There is a wonderful documentary made of the leaking dams; The abutments leak because of the pressure and the separation of the canyons. Some dam retention levels have been lowered to take the pressure off the dams. Dams dont topple when they fail they fail foot outward i.e. they fall backward because of the pressure on the heel.
