my friend you have told me a lot about my lovely bike, and 4 that i thank you very much. I will ask you this favor, as i see that you know a lot, could you please see this video? everybody here ask me to change my fuel bomb but mechanics here in argentina are notvery trustfull , in this video you can see exactly my problem, any help will be thanx a lot from argentina
@BANGITSHarry Sorry I don't have any direct experience with that particular bike, however, most modern 125's from the big 4 are very robust so it's generally a matter of stying preference.
One thing to be watch, as with all is corrosion on chrome and the like, the smaller machines tend to get ridden year round and in all weathers and can suffer accordingly so check carefully for corrosion on exhausts and suspension components if buying second hand.
@XB0XFR34K It's a perfect first bike, easy to handle, powerful enough to cruise at a comfortable speed and carry a passenger or luggage, not so powerful you'll easily get yourself into trouble, hope this helps.
@spidiq8 thanks for the reply but im sort of stuck between this and the 750. i'll be buying during the summer so i have plenty of time. the only reason im in a pickle here is because i think this one is the best one for me but there is a 750 virago for sale on craigslist for 800 while this one is 1200....
@XB0XFR34K Either or to be honest, even the 1100 isn't particularly heavy, Are you in the US? Can you ride a bike of this capacity at 15, (curious as you can't ride on the road at 15 in the UK, only a moped, (50cc) at 16 and restricted to a 125 at 17 till you've passed your test.
They're all very low centre of gravity and accordingly handle well and predictably, don't let the price alone dictate your choice, check the bikes themselves and base your choice on condition.
@spidiq8 yes sorry i forgot to include im in the US. here in virginia you can get a bike permit at 15 and 6 months, and as long as you hold a permit for 90 days you can apply for your license. If it werent price wise i'd definately go for the 535, but since it is an issue im basically stuck on the 750.

