  • Back when they made em good. Right on!

  • Gah, the sound that Detroits make :D

I wish they still made them like they do...

  • how much the engine wt.?

  • rock on! givin' me ideas...

    transmission?

  • damn that's sweet. Wish I had gone that route with my 94 K1500 when the gas 350 went at 225K miles instead of putting a remanufactured 350.

  • Had to put the GM in the old ford to make it run right.

  • that looks like it would be a sick truck!

  • Shoehorning a 671 would have been a bitch!

  • I used to build these for the navy! Tough engines but only 80hp blown!

  • 161 hp blown with a turbo and n 70 injectors still gets 28 mpg around town and 34 on the highway

  • @rangerblue87 Yea, you cant wrong with detriot! They're like an erector set if u stay in the series!

  • @rangerblue87 wow, that is sooo cool. I love unique engine swaps done right. I could only ever manage 9 mpg in my 67 highboy. Ran great but definitely envious of your mpg!!! really cool!

  • @rangerblue87 The same specs as an early 6bt cummins only this engine was built much earlier, and gets about twice the mpg. Both weigh about the same, the epa can suck every bit of my dick because 2 cycle detroits ruled.

  • Damn thing will NOT fit into my Toyota! :-(

  • What kinda mpg does this thing get?

  • 28 in the city and 34 hyw

  • seriously?

  • 353!! The coolest sounding diesel on the planet!!!

One day I hope to do a similar project.

  • I've got one of these 353's, minus the turbo, on an old loader and while testing the hydraulics got air in the fuel lines and was wondering if you guys had any tricks to get the thing primed again...

  • What I do: GO to NAPA, buy a boat "primer bulb" and buy about 5-10 feet of fuel line, really cheap total should be like 12 bucks. Anyways, I have a diesel fuel can, I force fresh diesel fuel into the lines. Try that. When you start up, make sure you give it throttle to help get some air out. You may have to crack an injector or fuel line depending on how bad it is.

  • Don't worry about priming the system detroits have unit injectors that act like their own fuel pumps just keep cranking the motor and she'll start up eventually.

  • The Detroit fuel rail is Self-Priming, so just crank the hell out of it and she'll start.

  • TOTALLY AWESOME! this is a re-power I would love to do some day. a lot of classic trucks or jeeps would be so great with a 3 or 4 cylinder 2-stroke detroit diesel in them.

  • I knew Captain Hook drove a Detroit!!!

  • How much does the engine weigh?

  • Anyone that knows anything about detroit knows that it has to have the supercharger to run because it's two stroke. The turbo is there for boost. I just hope you guys had water circulating through the engine while it was running.

  • call it a blower. Supercharger is the wrong term and misleading. You are exactly right otherwise.

  • That old biker dude has a claw for a hand....cool.

  • this is a dodge pickup

  • nope a 1970 FORD 4X4 F 250 CREWCAB

  • yeah um whatall did u have to do to put that detroit in the ford? and how much did it cost

  • @rangerblue87 why the hell would u put a gm engine in a ford?

  • @neurocytohemotoxic Because thats the best way to power a Ford.

  • hell yeah turbo and a blower.. Amorican Muscle!

  • Just turbo, actually

  • I can see a blower on the side of that engine right above the starter. The turbo is blowing into the inlet.

  • Ah, I see now. I've never seen a supercharger that looks like that, however I have no explanation for what else it could be, so good eye!

  • when an engine like this has only the blower (without a turbo), it is still considered 'naturally asipirated,' because it would simply not run at all without the forced air. The engine has no intake valves.

  • At least I am not the only one who has to explain that when the blower is installed on a detroit, it's a BLOWER and doesn't create BOOST. When BDS or some other company takes a Detroit blower and modifies it to be used on a GAS engine, then it is a Supercharger. The blower on a detroit is there to allow it to run and is not a power adder. People need to do a little research and learn and re-cage their thinking to understand what is going on. Now the turbo on that engine IS a power adder.

  • VERY nice!! Sounds almost EXACTLY like a 6V-53T.

  • This will be a nice (slow!) economical truck to drive when it's together. Just don't try and run the quarter mile like 'hotel cambodia' did! Just kidding, hc. Your Chevy effin' rules!

