Everyone that thinks the E30 had a rolling start on both races are idiots. You can clearly see he is at a standstill for almost a full second from 0:11 - 0:12 before launching. He's creeping up the the line prior to staging to pre load the drive train with the e-brake as you can clearly see. Common practice on a manual to avoid breakage.

this. the IX was properly lined up as indicated by the tree and he also didn't jump as indicated by the tree (a red light would be on below the green light if he jumped). AWD just gives a huge advantage on launch.

The IX never had a rolling start. In order for the tree to light, he needs to hit an infrared sensor to start the 2nd set of yellows.....Once both cars do that, the greens go and off they race.....KNOW your shit BEFORE you talk. Also, you honestly have doubts that a turbo E30 with all wheel drive could beat a E36 M3? The E36 has 240h from the engine, and most dyno results from turbo E30's are 250+ from the wheels. Not the mention the E30 had racing slicks and was putting power down to all 4 wheels, AND it's hundreds of lbs lighter.

Now if it had been a race with curves, the M3 would have had a chance.

SInce The boys at BMW made the car with a 37 front 63 rear torque split, under full acceleration grunt all the power would be put down evenly. That was i guess when the car was untouched. With a turbo IX you'd need a much stronger center diff and chain to the front diff to keep it that same ratio. IT just simply couldnt handle it.

AFAIK, M3's have always been RWD.

AWD also won't "kill RWD off the line anyday", not atleast on a fair comparison.

Launching from a standstill, the weight of the car shifts to the rear wheels, where RWD's send all of their power.

RWD's are often best in a straight line.

When the 2 rear wheels are spinning, you loose some of your power but 4 wheels won't spin that easy.

No spinning has nothing to do with being AWD. Spinning the wheels is to do with inertia and impulse. The most sudden the jolt of power is through the drive train, the more likely the wheels are going to break traction and spin.

If the tyres are good enough, and the power is applied more gradually (not instantly, in the case of a clutch dump), you will not get wheel spin.

If you've seen serious drag cars, with monster drag slicks, they do not spin (on a good launch).

AWD cars will often be better at cornering, because the power to the front wheels will be pulling the front end through the corners.

RWD cars are better in a straight line for launching as the weight is shifted towards the rear, onto the rear wheels. The added weight over the rear axle helps gain more traction on a launch.

if you compared this to a FWD car where the weight will shifts off the front tyres, and tends to cause wheel spin on the front.