@ylism It is a big negative point for me, i'm used to sportbike tanks you have to fill every 150 miles too but the ones on these are a joke if you live anywhere with big gaps between filling stations.
I love the look of them though and it was very nice to ride.
@spidiq8 It's good thing where I live, That gas stations are just about everywhere. at lest every 5 miles or so. Still wold get old having to stop so much. More so when riding with other, and they all have bigger tank's. I think you know what I saying. Take care, yl
Thanks for the review. I just got a '95 xvs 535 with only 8500 certified miles. I was wondering how much the MPG was. I agree with all your considerations. Great bike but does feel a little cramped and I'm only 5' 8".
@charlie52804 It's fine, see other comments, it's all relative, some feel cramped on anything but a GS1000, some 6ft+ riders say it's not a problem, you can get extended pegs aftermarket for them anyway if you need more legroom
@wheresmyspanner Thankyou, glad you found it useful. I know what you mean, I remember watching a virago review before I did this which consisted of someone thrashing the pants off one while trying to talk with only wind noise coming through.
Hello, great review. I was just wondering what the best way to keep the rust off these cruisers is? I've just bought a 2002 marauder 125 and I'm a little worried about the rust taking over. It's dry stored every night but in the day it sits in a car park and often gets exposed to the elements, at the moment I'm cleaning it wuith soapy water every time it gets wet but I'm not sure if there is an easier way? I tried covers and they don't seem to protect against anymore than drizzle. Thanks...
@rimfa123 Covers vary greatly in quality and most will still get condensation underneatht them. The main thing is keeping the road salt off them in winter, hose down with cold water after using on salted roads if you commute in wintertime, keep all chrome parts and exposed metal covered in WD40 or ACF50 if you feel more flush, use a WD soaked rag and wipe everything over, it does eventually come off but protects it.
@spidiq8 Thanks alot, I'll give it a go tomorrow. It makes sense that as long as the rainwater is washed off and the chrome dried properly, soap doesn't matter, I haven't been riding long so I've got a lot to learn but thanks to people like you I'm getting there. Cheers again.
@TheSabreenR Can't say about the resell value in Sri Lanka, in the UK, they hold their value very well.
No direct experience of the 250 but they're great engines, if the carbs are side mounted like the 535, check for perished carburettor diaphragms, (it won't run right or pull if they're gone), very good bike, don't listen to the gossip unless they can back it up with facts figures and real life experience, everyone whos said anything negative to me about them has no experience themselves
@TheSabreenR My first bike was a 1991 XV 250 Virago. I have ridden it almost problem free for two years. The engine is actually very smooth and reliable. The only problem I had is that the carburettor would freeze up during winter, but I think that won't be a problem in Sri Lanka ;-)
As a beginners bike, the 250 Virago is great. I had lots of fun. Note that the Honda CMX Rebel is also a very good buy.
I bought the bike last sunday, had some minor repairs like brakes, lights. Gotta agree its an amazing beginners bikes, I was so afraid of taking corner turns on bigger bikes but this is so smooth. Also the sound is awesome!
@TheSabreenR if you still care.... i bought a 250cc for myself a few years ago... it`s great! the original engine is totally reliable and durable... mine runs since 55000km ..... but the most awesome thing about that bike: no problems with rust! not even once!
I know a guy thats selling a 1996 Virago XV 535 for $1000. He says the same thing about it that a lot of posters here has said. The battery is dead and it now clicks whenever he tries to start it. From reading the responses posted here, I now have a gereral idea of how to troubleshoot it and if all goes well. I'm ging to buy it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this review. It was indeed VERY helpful!
@horta85 I can't help on that one unfortunately as mine is long ago sold so can't check it for you.
Think I have a manual on PDF around somewhere, if I find it i'll see what it tells me, sorry I can't give you a definitive answer now.
If it's blowing everytime you turn on the ignition, i'd say you have a short circuit somewhere, I had something similar on my Z650, it transpired it was an instrument light bulb holder which was shorting across itself as the bulb had blown and been removed.
@ONLYreggaebass Early models have a plastic dummy tank, all models have a fuel tank under the seat, early ones fill up with a cap under the seat, later models have the underseat tank PLUS this top supplementary tank, filling is done through the top tank.
Great Video! I just got one. But been having problems with it staying on. I always have to jump start it, I'm guessing it may be one of the fuses? I heard electrical issues are very common on the virago. Any clues would help! Thanks
@horta85 Check the battery charge and condition with a voltmeter and check the battery terminals, make sure they're clean and tight, some use brass adapters to change the side bolt config to a top bolt config, if these are on, either bin them and bolt directly to the side plates or fasten them using a dab of threadlock, same with the top ones as the V configuration engine can vibrate more than an inline four and loosen the terminals.
Otherwise the electrical system on these is rock solid.
@spidiq8 lol i was saying that i appreciate your use of the imperial-unit system, and that most European reviewers usually use the metric system. which living in the US is a little hard to figure out right-off-the-top-of-my-head :)
What's impractical about it? Had you been born and raised in the UK it would be what you know and the Metric system would be alien to you. Many of us still think in distances and measurements as feet and inches.
Start talking millimetres, metres and litres / KM to a British person and we'd be saying why use such an impractical system?
I have an imported xv400, the same as the xv535 but with a 400 engine, absolutely amazing bike, really comfortable and very easy to ride (I am 5,11). I think they are the best looking cruisers available and most of them have very low mileage. Worth every penny.
im 6,4 and the bikes fine to ride ive taken the bike out on tours and never had a problem plus its restricted i love it great first bike for anyone dont be put off becouse ppl recomend it to women lol
@masterknaster it depends on how much is leg and how much is body in the 5'8", I know of 6' + riders so you should manage just fine, best bet is to try one out.
@ONLYreggaebass Don't know if theres a direct replacement so options would be to remove the original and chop it, or measure it and trawl a breakers yard to find something that could be altered to fit
@spidiq8 Yes I see. Can't wait to try it out. There are a lot of Viragos on the market but I'm just not sure what I should look for. It is important for me that I don't have to run to the motoshop after 1000 km because something is broken. I'm not sure if 40.000 km on the speedometer would be too much....
@RedKitty13 Not at all, like any vehicle as long as it's been looked after and given oil and filter changes it'll be fine. If unsure take someone along with you to view bikes and get their opinion, neglect is pretty easy to spot on a naked bike as everything is visible so it's hard to accidentally buy a dog.
Bike engines in general are quite longlasting now, I have a BMW with 105,000 miles on the odometer and have had jap fours with 55,000 miles on them.
Just two quick questions though - I'm 6'1 and about 15 stone. Do you think I'd be too big for this bike? I currently have a XV250 and feel too big for it - what's the size difference between the two bikes?
@mjo0032 Typically on most V-Twins you'd have a shared Crankpin meaning both cylinders rise and fall at the same time, this balances the engine and at the same time is what gives most V-twins, (Harley especially) that distinctive potato, potato, potato tickover. However, not all V-twins are on a shared crankpin and to be quite honest I don't know if the Virago is but would suspect so, usually it's things like the Ducati and Moto Guzzi that differ.
@mjo0032 There should be timing marks on both the cam sprocket and flywheel, if you get the forward cylinder at the BTDC timing mark, check the piston is near the top of the stroke then place the cam and make sure both inlet and exhaust valves are closed on cylinder 1, this will be the compression stroke, hope this helps?
