this was de first rally of the season and probably the best. im steering and that engine also has a winch. it is the contractors mclaren model as sometime within its working days it was fitted with a higher second gear so it would travel faster on long stretches of road as it spent most of it working life hauling cotton across australia.
@thecelticsteamer it has been noted in the some rally programmes as being a contractors model. this is totally incorrect as the engine has none of the features of a contractors model traction engine which are generally 1.solid flywheel 2. front and rear springing 3. 6ft6inch+ rear wheels. 4. flywheel brake 5. side motion covers. 5. coalbox extension.the gear ratios for this engine is normal for a traction engine of this size and era almost all traction engines are fitted with a winch as standard
@ransomes1936 Am I right in thinking that the three trailing engines were left in gear with the brakes on? She seems to be applying a lot of power here for a load of just 3 traction engines freewheeling. I've seen a single cylinder engine much smaller than this one pulling 7 traction engines applying much less effort.
@hiyadroogs Hi there how are you! Yes it looks like nos. one and three engines have been left in gear to give a little extra rolling resistance. I wondered if you'd seen 'Steam Traction Engine Vs Diesel Tractors Tug Of War ' on Youtube. It features a Rumely set against two tractors, worth a look, but all paritcipants are somewhat hampered by the muddy conditions.
@pjmetco Hi bud. Yes, I've seen the tug of war with traction engine vs tractors. Did you notice here at 1:05 that the trailing engine's back wheels are locked solid? Check out also this same McClaren pulling a tractor pulling resistance sledge in the suggestions panel to the right. She pulls a wheelie as she completes a full pull! Regards, John.

Super video you can almost smell the smoke and the hot oil.
I visited this rally a few years ago when it was held at St. Patricks it was great.
