  • also he's playing a lot of hammer ons

  • he most likely had tech diffuculties during the performance, but the SNL guys filled it in during editing

  • Heheh, ironically one of the best televised rock performances ever. Plenty of people use backing tracks, but this band just ain't one of them.

  • why is so hard to find this song

  • the audio must have been edited by the engineer for the airing of course they want it perfect right ? engineer must have patched a part of the bassline from the other part to that part. if he is not playing that time why would he bother fixing the cable and the volume?

  • Well, there's no doubt Dave is playing his part.

  • @acsdata i agree to that

  • okey, I play guitar, and i've played the bass sometimes and I have to say that you can pull the strings with you're left hand without picking the string. and you can play open strings that is what he does.

  • Comment removed

  • If he's checking his cable i'm assuming he's cutting out, which you don't hear in the performance. So i think maybe since he was having technical difficulties they probably redubbed his part in post production.

  • No shame on him. As said, it's post production thing.... after those years and the way Jeff has contributed to Pearl Jam in the creative fields and with so many live performances at his back... no one can bring Jeff Ament down. He's an excellent musician.

  • "Mother Love Bone funky-fresh-style-over-substance mode."

Stardog Champion> any Pearl Jam song ever. In fact, Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns, Shangri-La, Stardog Champion> any Pearl Jam song ever.

Pearl Jam is Mother Love Bone watered down.

  • who gives a fuck jeff ament is fucking awesome!!!

  • who cares?

  • It's not a hammer on idiots! It's a re-release with technical flub fixed in POST production..IT'S OBVIOUS.

  • hammer on, and watch the slide up afterward

  • Hammer on, again HAMMER ON,

  • So he stops playing with his right hand, manages to play an open A, takes his left hand off the bass and somehow plays a B then manages to playing a play some single notes in a barred D chorded kinda shape without really moving his left hand that much at all.

Somethings not right here, you cant do that shit without moving your hands a bit more then he does and actually using your right hand a littttle bit more. Plus youd have to be a liiiiiiiiiiittle retarded to think that hammers sound likethat

  • @SobNoisseMovies: Do you play bass (or any other stringed instrument)? He played this fill using only his left hand. "Hammer on/Pull off"...google it.

  • HAMMERED FUCKIN ON!!! JESUS!!!

  • You can definitely hammer on with your left hand - especially if the note is an open string... I'm not buying it... everything else in the video is perfectly lined up... including jeff - i think this is speculation at best

  • CRAP IS HAMERED ON

  • DAVE IS THE MAN ON DRUMS

  • It's a hammer-on.

    Enough said.

  • he played an open A string with his left hand, while fixing the strap with his right. you only need one hand for that. solved.

  • Simple..it was fixed in post..this can't be the originally aired version.

  • Maybe they played totally live, but the original CD sound was mixed on the TV show (accoddingly this incident).

  • eddie is definetly singing live and dave is obviously playing the drums!! what else do you want???

  • for me this looks like a TV performance. And most TV performances are not played live!

  • you douche bag have you ever played through a compressor? you can play with the sensitivity. so that you can play with one hand if you want. or even a noise gate if you know how to use it. you probably don't even play bass . stick to nirvana!

  • @6690698 The greatest answer to anyone ever questioning one's abilities to play an instrument. Stick to Nirvana. :D Thanks man, loved your post!

  • @JendaHrbac right on man!!

  • LOL Thats really not that difficult. A lot of musicians do this. Basically, you just press the string a little harder against the fret so that it vibrates enough to play the note.

  • Also the show is definitely live, I remember reading an interview with mike and stone, mike saying how nervous he was about playing- if you watch the live solo for alive SNL 92 it's a different solo from the studio version, and he's playing the right frets for these new licks- it'd be ridiculous obvious if he was trying to mime a previously recorded improvisioned solo...

  • hmm, either they dropped the bass riff in after the show for an edit for the vhs or more likely I think:

the bass riff is C on the A string and G on the E string, thats:

    A-3-3--

    E--3-3-

At this volume you could easily "hammer on from nowhere" (the technique is called)

You just hit these frets with your first finger, and you'd be able to hear it clearly and get good note definition (as you can hear), he doesn't have to change hand postion!!! Vertical not horizontal movement. Mystery solved?