Just to say great review. Would you say the smaller fuel tank would hamper someone wanting to tour Britain on the bike? I was thinking about buying a virago 535.
@Scotvirago Not really, just as long as you're aware that you have a specific range and check your route for fuel stops, if necessary carry a 5L can in your luggage for the times you'll be in areas which are sparsely populated with filling stations, not many in the UK now. It would only be a minor annoyance if you were riding with someone with a typical 150 mile range before reserve
Now ivé bought myself a 535 from -95 and i love it :). Me and my father went out for a test drive and even though my bike is 25kw its amazingly strong, accelerates with 2 fullgrown men on 5th gear upphill on the freeway. It´s a perfect bike when you have my lenght´(1.67cm) and i think i´m going to enyoy this for many years to come, Now my prioroty is to get my license for MC :).
@Nubbpiraten You're welcome. That's great and I hope you really enjoy the bike, although not high in the BHP stakes they're very very torquey and immensely strong at pulling, you'll find it will pull cleanly from 30mph in top gear riding solo without feeling like it struggles, if you plan long journeys i'd recommend low bars (if you have the high bars) and a flyscreen to keep off the wind on the motorways, (highways?)
Get some videos of your bike up for everyone to enjoy!
Thanx, i allready have a flyscreen :). motorway,/highway/freeway it get your point, in sweden we say motorväg (motorway) :). I will probably upload a video later on :).
well if i dont have enuff money for aftermarket exhaust at this time what would u recommend doing. i have heard to take a screw out of the expansion box and others say debaffle..........i dont know what would u recommend
I'd recommend leave well alone, start messing with the expansion chamber and it'll blow, be noisy and not help the running. Take the baffles out it'll be noisy and typically is non reversible with stock pipes, (if in the unlikely even they're held in by a screw as things in the old days used to be then by all means try it), otherwise just leave it until you can get a replacement, try scouring ebay and your local classifieds, even try local breakers to see if they have anything?
@temperntasha I've just put the deposit down on a '95 535, and I was wondering if you'd tried taking the baffles out and if so, what effects it has had? I should be picking mine up withing the next few days, and it would be nice to know if there is any way I can improve the sound without the cost of an aftermarket exhaust system, thanks
hey whats up i have a 1996 xv 535 virago.....its all stock im going to make it a bobber.......the converter box beneath the exhaust pipes......whats it for?? and how do i get my bike to sound tha way yours did in the video........my bike doesnt rumble as nice as yours? any suggestions?? thx
If you mean the box which sits under the fuel tank this is a part of the original exhaust system, it's essentially an expansion chamber.
Aftermarket systems do away with this and have a link pipe between the two to equalize pressure waves, (Harleys use this method as do most V twin configs).
The exhaust on mine is an aftermarket system which is modelled on the original and breathes a little better, does little for performance but makes a huge difference to the sound.
I don't know where you'd get one of these now but there are a few suppliers that do aftermarket pipes in different styles, if you're changing them i'd recommend you get some straight Harley style pipes, that way theres less chance of burning your leg on the upsweep of the rear pipe, they'd look nice on a bobber too, hope the build goes well and get some videos up.
First of all i have to say: Good review! I really like it.
I´ve been thinking about getting me a bike for the summer but i´m so confused weather i should get a Virago 535 or a Savage LS 650. I have a girlfriend who´s gonna ride with me, we are both around 167cm long so a small bike is not a problem :). But ivé been wondering wich bike to choose, i want to be able to take it for some longer rides. What do you recomend between these 2 bikes for me?
These are a great bike, perfect 'get back into biking' model and ideal as a general runner regardless, very forgiving and easy to handle.
I have no experience of the Savage SV650 (Suzuki?) so can't help there but i'm sure one would be as competent as the other. I can recommend the Virago though, buy the best you can afford and keep it clean and serviced and you'd be hard pressed to lose money on it when you sell it on. Perfectly comfortable for longer rides too, for Motorways a screens essential
Hi Spidiq8!! Nice review 5 stars!I I have a question. I'm hunting my first bike but my budget is a big issue. I like the XV 535.I'm 1.80 m and 80Kg. Do you thing I will ride in disconfort if i'm geting a 535 Virago? Also if the shaft drive brokes, would not that be a big problem to replace? Thanks and I hope you answer! Cheers mate!
I wouldn't worry over the drive shaft, you'd need to do something truly aggressive and spectacular to break one. Replacement would be plenty easy enough if you did manage it but i've never heard of or known a broken shaft in any shaft bikes.
Height won't be a problem and the motors plenty grunty enough.
Bad job if my talking offends you, evidently from your wild gesturing on your video you don't have the power of speech, i can see how this might upset you. I'll will point out, this video is a REVIEW, that means more than just showing pics of the bike being ridden while irritating the ass off of viewers by playing incredibly loud music, but hey.
Good on you for wearing the proper riding kit while filming yourself with a nausea inducing helmet cam at 70mph, that T-shirt kevlar is it?
i had one of these great little bikes brand new in 1992, was ideal for me as im only 5 foot 2! went all over the country touring me and the mrs loved it..... great days...gotta yam fzs fazer 600 now.... fast as fuck.. yiipppppppeeeee.......happy biking dudes...!
I have this bike, and lately it hasn't been starting. the sparkplugs are clean, and the filters are brand new. but the bike sounds like its not turning over when I try to start it. any body else have this problem and knows how to deal with it? I would really appreciate any help.
@papaaj06 i've recently had the same problems, ive given the spark plugs a clean and the battery a good charge, it is starting but not to its full potential, although the exhausts are nakered im putting new ones on this weekend hopefully help it out abit, ive always noticed this bike really doesnt like the cold.
Not a clue, can't imagine theres much in it. The 535 is the lowest seat i've used including the hardtail chop I had so I doubt the 250 could be any lower.
lots of differences. the virago 125 and 250 are similar.......... but the 535 is a whole another story. examples: the gastank is fake. its a huuuuge engine. and the whole gas-system is different... u cant use a 250 carburetor in a 250... wont work.... .....
The 'gastank' is not fake on 95> models it's a supplementary tank ,it still primarily fuels from the underseat tank but fuels up and feeds the lower tank from the top one, only early 535 models had a dummy plastic tank obvious by it's lack of filler cap.
The original Q was referring to seat height and not trying a smaller one can only guesstimate but I can't imagine the seat could be any lower.
I owned a nearly new harley 883 sportster , sold it and bought the 535. The yamaha is twice the bike the Harley was, better in every way and has never given me a days bother.
Have my '93 XV535 since last spring. I was looking for a bike to re-enter the biking world (after a few decades of absence), and it is hands-down the best bike for that purpose! I don't think I will "upgrade" any time soon, as I really love everything about it...
I'm a total and utter shortarse and I could stand and practically grip this between my knees, I have yet to meet anyone who couldn't touch the floor with both feet flat on one. (i'm about 5'8" apparently, with my boots on) :)
Have to say if you're much taller then ideally you'd need the aftermarket forward pegs and controls to be really comfy on a long run.
Hello,I want to buy one next year..but i have a problem.I am TALL..i got 191 cms.Someone told me that i can't ride that bike because it's too small BUT I LIKE EVERYTHING at virago 535.What is your height?you got tall friends that ride viragos? Greetings
Utter nonsense, the only problem height plays with any bike is when you're too short to touch the floor, I've known people of all heights ride these.
Only consideration is that you may want to replace the standard pegs with aftermarket forward controls to give you a more comfortable leg position on long journeys

