Having done a bit or research, it seem two well regarded gins are -

Chase - William's Gin - made with herb infused vodka which is distilled from apples. Chase also sells the distilled apple vodka as "Naked Chase Vodka".

Bombay Sapphire vs Tangueray Gin -

I typically drink Sapphire partly because I don't drink enough to try every gin out there, and Sapphire is certainly above average, & it is dependable.

Sapphire has 11 botanicals that are steam infused rather than boiling. The flavor is very even with nothing distinctive standing out.

Tangueray does have a distinct PINE flavor, probably due to a generous helping of Juniper. This certainly doesn't taste bad, but just a bit too piney for me.

I have another theory about the "European Martini": perhaps he was served with a very dry martini? One that has very little vermouth in it? It was said that Churchill, for example, liked his martini so dry as to "get as close to the vermouth bottle as to look at it from across the room". Living in Germany, it IS a very Homeresque Oddessey to find a well assembled/mixed martini or any coctail for that matter. I blame it on the icecube phobia Europeans have and a general disinterest in any drink with more than one type of alcohol in it. On the "Martini" issue , Rachel is right as rain. (1) You should specify dry vermouth or French vermouth as bianco vermouth is also white.

(2) You nailed the recipe, although orange bitters can be added per an older recipe.