  • Who cares? o.O

  • vedade

  • I love it! AWESOME! I wish I could sing like u. I did some Pearl Jam Karaoke, I'm placing em on youtube for my Fam/Friends I have CHF and incase it cuts my life short, Vids/Music is 4ever. If you check it out keep in min I'm no singer. lol

  • Doesn't surprise me. Pearl jam used to do cool shit like play good heavy music and rage against ticketmaster. Now they do commercials for Target. Fuck them.

  • @SobNoisseMovies How dare you educate the screaming little bitches commenting here? Anyway, now you know it's very threatening to them when you dare to display such keen awareness of your surroundings. And I can tell right off, you're only a fake fan of theirs. Know why? Because a true pearl Jam fan would never have the neurological capacity to notice what you just pointed out. Word of advice? Shut your brain down and try to fit in. They'll love you for it.

  • he is right... pj never plays live, they have got the hole concert prepared, with all the talking and shit, thats why ed has long hair, so he can hide his face when he forgets his lines;)

  • @pjpjpjpjpj Thats total bullshit, you clearly no nothing about the band.

  • Wow! my life has changed...

  • SobNoisseMovies must be a jealous and bitter Creed fan.

  • It was fixed in post production in syndication airings. When it was live on the East Coast, there was a drop when he stopped playing to fix his strap.

  • I dunnu who uploaded this but obviously it is not the right audio for the video... if you look at Dave's drumming that doesn't match either... is he Dave Vanilli, too? Faggot

  • jeff can do what he wants ass!

  • maybe you're right but, who cares?

  • theyre one of the best LIVE bands ever.....gonna need alot more dirt than this to change my mind.

  • Yeah if he wasn't playing how would he know his bass went out and he needs to check his cable? Early it was edited/fixed or this is the wrong audio.

  • Obviously adjusting for a technical glitch, you muppet. And Nickypee, why if someone has 'got into the moment' must they be on drugs? Does this song not make you feel a bit lairy when you've cranked the volume up to 11? : ) Anyway, love and hugs all round.

  • At the VERY end look eddies lips don't match with the audio FAKE VIDEO IS FAKE

  • this audio does not go with that performance..

  • yeah whatever this was a long time ago

  • one thing is odd.. how come at 0:52 eddy changes the tune but his mouth does not... i don't think thisis the audio to the video

  • fuck u pearl jam isnt ashley simpson, go fuck of SobNoisseMovies u dont know shit

  • Ament looks like he's on some major drugs in this one!! Pretty funny!

  • that definatly wasnt a backing track, he was playig open notes then he just used his hand on the frets to pluck them without hitting the strings, its skills. i do that too.

  • i play bass and i can play plenty of shit with one hand just on the frets without hitting the strings...

  • Only one explination. This must be some later release..a dvd or something. HIS BASS CUT OUT AND THEY FIXED IT IN POST. I'm a bass player and an engineer. Why do you think he stopped playing in the the first place and CHECKED HIS VOLUME KNOB AND CABLE? Come on people, think.

  • i damn whomever posted this to hell. fuckyou

  • not a valid issue - looks like the fill was not a biggie, a sustained note and hammer ons that looked proper to what Jeff was doing... take this off.

  • i didn't know pearl jam played porch on saturday night live.

  • Im with ya there.... Id love to see this! Plus you have to understand the mix your hearing.. On a TV! A real player understands whats going on here!

  • ure ryt its on tv... must not be the original mix

  • Dude its the best SNL performance that I've ever seen

  • It's a backtrack man. you don't know what it is?

    then SHAME ON YOU!

    not for jeff,,,

    SIR!

  • the guy who posted this is a shit stirer and obviously wrong. he is most likely hammering on with his left hand. its really easy to do and still get to sound good, especially at that volume

  • Yeah, I suppose Dave the drummer isn't really playing either. Doesn't look like it. Maybe that bass sounding riff is actually coming from the guitar. A guitar can play some pretty low notes? no?

