  • Might not really be necessary, but putting an opaque background behind the text might aid in readability for scenes where there's something white in the movie.

    It's readable as is, just mean, in general.

  • Unfortunately that is not possible. Subtitles work with a very slow (even if highly optimized) pixel impression routine, so filling the background with some opaque layer would make it excessively slow.

  • ah, I see.

    And using an outline would involve moving from a monochrome scheme to one which involves at least 2 bits per pixel, and such, so, very slow as well.

  • The font is actually using 2 bpp. It's basically a copy of the regular 4 color font used for dialogues, with the same 3D shadow.
