Im 24yrs old and truly beleive that i am an old soul, terence music has a certain Magic, something i can deeply relate too...Terences will continue to live on as long as the people listen, and at my age people are still listening and digging you Terence...love your story telling, musicianship, beauty and soul...xoxoxox
I love everything Sonanda made (Terence). The world was not ready for this wise and knowing man. His songs and lyrics would have set off a revolution but a revolution much needed. He had/has the ability to change the world in his songs...they knew that. He coud free minds but to free minds means the 'powers that be' could not run their game on the masses as they have been doing for so long. Terence was essential.
Respect to Sam Cooke for writing such a beautiful song and to Terence Trent D'Arby for conveying the message of hope thru struggle with such depth, soul and beauty in this amazing rendition. Thanks varuteddy for the upload and lyrics.
And then I go to my brother and he whines up knocking me back down on my knees. There's been times that I've thought this couldn't last for very long But some how I was still able to carry on!! the lyrics are wrong on this video just so you know..
i wonder if people compared otis' version to sam cooke's when he first did it! music doesn't belong to anybody- all 3 versions are brilliant, I wouldn't say either one is better, just different .
He put his own spin on this great Otis Redding classic. Terrence did make it big and is still doing what he does best performing. People need to stop comparing him, he is a gret artist in his own right.
My favorite song. Ever. After hearing many versions, Terrence is the only one that can bring me back to that feeling I first got while watching Denzel as Malcolm X; as I was a kid, hearing this for the time. Love it. Each note. Period.
It's a masterpiece. I never thought anyone could reach Sam Cooke, but I must admit that this version has the same pain and this both raw and gentle voice - oh my God, it's just amazing - love it much!
A true example of his vocal talent. Vocally he is up there with the best of them and Im not gone name them cause I dont wanna lessen there star, but you know who they are. You can question his arrogance all you want but ask yourself this, Would he really have found his musical genius and given us these wonderful musical masterpieces if his character was any different ? Love that attitude, love the music, what a star ! Continue your spiritual journey Sananda and thanks for the music !
A change is going to come, but not for the best, the Rothschilds & the Rockerfellers & the Bogus Jews want to destroy the society we have today. The will close all the Banks to centralise the Banking where no one can buy or sell, except them.
This is an awesome rendition of A Change.. I bought D'Arby's early music and he was a favorite of mine but I hadn't heard anything of him for years. At that time fans didn't have the vehicles that exist today to support talented artists.
moroscuro25.You are right about Otis Redding, and i will go along with pattie, but i would have to disagree when it comes to this song.there is only one singer better than TTD and that would be the original Sam Cooke. His words and feeling came from the time of change.
Like you I also revere Sam Cooke's original. But I have to give props to Terence here. This version is superb, excellent!! Also try out Detrick Haddon's version. For me its the best I've heard.
Never even heard of this man untill today, and im so greatful i found out about him. His voice is amazing, totally unexpected, such a raw and still smooth voice... Truly gifted!
Love this Photo of Terence, UMMMMMM!! This is a new one of his for me, What control and dynamics on this work of art. It is simply marvelous. This man is one of the greatest vocalists with a signature voice that NO ONE CAN copy. It is so beautriful and reachs to my soul. Thanks Terence for singing for the world. We Love YOU and your wonderful Band that I know you love too, because YOU ALL make beautiful music together. Peace and Love and thanks Varutedddy for sharing this with us. Peace + Love!
Just came accross your comment of Terence d"Arby. This young man for what ever reason never received the fame that he should have. He had the insight of Otis Redding. The stage presence of James Brown, and the showmanship of Micheal Jachson. So go figure. Talent does not always rise to the top. Sad but true.. When I first saw this young man years ago I just knew he would be major. it didn t happen. But He s still major in my heart. Guess what? I m an old 63 year old white dude still beleiving.
Hi This is truly a beautiful song. Don't you think Terrence is for us to enjoy during our awakening journey. He is so deep in his music. That voice the most unique and reaches right to the soul. : -) Thanks for sharing it with me friend. :-)
Hey starr522 you said a mouthful and all so true. I never gave much attention to Terence until I heard this song and he does it with so much feeling that you can almost feel his pain. I hope we haven't heard the end of Mr. d'Arby because he sure has a lot to say and we shouldn't take him for granted!!
dear, i´m only 50 but I think, like You, that this was the mayor flame to burn our souls in that times. Sorry we don´t live next door. You´ll only hear good music from my room. Beijos (Kisses)
@starr522 he is still making awesome music now + live shows in Europe and changed his name to Sananda Maitreya. Google his official website and discover the new pearls :-)
@starr522 TTD was amazing, and he did rise to the top. But the perception in popular culture was that his talent was accompanied by arrogance and ego, not humility. And that's sad, whether it was true or not. People want you to be talented and confident... but not too confident. His sophomore album tanked, not because he's not talented, but because the tide of public perception had turned against him. :( It's sad, because I agree with you on everything you said. His voice still gives me chills.
@beefmageditor ..TTD's sophomore album tanked because he refused to sell out to the record companies closed minded idea of what a black man should be singing. They wanted him to sing soul ,when he wanted to musically experiment and sing rock 'his first love' .The record company decided not to promote him and thus sealed his fate. Also it was reported that his very famous label mate who was the cash cow for the label, felt threatened by TTD and contributed to sabotaging his career.