@rimfa123 Covers vary greatly in quality and most will still get condensation underneatht them. The main thing is keeping the road salt off them in winter, hose down with cold water after using on salted roads if you commute in wintertime, keep all chrome parts and exposed metal covered in WD40 or ACF50 if you feel more flush, use a WD soaked rag and wipe everything over, it does eventually come off but protects it.
spidiq8 1 year ago
@spidiq8 Thanks alot, I'll give it a go tomorrow. It makes sense that as long as the rainwater is washed off and the chrome dried properly, soap doesn't matter, I haven't been riding long so I've got a lot to learn but thanks to people like you I'm getting there. Cheers again.

hi this is a great review. I'm buying my first bike 250cc Virago 2007 model.
I read some good reviews about it, but few locals here said that it has a low resell market (which I dont care)
But they said it has a V-twin engine and it gives alot of trouble. I donno why I though v-twin engines are good. please help me out sir!
btw I live in Sri Lanka so cant buy bikes higher than 250cc (its illegal)
thanks!
TheSabreenR 1 year ago
@TheSabreenR Can't say about the resell value in Sri Lanka, in the UK, they hold their value very well.
No direct experience of the 250 but they're great engines, if the carbs are side mounted like the 535, check for perished carburettor diaphragms, (it won't run right or pull if they're gone), very good bike, don't listen to the gossip unless they can back it up with facts figures and real life experience, everyone whos said anything negative to me about them has no experience themselves
spidiq8 1 year ago
@spidiq8 Thank you for the respond. Good to hear some info from the experts :) I'm going to buy virago 250 tomorrow morning :) wish me luck.
TheSabreenR 1 year ago
@TheSabreenR My first bike was a 1991 XV 250 Virago. I have ridden it almost problem free for two years. The engine is actually very smooth and reliable. The only problem I had is that the carburettor would freeze up during winter, but I think that won't be a problem in Sri Lanka ;-)
As a beginners bike, the 250 Virago is great. I had lots of fun. Note that the Honda CMX Rebel is also a very good buy.
SportsterXL1200S 1 year ago
@SportsterXL1200S yeah we dont have winter here :P
I bought the bike last sunday, had some minor repairs like brakes, lights. Gotta agree its an amazing beginners bikes, I was so afraid of taking corner turns on bigger bikes but this is so smooth. Also the sound is awesome!
Thanks for the comment btw :)

