GS is really really bad. people in /2 look for people for ToC10 (which drops 232 which full T9 is - 4000gs) and they ask for 4.8k gs (which is nearly good enough for ICC25). that is what makes me angry more than anything else
using GS with elitist group helps in weeding out some of the baddies it tells you if the person is gemmed /geared properly for their spec as well as their enchants it doesnt cover the skill aspect but it most certainly covers a couple of GS weakneses
@janssonbarnet it gives a small indicator when you inspect a person telling you their spec their role and percentages of proper gems /enchants/gear so if a ele sham is half gemmed for str with agi gear it will show a 50% gem rating for example and a 75% gear rating depending on how much agi gear its using on mouseover it will show a tooltip that shows all deficiencies by item slot

ehm, people using addons intelligently :D yea right :)) Like that would ever happen. Could you ask a player that dies (due to standing in aoe) and blames healer for it, to use an addon intelligently. He will, most likely, link dps meter in raid chat (for all 25 players)and call players(that actually move from the aoe on their feet at the cost of some dps) below his score noobs.
Im sure everyone has encounter such a specimen at least a couple of times. ;)
You were saying something about no add-on to tell intelligence. I found and add-on that is useful and it is called Elitist group. This add-on let's people rate each other and lists gear and checks if they are enchanted/gemmed correctly.
It also allows you to look at their achievements and how many kills they have in certain fields. Hope this helps, worth a try.
i took a mage with 5100 gearscore yesterday in a pug and a warlock with 5720 and the mage was doing about 7k dps while the lock was at 4k.... so yeah gearscore is not everything

I didn't say there was lower level gear that was bad? Hell, I'm using and ulduar 10 trinket still. Knowing fights is, and always has been, only half the encounter. If you dont know how to play your class as well, then you are slowing down progression, and that's what PVE is all about. You cannot down a boss with shitty dps, heals or tanks. I'm against gearscore, and if you read what I wrote, you would know that.

His gear is amazing, his itemization is SHIT, his dps was even SHITTIER. 5.4k GS with 4k dps as a fury warrior on trash, and 4k dps on a boss... WOW. Gearscore means what now? Also, I saw a feral druid with 5.4k gs (full relentless) gemming SPELL PENETRATION.
Then there is me; under 5.4k gs, but can sustain 7-8k as a boomkin on LONG bosses on a shitty laptop. Burst fights (5mans) I can pull 10k+ lol.

Gearscore is overrated...It simpley adds up the highest iL , rather than the better stats...Theres several instances in which you will choose a lower iL piece with better stats, over the higher iL piece with lesser stats...

