The tour group that I was part of (in '07) spent a little time there on our way to Philly. I'm grateful it 's been preserved. And this from a Yankees fan!
lthough I am a diehard Cleveland fan and usually hate Pittsburgh anything, I have to admit that they did an amazing job preserving this great old park. Cleveland has a historical marker for the Tribe's old home, League Park, and the oustide of the first base stands and the original ticket office still stand today. But it's in a horrible neighborhood and it's almost too risky to go stand on the old mound where Cy Young once pitched and the Babe hit his 500th HR. I wish it was more...
...like this where it's in a safe area and is well kept. The fact that the university owns the property obviously helps out alot. The home plate kept in the floot of one of the buildings is awesome. I plan on making a trip to see it one day.
I'm a diehard Tribe fan too. I kind of both agree and disagree about this though. On one hand, the Forbes Field wall is in a nice area and everything, but that's all there is of it. Most the field is covered by the college hall.
I know League Park is in a bad neighborhood, but I like that the actual field and ticket booth and everything is still there.
I don't know if you did go there, but if not you should. It really is a cool experience to walk there imagining what it was like years ago.
The lights used for night games at Forbes Field were bought by the borough of Ellwood City and are still used today to light-up their high school football games at Helling Stadium in Ellwood.
Great video! Thanks for posting. I can't believe they had the flag pole and batting cage 'in play'! It is great that they kept part of the old park. I heard they will mark homeplate when they knock down Shea for the new ballpark. Thanks again!
I was part of a tour group back in '07 and we all got a big kick out of seeing the wall before heading out to Philly.

why did they tear it down??
Cooley24485 11 months ago
@Cooley24485 It was done because of some construction by the University back in '73 or '74. At least Home Plate is still where it always was.

This is cool. Was the 457 marker the deepest part of the ballpark in straight-away centerfield? Good job.

Thanks, I was just reading about what's left of the wall and it was great to actually get to see a video of it.

Thanks for that...old ball parks are great, and I'm glad that Pittsburgh kept part of this one alive.