@TheSabreenR if you still care.... i bought a 250cc for myself a few years ago... it`s great! the original engine is totally reliable and durable... mine runs since 55000km ..... but the most awesome thing about that bike: no problems with rust! not even once!
have a lot of fun with your bike =)

I know a guy thats selling a 1996 Virago XV 535 for $1000. He says the same thing about it that a lot of posters here has said. The battery is dead and it now clicks whenever he tries to start it. From reading the responses posted here, I now have a gereral idea of how to troubleshoot it and if all goes well. I'm ging to buy it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this review. It was indeed VERY helpful!

What solution did you find? Mine goes back and forth from the looks of it.
Like some days it will run fine, and other the battery just dies.
horta85 1 year ago
@horta85 So far, its holding up with the new battery. I will try to start it every few days and see what happens!

@horta85
Good luck!
I'm going to change all the amps. I took the battery in for a test, said it was good, they also recharged it.
I'm going to let it also charge on the battery tender I added. If nothing, I'm taking it in to get it looked at!

The last information helped plenty! However, the turn on fuse blows every few weeks. What is the correct order for the fuses? 20A? 15A? 30A?
Again, much appreciated.
horta85 1 year ago
@horta85 I can't help on that one unfortunately as mine is long ago sold so can't check it for you.
Think I have a manual on PDF around somewhere, if I find it i'll see what it tells me, sorry I can't give you a definitive answer now.
If it's blowing everytime you turn on the ignition, i'd say you have a short circuit somewhere, I had something similar on my Z650, it transpired it was an instrument light bulb holder which was shorting across itself as the bulb had blown and been removed.

guys is it true the VIRAGO'S have the gas tank under the seat .. and this tank its fake?
ONLYreggaebass 1 year ago
@ONLYreggaebass Early models have a plastic dummy tank, all models have a fuel tank under the seat, early ones fill up with a cap under the seat, later models have the underseat tank PLUS this top supplementary tank, filling is done through the top tank.
I think I cover this in the video review?
spidiq8 1 year ago
Great Video! I just got one. But been having problems with it staying on. I always have to jump start it, I'm guessing it may be one of the fuses? I heard electrical issues are very common on the virago. Any clues would help! Thanks
horta85 1 year ago
@horta85 Check the battery charge and condition with a voltmeter and check the battery terminals, make sure they're clean and tight, some use brass adapters to change the side bolt config to a top bolt config, if these are on, either bin them and bolt directly to the side plates or fasten them using a dab of threadlock, same with the top ones as the V configuration engine can vibrate more than an inline four and loosen the terminals.
Otherwise the electrical system on these is rock solid.

