His name is Max Carl (Gronenthal), but today he goes by Max Carl, lead singer formerly of .38 special and now Grand Funk Railroad. If you want to hear more of him, stay on Youtube and go to Jack Mack and the Heart Attack MTV and you will be treated to about 45 minutes worth of Max and Jack Mack for a new years eve special in 82 from MTV...............it's well worth the search.
Oh man, thanks for posting this clip, I was probably at this show. They were the Thursday house band at Club Lingerie on Sunset, and Tuesday night at a club on Pico, can't remember the name, and maybe it was the other way around. But it was always a great night, always a lot of fun, the entire room would
move in unison during "Heart Attack Dance". These guys could flat-out play, and with Max up front on "A Girl Like You", well, it was the best of everything. Especially on a summer might.
During the late 80's, Jack Mack use to take turns with Tower of Power playing weekends at the Palomino club in N. Hollywood Talk about tight horn sections!!!
I knew Mark Cambell when we were kids growning up in the suburbs of New Orleans east , He is related to Glen Cambell,, Last I seen him was at the first ever concert in the Superdome, he was working back stage at the time and he let a group of us in back stage, Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Wet Willie and Marshall Tucker played that day, We had a great time,,I knew Mark was going to make it big some day when were kids he was always involved with bands and music,,, thanks for sharing
If anyone reading this knows how to contact him, please let me know. Thanks... W.A. Williams/The Reverend Billy Rose!
P.S. I was kidding about The Rev! earlier. Although a good singer, songwriter in his own right, he doesn't come close to having achieved the level of success that Max has as either a singer or songwriter. Max Hronenthal/Max Carl is THE BEST EVER!!!
Max Gronenthal is the Greatest Blue-Eyed Soul Singer alive today. He's my most favorite ever. (Being the humble man that I am, I can't possibly place myself, The Reverend Billy Rose!, first in that category so I'll settle for second!!!) I first heard Max on a "Jack Mack and The Heart Attack" album... "Cardiac Party", which I still own and Max graciously signed for me when he was with 38 Special. Continued on next post...
I used to catch this AMAZING band at a club in Salt Lake City in the mid 80's and for a final time at The Palomino Club in LA: Of the two vocalists here, the guy I remember as being just a killer was the one with the beard and satin jacket here. Is that Max or Mark: Both are fine singers, but Mr. Beard was awesome. And the whole band, wow: took a young guy to the Palomino gig who'd never heard a horn section before....after the first set all he could say was YEAH!
I used to see them at the Palomino and several other clubs in the L.A. area! I lived behind the Palomino in the early-to-mid 80s. The guy with the beard is Mark Campbell. Max was the band's original lead singer and Mark came on board when Max left for a solo career. Max still does some guest gigs with them, as evidenced by this video! They're STILL an AWESOME band, and I really miss being able to see them live now that I live in the Chicago area!
Yes, speaking of the Palomino, I saw both Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Buffett at that club, late 70's to early 80's and sat at the bar about 15 feet from the stage. The Killer was still just that the night I caught him and considering I was a young teenager when Lewis first hit it big with "Great Balls of Fire" in 1958 some 20 to 25 years before, you can appreciate I saw him at a good time in his career.
Yes they are...they've reconfigured the band, but are still at it. Mark Campbell, Andrew Kastner (guitar, back-up vocals, arranger and song writer for many of their originals) and Bill Bergman (tenor sax) are the only ones from the early days that are still with the band. Unfortunately, the band's name sake, Jack Mack (a.k.a. Claude Pepper) and bassist David Lee Watson have passed away.
i remember a great track they did in police academy at the end... think it was called.. im gonna be some body...really catchy tune, anyone got it??/ ..garcial.
Mark Campbell provided Michael J. Fox's singing voice in Back to the Future (Johnny B. Goode).

Didn't Bill Bergman play with Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders?

It's possible, but I'm not sure. I've only known him as a member of Jack Mack & The Heart Attack.
