Thank you for posting this message. I am about to start LPN school (or LVN school for CA) within 2 months after being laid off from a law firm (23 years). Nursing has always been my passion, and I look at this time as my window of opportunity. I understand that I must be realistic regarding my expectations. My plan is to get licenced for my LVN, then enter a bridge to RN or BSN program. I am excited and a little scared.
I would STRONGLY suggest anyone that can't be discouraged from nursing as a career begin with LPN. I myself intended to become an NP, but the more I learned about nursing, the less respect I had for the culture. I'm glad I only lost a year to it rather than 4. Also, there's a saying here that "the main difference between an LPN and an RN is $10 / hr". I am well acquainted with the RN curriculum, and I would have to agree. PLEASE, start with LPN, before you've committed and lost too much!
I have also been in and out of an LPN program, but it was a divorce that got in my way. It has been several years but I am not trying to get into the RN program at my local community college. It helps me so much, to see success stories like yours. I need to see them for encouragement. Thank you so much and good luck to you.
According to the human resources in the hospital in Las Vegas Nevada. They are saying LPNs are now being phased out of the medical field for the simple fact the hospitals do not take in LPNs anymore.
Hey Renee, I have Super Awesome news! I received my Entrance Interview Invitation in the mail yesterday! So, I go for my Entrance Interview on Monday June 27, 2011 at 9am for the LVN/LPN program. I plan to bridge into the ADN RN program once I am done, I just really want to have experience b4 I am a RN so that my nervous feeling I get sometimes can subside. Experience is the best teacher! Right? I am sooo geeked!!!!!
Good Video! I am going into the LPN/LVN program in August. I go to a Community College I pay roughly about $3000 a semester. Anyhoot, they require me to have 6months experience as an LPN/LVN(Plan: Work weekends and do prereqs) to bridge into the RN program. There are 8 Prereqs that I need and I am currently taking 1 of them. Bonus as a LVN bridging into the ADN-RN program in 2 semesters I can Be an RN!! And in 2 more semesters I can have a BSN-RN! BOOM! I think LPN/LVN Programs Rock!!
The LPN program that I was in last year was accelerated, you do fundamentals, medsurg in 6 weeks. The RN program is 12 weeks. I can't do that again, thats why I am taking my college algebra to get into RN program, I give mad pops to the ones's that can do an accelerated program. At that time I was offered a spot bc the RN program had a long waiting list. I am now applying to another school that has no wait list for RN program. I was like you when I was in LPN school I could have studied better.
and I hear a lot of people saying RPNs are equivalent to LPNs... but RPNs go to school for 2 years of a college combined university program which seems more equivalent to an ASN. The only way you can be an RN here is if you have your BScN.
HEY RENEE, I AM A LPN WHO RECENTLY FINISHED SCHOOL TO BRIDGE FOR RN. TO ME I THINK IT IS GOOD EXPERINCE TO BEING A LPN FIRST CAUSE YOU GET TO LEARN WHAT NURSES DO AND NOT GET ALL THE EXTRA DEMANDS. I THINK NURSES NEED EXPERIENCE BEFORE GETTING THROWN INTO SUPERVISOR AND CHARGE POSITIONS. EVEN THOU U DO ALMOST THE SAME THINGS BESIDES A COUPLE OF THINGS I.E. HANG BLOOD, AND PUSH IV DRUGS. AND DEPENDING ON WHERE U LIVE AND WORK, THEY MAKE U DO A LOT OF THE THINGS RN'S DO.
@queenstl1 I couldnt't agree with you more! That's why I believe people shouldn't stop at their LPN and definitely go back for their RN's, because end up working just as hard, but make less than a RN. Congrats on finishing school and thank you for watching!
@Renee4christ THE PAY , WELL LET ME SAY THIS, AS A NEW RN I WILL MAKE LESS THEN I DO AS A LPN, SUCKS RIGHT. THEY LOOK AT IT AS A NEW POSITION WITH NO EXPERIENCE IN IT. SOME PLACES MAY ACKNOWLEDGE IT, BUT NOT MANY, SO YOU HAVE TO FIGHT FOR THE MONEY. THE JOB I WAS AT JUST STARTED PAYING FOR EXPERIENCE LIKE 3 YEARS AGO.
@queenstl1 ALSO, I STARTED OFF AS A NURSE ASSISTANT, THEN BECAME CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANT. SO I WORKED MY WAY UP YHE CHAIN AND LEARNED A LOT FROM EACH POSITION. AS A LPN I HAVE TRAINED SEVERAL RN'S. AND MANY THOUGHT I WAS A RN BECAUSE OF MY EXPERIENCE. AND AS THE SAYING GOES EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER. THERE ARE PROGRAM THRU THE STATE THAT DO HELP U PAY FOR LPN SCHOOLS ATLEAST HERE IN ST.LOUIS, OR BASE IT OFF INCOME.