  • Comment removed

  • Not to start any flaming wars or anything, but I strongly recommend that for your own sake you take your info off of such a public web page. Also while I don't doubt Jeff is a good guy, unless you know him personally there's no way to know for sure any of what you said is true.

  • I don't see what the problem is. Unlike Millie Vanillie, Pearl Jam can obviously play live and if Jeff wasn't hammering on with his left hand and they had a backing track for the benefit of a live TV show (where sound levels I'm sure have to be capped at times), then so what? Either you like the song or not.

  • it's called a backing track. Live Tv doesn't allow for technical difficulties. did you watch the inauguration with yo-yo ma? that was a tape. it should be your next video.

  • fail

  • Bass players learn over time, that when there is something that happens like that, you have to hammer on with your left hand (or right for left handed players) the show..must go on.

  • weak. very, very weak.

  • haha,. nice try,. as we all know,. vanili has nothing,. but its proven over the years,. or almost 2 decades now,. ament dont need to be filled in,. look it up on some of their early pink pop vid,. jeff was playing the bass and all but the cable was accidentally unplugged,.

no fill ins in their man,. until he noticed it,. but this one is on tv,. maybe it was pre recorded in some ways,. so we didnt know if they made some technical adjustments,.

  • ps: you cant say that to a band that is one of the best if not the greatest live performers ever,. EVER

  • i can't hear the bass in that part dude

  • Left hand hammer on/ pull offs.

  • THIS

  • Not that it matters but I have this on videotape from waaay back and when you watch it you can clearly tell that the bass drops out because Jeff unplugged his bass while jumping around the stage. Post the whole video and you even see him share a little smile with Dave the drummer as if to say, holy shit that just happened on national TV

  • Pearl Jam has 2 guitars, and the second one is doing the part above bass, so it looks like the bass is going. The bass is hided behind the guitar, it happens all the time on various songs, from various bands! He stopped playing and that's all. Why would the band hire an other player to play on backstage? I doesn't make any sense.

  • by the way, stone's guitar is following the bass. That's the trick.

  • well it's cleaaarly a bass at that part.

  • me vale....PJ rules !

  • who cares this was like 17 years ago

  • Wow, don't pretend to sound high and mighty if you don't have a clue. I have played bass for 14 years, and can play the exact part Jeff plays there withOUT my right hand plucking the string. It's not hard. I suggest you watch Erik Mongrains video called airtap so you can see that you don't have to pluck the string to get it to sound.

  • Perfect comment - only another guitar or bass player would know, and whoever posted this vid is only looking to stir shit. Also, if you watch closely, he adjusts the cable but also smacks the body of the bass with the base of his palm, which at that volume also causes enough vibration to keep the bass going; any good player of any instrument has planned for technical difficulties during live shows. Thanks for the great comment from a player's perspective.

  • Jeff wrote the music to Nothingman. He can do whatever the fuck he wants.

  • @WhamBang You're right. This obviously includes dubbing his bass part.

  • @SobNoisseMovies c'mon man... don't know that the majority of music videos, including "live" for TV times are recorded with the music already recorded? for technical purposes is nothing .. I even have had a direct affect first the bass part and then do a playback ...

Bassist Jeff Ament is a great ... I had the pleasure of seeing him live in Venice in 2011 and it was amazing ... do not throw shit on one of the few serious practitioners left please ...

  • @WhamBang hahah, agree absolutely))))

  • Since i was there i will let you all in on what happened. During the live taping jeffs bass was cuting out, make some noise. Thats why hes playing with his cable. So Im guessing when they aired it(since its not really live) they edited the sound from a rehearsal take. So that way their performance wasnt messed up by the bass cutting out

  • Wasn't this a splicing together of two performances?Mystery solved.

  • open tuning ring a bell....fuck sakes...he could be playing with his fret hand...