imo gearscore needs to calculate gems and enchants too cause i'm sick of people in full t9 with bc gems and no enchants cause they're too cheap to buy epic gems or get them almost free through honor.
yeah, thats another of the dozens of issues you run into with gearscore when people try to get it as high as possible rather than actually improving their gear.
I agree. I have an Enhancement Shaman rated around 5150 with that addon. I peak 10k on Koralon ( falling back to 8.6k, would be higher if everyone else was doing more) I have been regected so many times for pug raids due to the mass adoption of this addon by the masses and thier weird logic. Now Offspec Job classes with the gear, they look fine on paper..but fail so hard because they really must have a more in depth understanding of what they are doing...Too many fail offspec peeps around.
Thank Gods someone said it. My main is ICC geared BUT I never judge a player by their gear. I have pugged with players in low score gear who have done well and players who have worn high score gear who have been terrible. Players who rely on it too much - well your going to miss out on some good players.
Some one may have said this already but me and my Friend were messing around on the Internet as we usually do and we found a mod,(Well it was a script I think) that lets you modify your gear score, so be extra careful and just do a quick inspect to double check it. Also its really fun to run around with a 7k gear-score and freak people out.
That's exactly what I think about gearscore. An arcane mage may have like 5250 gearscore but might be stacking crit instead of haste, something that WILL affect the dps of that person so there is when you should use gearscore wisely instead of demanding a high GS on trade.
Lot's of people use it to gear up. They pass over gear they need so they can get gear to increase GS. So I end up with people in pvp gear and other lame stuff. The one thing you must do with gear score is turn on gearscore in chat. Once you have doen that you can click the gs number in chat and look at the gear the player has equiped no matter where you are in the game.
you can't accurately say you did tests proving one set was better than another. Boomkins are way too RNG based to really do testing with. Looking at the bonuses, it would appear 2t8 was better cause it said 15% crit on starfire, 15%damage to wrath eclipsed. well, under the eclipse, starfire pretty much always crits, so you are left with 15% wrath damage.
4t9 was 4%damage period. thats it, 4% damage no matter if you had eclipse, doesnt effect crit, and rng isnt gunna have negative/no effects
There was a group that went to Ulduar 10 ONLY IN BLUES, and they cleared the whole place. Just goes to show that gear is such a small part of performance.
Moonkins, up until 3.2 had to use 2pt8, even if they could have gotten 4pt9, but the tier 8 bonus was simply better. Ironicly then, a moonkin with 4pt9 back then would have a higher number, but would be worse geared than a moonkin using 2pt8.
I agree that the wrath and sf damage bonus was nice, but using the 4pc t9 just makes sense when the stats are better.
The bonuses for both sets are reasonably close in terms of wrath and sf bonus and the mf dot crits are so so. I think any boomkin still in 2pc t8 needs to review.
@DarKmaNiaN No. Back before 3.3, 2pt8 still had a better output. I did some tests, and found that 2pt8 was over 4pt9 by about 150 DPS consistantly, and that was on a dummy. The difference would be bigger in a raid.
But NOW, in 3.3, 4pt9 is obviously the best choice.
@Qieth oh right of course. They reworked exlipse too so that doesn't seem to function as friendly as it did before. The turn around procs seem to be nerfed somehow. Although its still possible.
@DarKmaNiaN I don't want to purposely advertise my moonkin blog, but if you google Qieth, you might see it. I talk about the eclipse changes there, in some post.
The short version is that you can't proc eclipse before 15 seconds after the previous one procced. This means you cant cancel eclipse just as you cast to proc solar eclipse, but it can happen once in a while if you are lucky to land a starfire JUST as lunar eclipse runs out.
balance druid in his 5000gs healing set got a raid spot because of that # alone. no one inspected, so he secured a spot, switched to his worse boomkin set. he stayed for the raid. ive also seen people with killer pvp sets but poorer pve sets do the same.
THANK YOU for pointing out this addon is no replacement for armory and inspect. the addon is fine, but the masses dont use it intelligently. abuse of the addon makes it a problem.
There is an increadably easy way to tell if someone knows how to play. Loot at their hit rating. If they don't have their hit capped, they don't know how to play.
There are only a few classes in their protection spec that wont really be aiming to cap their hit rating. tbh only noobs dont cap their hit. Its easy to see what youre implying

Vukasinthevule's Execute hits Air for 12,570 (Critical).
Gear score just shows what gear that person has it doesn't show how skilled they are a person with greens and blues can do better than a person with 5kgs
From what I've seen with GS, having higher than 5k usually means the person has done more than heroics to get there gear and usually means they should be decent.
Although one issue I have in random heroics is that pvp gear can have a pretty good rating. Which obviously if anyone's trying to do pve in pvp gear they have no clue what they're doing and will most likely fail pretty hard
Nice spiel on GS. It really needed to come from someone that a lot of folks trust so ty for outting GS for what it is. I'm not saying its shyt either, only that it should be used in the right context. Coupling GS with Recount or similar is not a bad start to monitor a pug, but Gear doesn't = Skill EVER.
@01patel ToC25 (NOT heroic) with a couple pieces from IC10 has my GS at over 6200 with the GearScore addon. Different addons give different numbers, and the only ones that matter for comparison to the topic of the video is the addon he's ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT!

