Great video - the containers that are piggy-backed - do you know if they are bolted together or do they rely on the weight of the container from falling off round bends? In the UK our very restrictive loading gauge does not permit piggy-backing we had an incident admittedly the containers were empty but severe winds blew three containers off a freight train - the containers locate on to lugs of the transporters
I was on the northbound Coast Starlight a couple years ago when we hit a vehicle at a crossing near Santa Clara at about 80mph. It took close to a half mile to stop. Yes, it was fatal.
Not for a long time have I watched your clips. Unfortunately. I was on the homepage of Kalama, Washington, and saw, thats a pretty nice small town. Thats a great and also heavy Railway traffic there. I enjoyed your vid so much. And also nice to see, that our Freight Trains here in Germany have sometimes the same length as your Freight Trains. So I wish all Railway Fans still a lot of fun of our hobby. And at last, I hope to see (one day), our High Speed Trains zoom off in America.
@maineboy1979 reckon that is the pneumatics of the brake pressure being applied and released, Sound is very similar to our passenger trains In the UK. The brakes are applied to each car from the car's own brake pressure reservoir, the degree of pressure being controlled by the driver and electronic gizzmos and anti-brake-lock (wheel skid) systems etc, plus fail safe system should the cars separate
@NapierNimbus - thanks for the info. Amtrak uses a different type of passenger car on the east coast (where I'm from) and they sound completely different than those Cascades cars, so I was curious. Thanks again.
I saw a vid from a trainspotter guy in the UK and not only did he call out the numbers of the locos but he also did it for each and every freight car...now I can understand locos but freight cars? that's a bit too much,...btw, nice video here :)
Why were all these trains so short?

@FE511bhs All told if I did not edited the footage there would have been about 45 minutes worth of footage.

How long would it take for a train like that to brake to a halt in an emergency?
KINGANDCASTLE 2 years ago
My estimation would be a half mile for the Amtrak, and at least a mile to 1 and 1/4 miles for the freight trains.

What are those funky noises made by the Cascades train when it came to a stop? In sounds like a dog's squeak toy.
maineboy1979 2 years ago
Best I can tell that was the trains braking system.