  • lol exactly

  • SobNoisseMovies urgggg, just shut up and dont come back no more you fool!i wonder the ridiculous envious you are!and you know what..i dont give a shit, mother fucker

  • i hate u so much get a fucking life u dickhead this is the greatest band in the world

  • you are so stupid. go do something worthwhile with your life

jeff ament is one of the worlds best bassists

    go see them live.

    period.

or shut the fuck up and delete this video because youre just insulting a musician and the fans of this band

  • ok the secret is out!!!! PJ music and vopcals is actually coming from a midget band behind the stage!!! what a dumb-ass!!! whoever posted this vid and comments needs to be banned from you-tube 4 life!!!! PEARL JAM the best band in the UNIVERSE!!!! EDDIE VEDDER best voice ive EVER HEARD PERIOD!!!!!!!!!! one of the few people on earth that sounds the same no-matter here he is singing stage studio radio backyard mic or no mic its all the same no-machines no dubs no tricks only god given talent

  • I just wanted to see porch performed on snl . I dont care about your observation . Way too much time on your hands.

  • your a fuckass, SobNoisseMovies

  • looks like he just pulled the cable out when he jumped... then was plugging it back in.

btw: if you ever seen them live... you would know who FUCKIN' JAMS!

  • Hey, you dont see the coments on your posts?

Or you dont have balls to admit that you dont understand nothing about music?

"Ament Vanili"? Fuckin idiot, you cant do this type of accusation without cause.

Now, remove de video or change the title and the information. Shirleydyer are obvious right.

  • You're a moron

  • And why am i a moron?! Can you tell me?! I'm not right?! I dont talk to you, and if you talk to me, you have to take a cause, dont insult without justify! mf

  • Obviously the IDIOT that posted this vid knows NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC AND PLAYING LIVE ON STAGE FUCKING MORON>

  • so then why dont you prove him wrong instead of just saying he is...?

  • 1-dont care ,they still rock,2 where can i find this complete song (as well as alive) i been looking for this snl video, i had both songs but they were "removed" ....

  • i don't blame them for synching. snl is piece of shit show anyway...

  • ignorant you cant even hear the bass, morron, go get a life

  • you can hear it perfectly.....

  • clear as a bell.......

  • vanilli??? oooh shit lmao, a little slow on my part

  • Alright. The obvious explanation is that they were playing on a television show and soemtimes on television shows they don't have time to run the suond properly so they run pre-recorded tracks in the background. Its just an easier way to do a tv appearance where its only one song and there's not enough time for a proper sound set-up.

  • whoever upped this is a douchebag

  • who cares if thats even true bro. jeff ament is a great bassist and even if its true, he still kicked ass enough to get where he fuckin is. lets see you do it you damn critic

  • I agree with everyone who says who cares. But, for the tards who can't distinguish the bass fill from the guitars.... you are idiots

  • you morron, the bass cant be even heard, who cares, jeff's moves compensate it, nobody rocks like pearl jam

  • I still love you Jeff. You can do no wrong in my eyes.

  • yo, your an asshole, who gives a shit, they still fucking rock!!! you could of easily just synched up the audio from another performance

  • who tf cares. Eddie is smokin' !

  • Jeff is a great bassist and this was what we call "covered by the band" meaning the sound was loud and intense enough where if he needs to adjust something, it won't be noticed unless you have no life and point stupid shit like this out

  • ...he can easily be covered by his guitarists playing on - it's called looking looking after each other on stage geek breath...

  • what an absolute bullshit assessment from some star gazing wannabe....I play bass and what ament does is perfectly normal and is easilty possible by hitting an open string and letting it ring you dick...

  • regardless,

this is the sickest live version of this song ever! Show me a better one. The whole song needs to be on here.

  • what a surprise... another ignorant yanki...

  • Here's the deal... was this the ORIGINAL LIVE version, or was this recorded AFTER. I'm betting you saved this AFTER. Well, they could have patched the sound up for replays of this episode. I DOUBT you recorded this the night it was played live. So, again it was probably filled in after the show - remember they do a full dress rehearsal, with audience, hours before the live show, so they easily could have patched in the bass line over the 2 second glitch on the bass.

  • He is playing anywaysm if you look at his left hand you'll se he is still pressing the strings, you can press each string hard and you'll get sound anyways....... fuck you man, jeff is the greatest

  • sure he's pressing strings.. but not in the right sequence and notation his riff is moving in. his hand would've moved up the neck, but it didn't..

    you're a dipshit Vosfi..end of story.

