if you simply discharge a capacitor with a short wire it explodes. what really happens? the wire turns into gas rapidly? or this happens on the edge and the other piece just fly away?
I think it's not the current only... Current flowing must be generating hydrogen and oxygen, while the voltage is sufficient to jump the gap , and ignite the gaseous mixture. Hydrogen + oxygen detonates and creates a shockwave destroying your container...
It sounded - and looked - like you injected brief high voltage pulses into your test subjects. How long was each pulse, and what were the voltage increments?
Wonderful things happen with a toy train transformer (12VAC). Connect a non-LED diode like a 1N34, hmmm ramp up to 120mph (full speed) diode lit up orange for a few seconds (a LED!) then blackens and smokes. Green plastic cylinder capacitors, interesting, few secs, bubbles at the top then vents... 3-legged transistors no fun, 2N2222 just popped its top off in an instant. Resistors, just smokers. Electrolytics were fun, vented good.
@RODALCO2007 - Interesting idea :-) I still have that train transformer, a digital camera that can do videos, and plenty of old caps (but not the green ones). I've got a lemon Panasonic 50" plasma TV with bad caps on its power board, so I'll get some extra parts when I order, need to get some regular diodes and light them up ;-)
It's a good thing I don't have any electronics to play with, or else I would probably explode an LED and hurt myself, because I do not understand electronics.
@RODALCO2007 actually it's not smoke, it's hydrogen and oxygen! it's called electrolysis which is the decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen gas due to an electric current being passed through the water, the equations is 2 H2O(l) → 2 H2(g) + O2(g).
did you know that if you get a spring submerge it and charge with 125 volts it will boil the water i did it once and made a kettel out of it make sure it is fairly long e.g one from an old hoover the brush spring from the motor trust me it ammmazing :D
Did the camera get water at 0:16? Went really noisy after that. Btw, did any of the LED's smell like hydrochloric acid? Few years ago i zapped a small red LED with my flyback HV and the smell was terrible, made me open the window instantly.
Wow! that's really powerful!

@jk037 Voltage pulse was about 1 second. increments steps of 100 Volts at the time. most shots were at around 1.5 kV and over

curious what effect this has on the water structure..was the same water used with differnt LEDs?

@juicyghu Same water or it was topped up after a minor spill except when the container blew up.

why does it blow up twice? (sometimes 3 times)
hilers72652 6 months ago
@hilers72652 That is the high voltage spark jumping across the gap of the led's terminals.

what type of power supply were you using
HDXFH 1 year ago
@HDXFH A variable DC supply to be used for cable faults.
in steps of 100 Volts up to 4 kV at about 100 Amps discharge.

@dtvjho Cool !! Please make some video's next time so we can all enjoy the action.
A lot of electronics are fun and if not over volted too much they last longer and smoke longer as well.

even the old dodgy TV caps will blow out nicely when connected to the 240 Volts mains.

I grew up in Philly. A subway-surface trolley is having problems getting uphill with ice on the wire.

Invisibrah 1 year ago
@Invisibrah A LED can even explode from a 9 Volts battery when no series resistor is inserted.
It is often a good idea to use safety goggles during experiments, especially when testing.

@RODALCO2007 It'd be interesting to see a videotape of that. 9V blowing LED :)

am i crazy or i see smoke underwater?!
vanjastanic 1 year ago
@vanjastanic Correct ! the led under stress oozes out some smoke, probably the epoxy deteriorating under the High Voltage surge.
RODALCO2007 1 year ago
@RODALCO2007 actually it's not smoke, it's hydrogen and oxygen! it's called electrolysis which is the decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen gas due to an electric current being passed through the water, the equations is 2 H2O(l) → 2 H2(g) + O2(g).
charmio 1 year ago
@vanjastanic My guess would be that the high voltage is splitting the water into hydrogen and oxygen. The bubbles are reall small so appear as smoke.

at 0:16 the explosion messes up ur camera's mic...and what is the clunk clunk everytime he hits the switch??? 5* if you reply!!! and lol at "whoops"
bentboybbz 1 year ago
That is the surge generator ( Thumper ) discharging the high voltage capacitors into the LED under test.
You are correct some water came into the mike.
RODALCO2007 1 year ago
Why does it explode? The junction sure gets destroyed before 1kV...
Pudersepp 2 years ago
The heat of the expanding LED die, when the current surge flows through the LED makes the plastic case expand rapidly and hence blow apart.

i made an led blow up like that with 12 volts, why the high voltage?
Dean129012 2 years ago
Just see if it created a different effect.
I had the cable fault surge generator at home over the weekend.
As you already proved, LED's do blow up at 12 Volts and excessive current.

What type of power supply are you using?
Coolkeys2009 2 years ago
a Baua portable surge generator.
Normally used for low voltage cable faults.
RODALCO2007 2 years ago
The LED died already at the beginning. The 1.7 kV was basically the flashover voltage between the terminals of the LED.
RODALCO2007 2 years ago
I like the one that raised the container, and the last one put up a fight to 1.7kv, not bad for an led!