@apricotsnms516 I don't understand your comment, could you explain please?
spidiq8 1 year ago
@spidiq8 lol i was saying that i appreciate your use of the imperial-unit system, and that most European reviewers usually use the metric system. which living in the US is a little hard to figure out right-off-the-top-of-my-head :)
apricotsnms516 1 year ago
@apricotsnms516 Just twigged, I take it you mean referring to gallons instead of litres?
spidiq8 1 year ago
@apricotsnms516 sigo sin entender xq las personas siguen usando un sistema tan poco práctico como este!
JUANJO23RA 1 year ago
@JUANJO23RA Yo tampoco, pero yo crecí con ella, y es más fácil de entender para mí. pero sí métrica es mejor :)
apricotsnms516 1 year ago
@JUANJO23RA and apricotsnms516
What's impractical about it? Had you been born and raised in the UK it would be what you know and the Metric system would be alien to you. Many of us still think in distances and measurements as feet and inches.
Start talking millimetres, metres and litres / KM to a British person and we'd be saying why use such an impractical system?
spidiq8 1 year ago
@apricotsnms516 jajajaja es mejor el sistema milimétrico!!!!! más práctico!!!!!

@RedKitty13 Thankyou, glad it was helpful. The Virago is a great bike, very easy to ride, perfect for a first big bike.
spidiq8 1 year ago
@spidiq8 Yes I see. Can't wait to try it out. There are a lot of Viragos on the market but I'm just not sure what I should look for. It is important for me that I don't have to run to the motoshop after 1000 km because something is broken. I'm not sure if 40.000 km on the speedometer would be too much....
RedKitty13 1 year ago
@RedKitty13 Not at all, like any vehicle as long as it's been looked after and given oil and filter changes it'll be fine. If unsure take someone along with you to view bikes and get their opinion, neglect is pretty easy to spot on a naked bike as everything is visible so it's hard to accidentally buy a dog.
Bike engines in general are quite longlasting now, I have a BMW with 105,000 miles on the odometer and have had jap fours with 55,000 miles on them.
Make sure offers reflect the condition.

Just two quick questions though - I'm 6'1 and about 15 stone. Do you think I'd be too big for this bike? I currently have a XV250 and feel too big for it - what's the size difference between the two bikes?
ERST105 1 year ago
@ERST105 I don't know, i've never owned or ridden an XV250, can't imagine it'd be much taller.
spidiq8 1 year ago
@mjo0032 Typically on most V-Twins you'd have a shared Crankpin meaning both cylinders rise and fall at the same time, this balances the engine and at the same time is what gives most V-twins, (Harley especially) that distinctive potato, potato, potato tickover. However, not all V-twins are on a shared crankpin and to be quite honest I don't know if the Virago is but would suspect so, usually it's things like the Ducati and Moto Guzzi that differ.
spidiq8 1 year ago
@mjo0032 There should be timing marks on both the cam sprocket and flywheel, if you get the forward cylinder at the BTDC timing mark, check the piston is near the top of the stroke then place the cam and make sure both inlet and exhaust valves are closed on cylinder 1, this will be the compression stroke, hope this helps?
spidiq8 1 year ago
Just to say great review. Would you say the smaller fuel tank would hamper someone wanting to tour Britain on the bike? I was thinking about buying a virago 535.
Scotvirago 1 year ago

Thanx again for the great review!

