Doesn't the fact that they are solely blood drinkers, disease carriers and the fact they are completely useless tell us this is just proof that Humankind would be well served to eradiate all species of mosquito. If only there were some way to create a natural virus or bacteria which would affect only mosquitos and intentionally infect humanity with it such that any mosquito who feeds on us would die (always female...males consume tree saps). Their role as a "food supply" is negligible.

@OkamsRazer They remove bacteria and algae from rocks and water too. Believe it or not, they play an important role just because they're a food source. It piss you off if your favorite food was simply taken off of the market, wouldn't it? Viruses have been used to stem animal populations before, though. In the 1950's, the European Rabbit population of Australia was way too high so they introduced the disease myxomatosis because it affected them and only them. Not as advance as what you proposed.

@KornwallisTV yes they do have multiple functions but nothing that couldn't be replaced in time with another member of the ecosystem. They simply serve no irreplacable purpose as far as I can see. I am strong support of responsibile ecology, preservation of endangered species etc but when a species is this harmful to human beings then we should eradicate the threat.

@KornwallisTV one easy way to eliminate the mosquito population is to intentionaly infect all human beings with a virus or bacterium which is predatory on mosquitos. Make our blood toxic to their consumption and since the elephantitis, west nile virus, malaria, encephalitis, and pretty much every other "human" disease they carry aren't transferrable to other lifeforms but since we are such an abundant food supply for mosquitos it would annihilate their population given enough time.

Killing all of them would be a seemingly unobtainable feat. There's an estimate of 1,000,000,000,000,000 in a small state, let alone an entire country.
