to the 1970s more than I listen to the songs of my generation! :)
