Nice job! Are you playing the solo w/ all rhythm pickup? I always thought that amazing tone Blackmore got was from the rhythm pickup. Love this solo, it's one of the most tastefully done guitar solos ever!
P.S. My cat's name is "Richard Blackmore" (He's all black)!
After watching it again - it looks like Blackmore picks the low sting with the pick and plucks the high string with his finger. Unique style. He does the same thing in the '73 live video.
@RCbeastly Somewhere I read that he fingerpicked classical style for the recording and upstroked a pick for '73 Live. Awesome solo. A real classic. Such great phrasing and tone. And very well played bijitbora.
after listening to millions of performances of this riff I go back to the original Ritchie's record and wonder how amazingly aggressive he plays it with his right hand using fingers but not a pick
It's nice to know, there are some (very few) people still, who think b4 they comment. Like you, my friend. It's not a game against Blackmore, it's "trying to appreciate his mastery in a small way by trying to pick it up myself". Helps me understand the psychology of the composer. Amazing solo .. seriously. Should not jam over it. Won't do justice to the legend. Awesome composition and damn tough to play ditto
@iaminlovewithdeath Good! We used to cover this thing and I loved live records a lot, we followed DP in raising tempo then I saw Blackmore picking two strings and it was a challenge for me so I did the same! then I found out he started to add a bass G note between the main riff fifths and again I copied it. But some time passed and the simplicity, powerful fingerpicking and angry slowliness of the studio version amazed me more than RB's fastest solo. Do not loose tastiness when develop skills
The '70s big Strat headstock is the way to go. All Ritchie Blackmore guitars have it, as well as (obviously) Yngwie's and Jimi Hendrix'.
In fact, Blackmore and Malmsteen Strat signature series (Ritchie's new for 2009!) both feature the large '70-style headstock. That's how a Strat should look like to me, even if it's a Squier, big deal.
if you judge someone by the kind of guitar they have then you're a fool. maybe that's why some kids think all they have to do is pose and hold an expensive guitar to fool everyone into thinking they're musicians.

Damn you did this solo justice! I really like Ritchie Blackmore, my favourite solo of his has got to be Child in Time.

It's true that Blackmore played the original riff with his fingers, but if you watch the California Jam video, he uses a pick with upstrokes.

good job. Ignore these wankers here who want you to do gay guitar posing. Blackmore wasnt the type to do it either.

it's a picked riff, but not a bad job...
you got to feel the music in your bones... and this looks like you feel nothing

nice. Is there a reason why you don't pick the riff, like Ritchie?
whooots 2 years ago
At that time Ritchie had no effects at all! He just playd very, very loud. The combination of Stat, Marshall stacks and the loudness is perfect.