  • Umm, if Jeff had 1 finger, then you would have a point. But seeing as how he has all of his digits, then it's very easy to play that part without shifting to another position. Know your stuff before you call someone a dipshit, or else you're the one who looks like the dip.

  • Wow! I couldn't spot the roadie filling in for him when I saw him kick ass on the bass this summer!

To the original poster: What's your point?

  • so what? what s the big deal here? he still co wrote a lot of stuff lyrically/musically and can play fretless like the very selected few. He's the king.

  • u cood here the bass jeff ament is awesome

  • I was playing the bass...with my butt.

  • I know for DVD and T.V performances a person from the band can replay a certain section where he messed up. its called an overdub, maybe they did that.... I have seen PJ 15 times and Jeff is amazing everytime so i dont care what he did this taping.

  • lucky!

  • Think the knothead who posted this would at least have enough self respect to take it down by now...but then, if he had any to begin with, he wouldn't have posted it to begin with!

  • I agree...Take IT Down!

I have met Jeff on several occasions and seen Pearl Jam perform at least half a dozen times. I have also seen Jeff perform with his other bands Three Fish and Deranged Diction in small venues with regular sound systems.

I have found Jeff to be a sincere and hard working musician. His performances are always SOLID and REAL."

  • wrong wrong,he goes to right stack hears fuck all, runs to other side, same,a track gets cut into the mix,he gets back in place, tries to get sound, fuck it,its all about eddie anyway.

    done.

  • Do you have anymore from the SNL show?

  • Asinine. Obviously he's playing.

  • This is from Saturday Night Live... a show broadcast live on the east-coast of the USA. Afterwards the taping is broadcast over the remaining USA. After the show ends, the SNL editors clean-up the recording (audio and video) for broadcast of the recorded show.

The SNL rehearses are always recorded so I guess this Youtube video is the "cleaned-up" rebroadcast. it's very easy to splice in a patch of base track audio (from the rehearsal recording).

I can find no logical "Vanilli" scenario.

  • I suppose Dave is playing artificial drums and Ed is lyp synchning, Dude, PJ would never do what you're thinking?

  • BONE HEAD,,,, he is tapping the fret board

  • BONE HEAD,,, he is tapping the fret board,,, i guess the editor of this utube video is not a guitarist or bassist...

  • the editor is an idiot

  • anyone who says he's "fake playing" is a complete idiot

  • jeff rocks

  • does anyone know where i can download this whole thing? i mean the rehearsals from snl in 1992. thank!

  • well also he was playing with the frets...too...look at his hand....

  • he i got an idea lets all go watch pearl jam performances and study wat jeff does in each concert so we can hate on him some more!!! : ) Jesus guys get a life!!! Jeff AMENT IS AWESOME!!!

  • And because of this one incident he is a terrible bass player and anything hes ever done was fake... whatever. Fuck off.

  • i had the full video response for this, but now its unavailable

    argh

  • Bullshit. I didn't hear a bass fill there at all. I should know. I have been playing professionally since the age of 16.

He is hitting an open string to finish out the line and you can clearly hear the bass lose volume right before the "fill" which is a one note pedal and the reason he messes with his jack.

  • This riff is a Gmin run. His progression is G, A, Bb, C. When he takes his position hand off of the bass that is when he is playing the open A. Case closed.

  • hang on a second sherlock.

when he is setting his strap, you clearly listen to a bass playing several open A with a higher fith (E) in between.

  • The Fifth in a Gmin is a D not an E. An E would sound completely horrible as the minor 7 is an F in this particular instance. There would be no reason for Jeff to create tension in the second note of the run. I clearly hear an open A in the line *ahem* sherlock.

  • This particular section of the song is Modal. Meaning the chords are as follows: Gmin7 (Aolean) Amin7b5 (Locrian), BbMaj (Ionian), Cmin7 (Dorian). The notes in a Gmin7 chord are as follows: G,Bb,D,F. There isn't an E anywhere in this chord and as a matter of fact there isn't an E note found in any of the chords that I mentioned or in their respective Modes.

  • You know your modes. Which doesnt mean Pearl Jam follow by them eheh.

I was wrong though, It is not open A he is playing. He is playing a C , thus the note I hear besides C is not an E, but an G.