Nubbpiraten 1 year ago
@Nubbpiraten You're welcome. That's great and I hope you really enjoy the bike, although not high in the BHP stakes they're very very torquey and immensely strong at pulling, you'll find it will pull cleanly from 30mph in top gear riding solo without feeling like it struggles, if you plan long journeys i'd recommend low bars (if you have the high bars) and a flyscreen to keep off the wind on the motorways, (highways?)
Get some videos of your bike up for everyone to enjoy!

well if i dont have enuff money for aftermarket exhaust at this time what would u recommend doing. i have heard to take a screw out of the expansion box and others say debaffle..........i dont know what would u recommend
temperntasha 1 year ago
I'd recommend leave well alone, start messing with the expansion chamber and it'll blow, be noisy and not help the running. Take the baffles out it'll be noisy and typically is non reversible with stock pipes, (if in the unlikely even they're held in by a screw as things in the old days used to be then by all means try it), otherwise just leave it until you can get a replacement, try scouring ebay and your local classifieds, even try local breakers to see if they have anything?
spidiq8 1 year ago
@temperntasha I've just put the deposit down on a '95 535, and I was wondering if you'd tried taking the baffles out and if so, what effects it has had? I should be picking mine up withing the next few days, and it would be nice to know if there is any way I can improve the sound without the cost of an aftermarket exhaust system, thanks
SpaceCoachNinjas 1 year ago
hey whats up i have a 1996 xv 535 virago.....its all stock im going to make it a bobber.......the converter box beneath the exhaust pipes......whats it for?? and how do i get my bike to sound tha way yours did in the video........my bike doesnt rumble as nice as yours? any suggestions?? thx
temperntasha 1 year ago
If you mean the box which sits under the fuel tank this is a part of the original exhaust system, it's essentially an expansion chamber.
Aftermarket systems do away with this and have a link pipe between the two to equalize pressure waves, (Harleys use this method as do most V twin configs).
The exhaust on mine is an aftermarket system which is modelled on the original and breathes a little better, does little for performance but makes a huge difference to the sound.
spidiq8 1 year ago
I don't know where you'd get one of these now but there are a few suppliers that do aftermarket pipes in different styles, if you're changing them i'd recommend you get some straight Harley style pipes, that way theres less chance of burning your leg on the upsweep of the rear pipe, they'd look nice on a bobber too, hope the build goes well and get some videos up.

Hi!
Nubbpiraten 1 year ago
These are a great bike, perfect 'get back into biking' model and ideal as a general runner regardless, very forgiving and easy to handle.
I have no experience of the Savage SV650 (Suzuki?) so can't help there but i'm sure one would be as competent as the other. I can recommend the Virago though, buy the best you can afford and keep it clean and serviced and you'd be hard pressed to lose money on it when you sell it on. Perfectly comfortable for longer rides too, for Motorways a screens essential

@spidiq8 Yes the Savage is a Suzuki :).
Thank you so much for the information!

Cheers mate!
nocturnus1985 2 years ago
I wouldn't worry over the drive shaft, you'd need to do something truly aggressive and spectacular to break one. Replacement would be plenty easy enough if you did manage it but i've never heard of or known a broken shaft in any shaft bikes.
Height won't be a problem and the motors plenty grunty enough.

Is the a Hight difference between an XV 250 and XV 535
manielis 2 years ago
Not a clue, can't imagine theres much in it. The 535 is the lowest seat i've used including the hardtail chop I had so I doubt the 250 could be any lower.

Hey again.
Whats the difference between a xv250 and xv535.. Exept the ingine,,
Is there a hight difference,,!?
Sorry for the bad english
manielis 2 years ago
lots of differences. the virago 125 and 250 are similar.......... but the 535 is a whole another story. examples: the gastank is fake. its a huuuuge engine. and the whole gas-system is different... u cant use a 250 carburetor in a 250... wont work.... .....
monstertrucker1 2 years ago
The 'gastank' is not fake on 95> models it's a supplementary tank ,it still primarily fuels from the underseat tank but fuels up and feeds the lower tank from the top one, only early 535 models had a dummy plastic tank obvious by it's lack of filler cap.
The original Q was referring to seat height and not trying a smaller one can only guesstimate but I can't imagine the seat could be any lower.

On standard setup for long journeys you'd get cramped.
Fit a set of forward pegs and you'd be fine.
For short and intermediate runs you'd likely be OK, i'm roughly 5'8" and was plenty comfy on runs up to 250 miles, (with fuel stops naturally)

Greetings
DreamTime0989 2 years ago
"nd response i've had of this nature.
Utter nonsense, the only problem height plays with any bike is when you're too short to touch the floor, I've known people of all heights ride these.
Only consideration is that you may want to replace the standard pegs with aftermarket forward controls to give you a more comfortable leg position on long journeys