Gearscore is the ONLY real way to ensure that a person at least has the minimum GEAR to handle a given instance or raid. It does NOTHING to indicate the ability of the player. I've seen players who absolutely suck get carried along and end up very well geared simply because the guild didn't have enough viable players to bench the scrub. If you get someone who can't play, make a list and vote-kick them if you get grouped with him/her again. There is no viable alternative for Blizz to use.
To inspect and sort out achievements in game instead of having to armory them or compare achievements (worst feature in the game) I use an addon called Examiner. You can look at specific sections of achievements, it calculates all their stats based on gear, spec and racials and displays them on the main screen and also keeps a cache of previously inspected players. Plus, you can use it to turn the portraits to see what they look like from behind ;)
@KendallwithaK gearscore is the best thing ever for pugging... it makes sense... if you have good gear youv cleared and understand something that made the raid leader think you deserved the loot

Offset is really the eye opener now. 5/5 T9 means nothing when for instance someones trinkets are green or tragic for their spec/role.
No way. I've been 80 for nearly a year now, have progressed through all but ToGC25, have been clearing ICC10 and ICC25, and my GS is just now BARELY 5400 based on the addon named GearScore. If he uses a different addon or site for his score, then make sure you know what it is so you can compare apples to apples. Bottom line, if everybody is not using the exact same source for GS, the numbers can't be compared.
Thats using gearscore, and you forget WoWs all about RNG if your not lucky on Drops/rolls/dkp/whatever system then your going to have a lower gearscore then someone with better luck.

Gearscore also sucks because it doesn't rate enchants/gems. You can have all 232-245 gear but no enchants/gems and you still have a 5200 gearscore..

imo gearscore needs to calculate gems and enchants too cause i'm sick of people in full t9 with bc gems and no enchants cause they're too cheap to buy epic gems or get them almost free through honor.

I agree. I have an Enhancement Shaman rated around 5150 with that addon. I peak 10k on Koralon ( falling back to 8.6k, would be higher if everyone else was doing more) I have been regected so many times for pug raids due to the mass adoption of this addon by the masses and thier weird logic. Now Offspec Job classes with the gear, they look fine on paper..but fail so hard because they really must have a more in depth understanding of what they are doing...Too many fail offspec peeps around.

There is method I use: its called "Look at their gear and spec."
If you have a melee dps with a spell power trinket or a healer using a strength ring, kick them the hell out.
Say your tank is not specced into basic tank talents like toughness... same deal.
No real way around it, forget the addon.

Thank Gods someone said it. My main is ICC geared BUT I never judge a player by their gear. I have pugged with players in low score gear who have done well and players who have worn high score gear who have been terrible. Players who rely on it too much - well your going to miss out on some good players.

Some one may have said this already but me and my Friend were messing around on the Internet as we usually do and we found a mod,(Well it was a script I think) that lets you modify your gear score, so be extra careful and just do a quick inspect to double check it. Also its really fun to run around with a 7k gear-score and freak people out.

That's exactly what I think about gearscore. An arcane mage may have like 5250 gearscore but might be stacking crit instead of haste, something that WILL affect the dps of that person so there is when you should use gearscore wisely instead of demanding a high GS on trade.

Lot's of people use it to gear up. They pass over gear they need so they can get gear to increase GS. So I end up with people in pvp gear and other lame stuff. The one thing you must do with gear score is turn on gearscore in chat. Once you have doen that you can click the gs number in chat and look at the gear the player has equiped no matter where you are in the game.

you can't accurately say you did tests proving one set was better than another. Boomkins are way too RNG based to really do testing with. Looking at the bonuses, it would appear 2t8 was better cause it said 15% crit on starfire, 15%damage to wrath eclipsed. well, under the eclipse, starfire pretty much always crits, so you are left with 15% wrath damage.
4t9 was 4%damage period. thats it, 4% damage no matter if you had eclipse, doesnt effect crit, and rng isnt gunna have negative/no effects

There was a group that went to Ulduar 10 ONLY IN BLUES, and they cleared the whole place. Just goes to show that gear is such a small part of performance.
Moonkins, up until 3.2 had to use 2pt8, even if they could have gotten 4pt9, but the tier 8 bonus was simply better. Ironicly then, a moonkin with 4pt9 back then would have a higher number, but would be worse geared than a moonkin using 2pt8.

I agree that the wrath and sf damage bonus was nice, but using the 4pc t9 just makes sense when the stats are better.
The bonuses for both sets are reasonably close in terms of wrath and sf bonus and the mf dot crits are so so. I think any boomkin still in 2pc t8 needs to review.