  • This is a Ford F-250. Not a Chevy K20 Pickup.

  • Except MotelCambodia's truck is a 3-53, this is a 3-53T, note the snail up top. ;)

  • Dang! It is snail equipped!

  • I sent you a note in your youtube in box about getting a flywheel.I got mine at this junk yard 11 years ago. I put a 453T with a 5 and 3 speed in a Chevy crewcab. All they had was double disk and I had it turned down to a single disk and balanced. I found their address: Dale's Truck Parts 2891 US Route 42 East

Cedarville,Oh. 45314-9443.They also sell stuff on eBay. If you have google earth and plug in their address you'll see the junk yard just west off where the pointer goes to.

  • Thanks, you helped me out alot man!

  • awesome! I ran an old Mountain Logger skidder with a 353 for a long time. thats a great engine. I have wanted to put one in my old GMC for a while. any suggestions and words of wisdom?

  • I work for detroit diesel and I've only seen these in tug boats used as generators.

    Awesome engines...

    Nice job sounds great.

  • Thanks still looking for a automotive flywheel for it to make it move

  • Have you got her on the road yet?

  • no waiting for a flywheel ,so we are re doing all the brake lines put a tilt nose frontend one it and just a bunch of cool things to it while we wait thats the hard part waiting

  • I like this sound

  • You mention 28mpg city, 36mpg highway. How do you figure your #'s?

  • thats what it got with the 353 in it years ago

  • That truck is boss, i've seen it on the detroit diesel forum on yahoo, nice set up! i'm lookin today the same set up as that but in a early 80's f250. First things first is i need to find and engine and tranny and then a truck that has no drive train. what kind of tranny are you using? 4spd gamma goat? or you converting it to something else?

  • Ford 4 speed till we can find a heavy 5 speed for it

  • Marvelous

  • There were a lot of Ford-chassis step-vans back in the '70's that had FACTORY-INSTALLED 3-53's and 4-53's. Wonder Bread used a lot of them. I don't see why this engine wouldn't work in a Ford. Please take some more video when the truck's finished. I like 2-cycle Detroits but especially 3-53's and 6V-53's.

  • Oh I see you answered that, nevermind.

  • What kind of tranny do you have behind that engine?

  • thanks for sharing, rangerblue. that's going to be a sweet truck when it's done. I hope you hit your MPG goal!

  • Very nice to see a GM diesel in an old Ford body, but wouldn't that 3-53 be a little underpowered for a rig of that size?

  • nope it will have enough power not in a hurry for 26+ MPG

  • Fair enough. To your knowledge would a 4-53 easily fit in a similar truck with an NV4500 or similar transmission?

  • Cool truck too bad its a ford LOL.

  • thanks just love this engine seen all of yours damn cool rig you have sir

  • Excellent.

Be carefull when turning engine off after revving, allow turbo to slow down, otherwise if the engine stops so does the oil pressure, with turbo spinning fast, the oil pressure has stopped and this can damage turbo bearings. Biggest killer of turbos!!

    U probably know this.

  • Nice work man! This is a bad ass truck and I cant wait to see another video of it when she's done! Thanks

  • yes yes yes its a free wheelin ford truck

  • nice man would love to see some more of it when its done or just whenever..preferably under a load! you thinking about puttin jakes on it?

  • nice, i want to do a project like this but i cant find a single thing about how to mount up a 4 or 5 spd. what kind of tranny are you running

  • A 4 sp a 353 gama goat engine mounts a 4sp you need an automotive bell housing they are not to hard to find.

  • I have a gama goat moter in a 69 chev 3/4 ton . A chev 4 speed bolts rite up to the gama goat bell housing .I put it in 1982

  • @jakesbags did u have to put diesel springs under it?

  • what year ford is that in??? lookin to a similar project myself!!!

  • it is a 1970 Ford F-250 high boy crew cab. it used to be an alaskan pipe line service turck. my dad bought in 1979 with no rear end and no engine. he has had several engines in it since but now we are putting a 353 detroit diesel in it. the 353 was the original motor that came with the truck. there are ford truck clubs and detroit clubs on yahoo. ps. it will get about 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.
