@shazzy Start with one light. Just one. Get the hang of how it responds and what the light looks like. There are a lot of manufacturers that make all-in-one solutions but check ebay and the like for Traxon or Color Kinetics systems. They are the easiest to wire/program.
Wow man. Just wow. I want to do this in a room of mine which is about 250 sq yards but I have NO idea where to start and where to finish. A little help?
@shaazy Buy an Arduino(a beginner's book on electronics wouldn't hurt either, theres lots of non-boring ones), watch some videos here on youtube on how to work with LEDs, draw some designs of yours and estimate the size and number of lights you want... then calculate the total voltage and amps the system will need and **ask someone else** to build or sell you a power source that fits the job.Beware though, power sources are very tricky and dangerous for a beginner to make by himself.
@igoronline Thanks man. The youtube part I've pretty much covered. Scoured tonnes of videos and while the schematics are beyond me, I'm still willing to start small. But ofcourse its the really complicated bit that intrigues me, especially the computer controlled light show bit. That must take some serious wizardry.
God I'd love to see all this WITHOUT the frenzied pace, WITHOUT all the annoying drunk zooming around by the camera guy and inane camera tilts and fast scene changes. AAAARGHHH!!! who needs that????? sorry but it's so incredibly distracting I just want so much to see this it's frustrating!!!! Otherwise from what I could gather, what an inspiring creative haven of lights, would have loved to see a mature presentation of this incredible home space without the need for dramamine afterwards.
@jabbadu431 So so easy. The lights are actually attached to the ceiling, and I just suspended a plastic panel below it. You can't see them through the panel, but the wires (low voltage so they are safe) are just stapled to he ceiling as well.
@PaigeyWaigey17 Actually it's incredibly eco-friendly. LEDs are energy efficient, and very safe to install. The entire installation used just over 150 watts of power, lit up the entire space, and all for less electricity than two regular bulbs.
This is amazing. I have seen such beauty only in still images from 3ds. But now looking at your video and find them it is actually possible is like dream. This looks amazing. Hard work pays.
oh my god...this is my dream home!!!! I have the same obsession with lighting and am starting renovations on our home and have been trying to incorporate lighting like this EVERYWHERE...so far he has only agreed to putting LED lighting in the bathroom and a disco floor downstairs, after many years of fighting for it...now I can prove to my husband this can look classy as well as fun...wow...I LOVE THIS!!!!!
@nzraven69 Thank you so much for the compliments. Actually, the video makes them seem very clubby and blazingly bright but the effect was actually much more subtle. I can send you some pictures that better illustrate what they look like if you'd like.
@spanishphoto it looks like Color Play 3 which you can download from Color kinetics website. with that you buy the iplayer3 . connect lights w/ usb or dmx
If you don't feel like you're giving away the "secret" to your awesome loft, I'd really appreciate it if you shared what program you use to control your lights! And also the connection between your lights and computer?
I'm building a dj booth/table and I would really like to implement your techniques into my design. Thanks in advance, I appreciate your time in replying to my questions.
@Wantaskillet Hey there, I used ColorKinetic's Colorplay and their iPlayer device to connect it to the PC. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
I remember my brother buying the Pulse box from Pink floyd back in the 90's that included a throbbing LED.. he had to disconect the led because it was driving us nuts!!! this kind of trippy efects are cool for a loung or a disco... but not for a house for christ sake!! ahahaha I counldn't fucking concentrate in taking aleak on that bathroom!
@eldruidacosmico I totally understand your perception. The colors were changing very rapidly for the show, normally the color changes take place over hours, sometimes days. It's much much more subtle in person, trust me.
@kingjoeyjr Really?? in that case it should be pleasant.. your right, There's a building in Caracas (in La Castellana neighborhood) that has some really cool LED efects on it's outside, you should look it up, it is located near a park so alll the pod-heads gather to contemplate it hahaha it's a very curious social fenomenon. There's got to be a video somewhere.
i am really amazed!! wonderfull stuff! i am about to get my interior design diploma soon, and i love lights too, they really can change the whole room / set the mood / feel, call as you want, what you did is just awsome how is possible to conect all these lights to computer, and how you managed for lights to correspond to the speed of you playing the piano?
@AnnCecil28 Hi Ania, the lights were all connected to a mini computer that can be programmed using free software. Insofar as them corresponding to the piano, that was me changing what I was playing to match the lights, not the other way around :)
I could see you turning that into a business. I think the guy below who had suggested night clubs/bars would be interested - he was right on the money.
You don't see many people who have the knowledge to do this sort of thing from concept stage to installation.
@Lunarsight What a nice compliment. I'm actually in the very beginning stages of starting a design company which focuses on lighting. Hopefully you'll see a lot more videoes from me soon.
@Lunarsight Thanks, what a nice thing to say. I'm trying to figure out just how to do that--turn this into a business while still having fun with it. Any advice? :)
Great work, love it! I feel the same way about lighting and have many different kinds, but the led strips are totally awesome and now I have to get some!
very impressive work you have done, I am totally jealous. I must say however, unless you start dating a blind woman it will remain a bachelor pad :) Not sure too many chicks would want to live in a house where it's advisable to wear sunglasses indoors.
Haha it was actually a LOT more subtle than in the video. They made me turn up the flashiness for the camera. For the most part the colors faded over hours, sometimes days.
haha look what i did lol i bought some 8 inch LED lights that switch colour from IKEA and placed them under my desk :D its pretty cool haha im gona buy some more and place them everywhere in my room :P
@maximusben1 Hopefully that's where I'll end up. I'm very excited to be designing an entire home in Boston, maybe it will be the start of something big.