@DarKmaNiaN No. Back before 3.3, 2pt8 still had a better output. I did some tests, and found that 2pt8 was over 4pt9 by about 150 DPS consistantly, and that was on a dummy. The difference would be bigger in a raid.
But NOW, in 3.3, 4pt9 is obviously the best choice.

@Qieth oh right of course. They reworked exlipse too so that doesn't seem to function as friendly as it did before. The turn around procs seem to be nerfed somehow. Although its still possible.

@DarKmaNiaN I don't want to purposely advertise my moonkin blog, but if you google Qieth, you might see it. I talk about the eclipse changes there, in some post.
The short version is that you can't proc eclipse before 15 seconds after the previous one procced. This means you cant cancel eclipse just as you cast to proc solar eclipse, but it can happen once in a while if you are lucky to land a starfire JUST as lunar eclipse runs out.

i uninstalled GS when i saw the following happen:
balance druid in his 5000gs healing set got a raid spot because of that # alone. no one inspected, so he secured a spot, switched to his worse boomkin set. he stayed for the raid. ive also seen people with killer pvp sets but poorer pve sets do the same.
THANK YOU for pointing out this addon is no replacement for armory and inspect. the addon is fine, but the masses dont use it intelligently. abuse of the addon makes it a problem.

There is an increadably easy way to tell if someone knows how to play. Loot at their hit rating. If they don't have their hit capped, they don't know how to play.

There are only a few classes in their protection spec that wont really be aiming to cap their hit rating. tbh only noobs dont cap their hit. Its easy to see what youre implying

Gear score just shows what gear that person has it doesn't show how skilled they are a person with greens and blues can do better than a person with 5kgs

From what I've seen with GS, having higher than 5k usually means the person has done more than heroics to get there gear and usually means they should be decent.
Although one issue I have in random heroics is that pvp gear can have a pretty good rating. Which obviously if anyone's trying to do pve in pvp gear they have no clue what they're doing and will most likely fail pretty hard

Nice spiel on GS. It really needed to come from someone that a lot of folks trust so ty for outting GS for what it is. I'm not saying its shyt either, only that it should be used in the right context. Coupling GS with Recount or similar is not a bad start to monitor a pug, but Gear doesn't = Skill EVER.

@01patel ToC25 (NOT heroic) with a couple pieces from IC10 has my GS at over 6200 with the GearScore addon. Different addons give different numbers, and the only ones that matter for comparison to the topic of the video is the addon he's ACTUALLY TALKING ABOUT!

Gearscore is the ONLY real way to ensure that a person at least has the minimum GEAR to handle a given instance or raid. It does NOTHING to indicate the ability of the player. I've seen players who absolutely suck get carried along and end up very well geared simply because the guild didn't have enough viable players to bench the scrub. If you get someone who can't play, make a list and vote-kick them if you get grouped with him/her again. There is no viable alternative for Blizz to use.

To inspect and sort out achievements in game instead of having to armory them or compare achievements (worst feature in the game) I use an addon called Examiner. You can look at specific sections of achievements, it calculates all their stats based on gear, spec and racials and displays them on the main screen and also keeps a cache of previously inspected players. Plus, you can use it to turn the portraits to see what they look like from behind ;)

@SoundsLikeAParty1 Thats funny cos I'm pretty sure a whole bunch of us 10/25 man raiding guilds just ran for weeks and months on content to get T9. A tier that is now available to anyone (including scrubs) so while we understand where youre coming from.. theres missing factors from your statement.
Offset is really the eye opener now. 5/5 T9 means nothing when for instance someones trinkets are green or tragic for their spec/role.
ICC rep rings = lolcake also.

No way. I've been 80 for nearly a year now, have progressed through all but ToGC25, have been clearing ICC10 and ICC25, and my GS is just now BARELY 5400 based on the addon named GearScore. If he uses a different addon or site for his score, then make sure you know what it is so you can compare apples to apples. Bottom line, if everybody is not using the exact same source for GS, the numbers can't be compared.

Thats using gearscore, and you forget WoWs all about RNG if your not lucky on Drops/rolls/dkp/whatever system then your going to have a lower gearscore then someone with better luck.