@starr522 reason why...he never had the image, the name or the money to be huge...but his music still inspires the real people, like me and you that came here looking for it! peace man
I've follow TTD from the time he first came out with "If You Let Me Stay."
The reason why he never got the credit his talent deserves is because he was a truly arrogant person. The arrogance may have been justified by this talent...but it rubbed people the wrong way.
@MichaelTeniente ,listen most reports I have heard of TTD /Sananda by people who personally know him are that he is a sweet person.Even his ex-girlfriends have very positive things to say about him. He may have come off as arrogant but I really don't think that it was his intention .He was young and had a lot of belief in himself and it was all part of an image which some people took the wrong way. Give the man a break, he's suffered greatly in his career to the point of considering suicide
@marmackk, Don't get me wrong man. I'm a big fan of the guy. The poem "7 more days" is the best I've ever heard.
We all suffer until the rebirth. Why do you think he got a new name? He overcame the circumstances. Tell him to quit crying to be understood. The man is so talented that he probably could do some mainstream music and be great again.
Anyway I love his music. Well, some of it I don't get but the one I do get are excellent. Succumb to me. Great song.
@starr522 He was big - HUGE in fact for a while, after "Introducing the Hardline...", but his ego got the best of him, and some of the comments he made about his album and his talent were taken by the music-buying public as arrogant and egotistical. Consequently, his follow-up album tanked and he's never since enjoyed the success of "Introducing the Hardline...". But he's a BRILLIANT singer, I think. Absolutely.
@starr522 TTD was massive at least here in the UK for an albeit brief time in the late 80s. Even though I was only about 6 I remember it quite well and fondly. My aunt had 'Introducing the hardline...'. It's unfortunate he didn't manage to sustain the buzz beyond the one or two years after he first broke through. He did have a hit with Des'Ree in 1993 'Delicate' but it was pretty quiet before and after then. I think there were some issues with his PR here in the UK too...
@starr522 I can only speculate that he either fell out or had "artistic differences" with those around him. I liked his music when he first cam out and liked the fusion (my mates used to laugh at me) but like I always say "good music is good music and talent is talent no matter what genre, age, or race"
such a voice (if i had to have any man's voice, his is the one i would pck. such a talent, i believe he played all the instruments (or many of them) on this album too
teddy long time fan of this guy,the range, roughness and emotion in his voice is so powerfull i think most pro singer's could only wish.I'am a hugh fan of the great sam cooke and i think this cover has to be up there way up there.
this song is awesome but his best by a long time is "holding on to you" that song is absolutely amazing, i can never get sick of it nor can i get it out of my head LOL
Why havent I heard of thisguy?? He is amazing! i love that voice and his way of changing the song to fit him! It is an awesome cover, and blusy! Good Job my friend!!!!!!!
oh my god, u've never heard of terence trent darby? Oh you have such a treat in store. My favourite song ever is a song by him called 'Holding on to you'.
Hi, As i say search youtube for 'Holding onto you' Terence Trent Darby although he has changed his name to 'Sananda Maitreya' it's a song i have never got bored of, he also was a champion amateur boxer.
I first heard 'Holding onto you' when i was a teenager and now im 34 it was a while back. It's funny whoever wrote the song described perfectly how it feels to be totally in love. I'm always interested to see how people react whenever i play it to see if it moves them or if they just talk all the way through it.
The album pictured above for him was like Purple Rain for Prince. Mainstream loved it. Had so many hits from this one album it made seasoned songwriters and singers heads spin. His eccentric manner and arrogance turned off some too early for him to win a main stream base of fans. His music is still the shit nevertheless. I can't for the life of me figure out how the song "SEVEN MORE DAYS" from the HARDLINE album got no airplay. Haven't see it on youtube either. Y'all are missin out...PEACE!!..
Thank you so much Varuteddy for posting this. I heard Terrence's version of A Change is Gonna Come many years ago and i never could find it. I recall telling many people that no one could recreate this song as close to Sam Cooke as Terrence did, but they'd look at me like right. I love Terrence Trent Darby's voice, always have since he debuted when i was young. Although, just a kid when he came out, I've always had a good ear for quality music. Again Thank you!
I discovered this version recently and think its amongst the best covers, Sam Cooke's original being way out in front. It's a massively uplifting song and it great to listen different versions from the top artists across the generations.
Have to agree...Sam Cooke's original version was head and shoulders above the rest. Gives me chills! Such potential never realized in that man!! These covers are great to listen to, but all are missing the verse: 'I go to the movies...etc.' I know when Cooke released his version, it was edited out for radio play (thought to be too volatile ) Just adding my thoughts...thanks for posting. A big TTD fan!~
For many of Americas "A Change is Gonna Come" November 4th when Barack Obama is elected President. TTD emotional cover embodies the struggles faced by many. Vote 4 Change!
If any one ever had doubts about how good a singer he is just listen to this: to hold your own on a Sam Cooke classic just proves that this man can sing.
Top 2- Sam cooke is of course top choice, but this one is a close second. Well, mind you the Aretha Franklin one is a killer. The new Seal version is quite good albeit a little technical. Most people that attempt to do this song are solid soul singers.its very hard to keep the original line and to make it your own.
I fucking love Terrence and always have, what a man, what a voice!

Most people that attempt to do this song are solid soul singers.its very hard to keep the original line and to make it your own.

theres a seal version? when did that happen?? ur comment is from two months ago, so i know im late catching up!! cant imagine seal singing this!
