Neil Young has no soul, blah blah, he has one good song and the only reason it sounds soulful is because he's straining to hit the notes and get in key.
Neil Young has been the most innovative, talented, and diverse artist in the entire history of Rock and Roll. From his early days with Buffalo Springfield through the Acid Rock Age, Folk Rock Age and Country Rock Genre, Neil Young has done it all and excelled. I have more of Neil's Music on Vinyl, Cassette, and now CD than any other music. I have three live performances on CD - Berlin, Live Rust, and Heart of Gold. All three are different from each other, but all are excellent. Neil Rocks.
Neil Young is such a fantastic song writer, he tried to experiment with electronic music in Trans and ... well, the result is not so impressive. He should have left synths to the experts and focus on his own magnificent style.
A friend of mine just pointed me to this album. I was absolutely amazed! I'd been a Neil fan way way back in the day, but I don't remember even hearing any of this album back in the 80's. I think this is f'ing great stuff and shows the absolute genius of Neil Young.
William Blake: "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thru chinks of his cavern."
Dude I wonder how pissed his record company was when he brought them this. They probably wanted another "Down By The River" or something. Thank god he did this though it's amazing and broke down what a "Rock" band could do.
Well, considering the record company eventually sued Neil, so that should answer your question. After this record, he gave them a rockabilly album, then a country album, and I think they eventually got sick of him delivering what they expected. They probably wanted a Crazy Horse record or something like Harvest, and Neil was just doing his thing, trying out different styles of music and not worry about what the fans would think.
I haven't heard any "Trans" era Neil in years. Not my favorite Neil style music, but hey...its Neil. I saw him on this tour in Athens Ohio in early 1983. My wife was 7months pregnant at the time with our son. He is a musician & has always loved music....maybe because he heard Neil Young in utero?
There are two kinds of music: there is Neil Young and there is the rest. Check out Rapid Transit, which (in a totally different way by the way) also is totally abnormal...
I saw this on the "Neil Young and Crazy Horse in a Rusted Out Garage" tour for the Landing on Water tour. He did this and Sample & Hold back to back. Amazing moment!
@AnalogVocoder1 Actually I just found-out from 'response007' and I verified by checking my copy of Dave Tompkin's 'How to Wreck a Nice Beach' that this IS INDEED the Sennheiser Vocoder VSM201 and NOT the Moog 16-Channel MBVO 327A Vocoder!!!!

When I see the light
I know I'm more than just a number.
And I stand before you
Or else we just don't see the other

Fuck this is so good.
It is a pity it is buried under so much of Neil's other work. I love how Neil has done it his own way all his life. So inspiring.

He finished with this when I saw him in Buffalo. Half the crowd booed him. That's when I knew he was the greatest.
